Can I tint Thompson's Water Seal with Minwax oil stain?

I am trying to match a dark stain on new, pressure-treated pine that will be installed as exterior trim. Thompson's Water Seal Semi-Transparent Stain makes a similar color but I think it will still need some tweaking. Can I tint it with a very small amount (1:4 or maybe even 1:8) of Minwax oil based liquid stain? I am hoping that since both the Thompsons and the Minwax are oil based, there won't be any issues.

The amount of wood that needs to be stained is very small and is semi-protected from the elements, so I'm more concerned with matching the color than I am with waterproofing properties.

Did you try it?

There are concentrated pigments for tinting varnishes and such, but I don't know if they would work for a sealant

I tried it and it wouldn't mix. The stain just sat on the surface of the Thompson's and even when mixed for a long time (basically shaken) the color was really ugly and muddy-looking. I ended up doing a coat of Thompson's and letting it dry, then painting a coat of Minxwax over it and wiping it off after a few seconds. It dried nicely and the color is spot on - so far, so good!

We did it and it worked fine. And we’re fixing to do it again soon.

Worked great mixing the two and also added a leftover wipe on darkener.

When I paint I add some kills for one coat. Covers great.
