Workout Clothes for the Middle Aged Woman

I am 49. Just shy of 5'4". Most of my adult life have been about 115 pounds. The last three years, due to lots of travel at work and a broken ankle last year (with 3 ankle surgeries), I have gained 15 pounds that I want to lose. I no longer have the job and my ankle is better, so I have lots of time and have joined a gym. I carry most of my weight in my middle... it truly is like a spare tire. I can't find work out shirts to save my life. Most shirts are too fitted. Even size large is too small around the waist, but then of course, way too large in the shoulders. The average cotton t-shirt might work, but isn't long enough to mostly cover my butt (when I wear workout leggings/capris) without looking like a tent. Does anyone here have this problem? If so, have you found brands of clothing that work for you? Thank you.

I don't have the exact problem, but recently tried on and purchased some workout clothes. Went with RL pants and Under Armor shirts. Also purchased one long sleeve, loose fitting shirt by Calvin Klein named "Asymetrical (something)." Belk is always having sales and coupon codes online/their website. Just looked online, and CK has several loose fitting tops from which to choose.

I am petite, so often hard to get things that aren't too long. I get most of my work out wear at Marshall's or TJMax. Just be prepared to look and try on everything because you will be surprised what will look good.

I am never lucky at The Nike Store and, actually bought Nike at Nordstrom's. While visiting in Pittsburgh years back there was a Brooks store. They had a wide assortment of long and short tops. Are you near one of those?

Certainly you have at least one or two tee shirts that you can get away with?

When I work out I love wearing skort capri leggings so I don't have to worry about covering my bottom.

Under Armour has quite a few shirts that they call loose fit. If the shirt is loose fit it will say it right on the tag. I have purchased some at Dick's.

Eileen Fisher has great skirted leggings. I don't work out in them (use them for unscheduled trips to grocery store, comfy outfit for hairdresser, etc) but it's an idea!

I would go with something like a long and loose tank top, like this one from Old Navy

Another idea that I have seen at the gym is putting gym shorts over the workout leggings. Then, you can wear a shorter top. Interestingly, I saw this look on a slender woman, so I think she liked the comfort of not looking tight on her back.

Along with Old Navy, Gap also has a section. Have you also look at Athleta?

Great ideas, thank you! I will check out these suggestions today. I appreciate the help!

Another fan of TJMaxx and Marshalls here. I have found several pieces of workout wear at both stores.

Errant, ON has a great selection but I am still mad at them for discontinuing their version of workout capris with a skirt. The product had hundreds of positive reviews. It makes no sense.

I may want to duck and cover after hitting the send button, but if you really can't find what you are looking for, you might look in the maternity section of the store. [I'm closing in on 130 pounds and am 4 inches shorter than you. My weight is more evenly distributed that yours, though.]

graywings, my family is long waisted and sometimes when we are desperate to find a top in a particular color or style we look in the Target maternity section. The maternity clothes available now are much more flattering than the things I wore 20 years ago.

Never thought of looking in maternity! Funny. Thanks for the idea. I've tried TJMaxx and Marshalls, and our stores just aren't carrying that many workout tops right now. I guess I should have shopped in the summer or maybe it's just hit and miss enough that I keep missing them. I'll definitely look at Old Navy, Target maternity and the other suggestions. Thanks.

I think both Kohl's and Belk's have decent athletic departments. Also, think outside the box - don't limit yourself to athletic clothes. It seems to me there are many longer, tunic like tees in the regular departments and those might suit your needs.

kswl, what shoes do you wear with your skirted leggings?

I was in a Target today and they carry Champion brand sports clothes. They had a slightly longer, fuller like an a-line, t-back tee (similar to the one shown above). I didn't stop to check the price, but I did think of you!
