Need Help With Entryway - Country French ?

Advice please! I am working on the entryway wall when you first come in the house….First I just had the mirror hanging up. It looked ok but it felt like it needed something more… so I experimented and added the vintage watercolor botanicals and the iron topper around the mirror. but now I am wondering if there is too much stuff and if I should have left it with just the mirror or a different shape mirror . Also I am wondering if I should paint the inside of the entry doors white. . I really suck at this stuff! Help!

I think just a mirror, but a taller rectangular one with a black frame. I would remove the pictures and the iron topper.

Don't paint the doors! They add charm. I think you have two much going on. I would remove the pictures and the scroll above the mirror.

I would add an area rug and maybe something on the floor, like an umbrella stand.

Agree, don't paint the doors - the inside of the cabinet maybe, but not those lovely doors. I also agree the wall looks too crowded, if you really want the botanicals hung with that mirror I'd move them farther away from the mirror and remove the the topper.

After removing the botanicals and the scroll, try the mirror turned vertically. (P.S., keep the cat.)

I think the pictures and mirror would look fine if there was a wider furniture piece under them. It doesn't look balanced to me.

Agree about not painting the doors. They look great!

Love the topper. Would remove botanicals. To me the topper adds charm. Pictures are too busy and not balanced. Lovely entry.

I love the water colors with your chest and I would try them alone without the mirror and iron piece.

Yeah - Oly's suggestion is good so I'll slightly revise mine. I would remove the mirror completely and just hang the botanicals there.

i think the mirror frame doesn't look right, it's tone doesn't feel right with the others things, replace with sth more simple and looking modern

I like having a mirror in the entryway so I can check my hair and such. I like your items, such pretty choices.

I would take away the scroll, turn the mirror and move the botanicals farther away from the mirror and possibly lower.

Add a 4x6' rug to your entry to give guests a place to "land" when they come in and to pull together the décor.

The prints should not extend beyond the width of the chest. Either use just the prints or just the mirror (hung vertically). See photo below of a Charles Faudree foyer:

    http://photos.hgtv.com/photo/foyer-with-antique-chest-of-drawers

Also, in my opinion, the lamp is more "country" than Country French. Also, the runner should not drape down the sides of the chest.

    My thoughts:

    1. I would take out the mirror and just hang the botanicals, they are quite charming.

    2. I would group the 2 candleholders together with the lamp, instead of all of the candles on each end of the chest.

    3. To give the cabinet some oomph, I would either put gathered fabric behind the glass doors, paint the back of the cabinet or cut some foam board to the size of the back of the cabinet and cover it with fabric or wall paper.

    4. Agree that a rug would be a wonderful finishing touch.

If you decide you like a mirror instead of the prints, I would do a round mirror.

Maybe something like this. Only without dismembering your sweet kitty the way I did. :-) (I think the mirror and pictures need to be dropped down a little lower than I pasted them.)

If it was my entry and those were the items I wanted: (sorry for the bad PS job-long day)

I would move the cabinet to the right enough the prints do not interfere with the light switches, I would rotate the mirror to vertical, keep the prints lower than the top of the mirror and then decide if there is room for the topper

or run the prints down one side of the cabinet

I'd remove everything and replace the mirror with a larger one with a black frame. I think every entry needs a mirror but the scale of yours is too small for the cabinet below.

And I love the suggestion of an umbrella stand or something similar! I don't care for that mirror in that spot, agree with most of the posters on that. Please don't paint those beautiful doors!

Thank you so much for your comments and suggestions. This is just the foyer... and I still have a whole house to get thru eventually. I unfortunately didn't get any design or artistic gene.

I would get rid of the lamp. Spread the botanical out--give the mirror some breathing room, give the inside of your cabinet a white wash and interest. We can't really see what you store/display there. I agree on the doors staying as is, a rug would be a finishing touch and an umbrella stand or something fitting.

Please be kind to yourself. You have lovely things here, and I can see in the mirror's reflection a peek into a beautiful home. The suggestions being made are minor tweaks of what is off to a good start. : )

Unless you really need a mirror here I think I would take it down and just hang those charming watercolors. A rug, an umbrella stand and perhaps a taller lamp. And NO, do NOT paint those lovely doors!

Laurie, your foyer is lovely. Remember, this is a design forum and most of the members are top notch at decorating (I'm not but most others are). Your ability is better than most people who don't come to a design forum. All you have to do is look at real estate listings to see horrible mish mashes.

I like a mirror in an entry for a last minute preening when greeting guests but if you don't really use the mirror I would agree to take it down and just use your lovely botanicals. Also turn your mirror to vertical and if you keep the mirror I would lower the prints. They are hanging a tad too high.

Charming foyer! Maybe just hang the pictures wider and lower to fill the wall space better?

I like the arrangement above, if you decide to keep everything, but add a rug by the doors.

Just saw this and haven't read all the comments in case I say the same thing. Love the chest especially nice in the entry. I would turn the mirror and push it to the left side even with the side of the chest, put a taller lamp to fill in on the right side and add a decorative bowl or container for keys, mail etc. It is a perfect place for a mirror to check hair and lipstick before leaving. I would not use the iron detail there and perhaps you could use one print on a stand on the chest. I agree with other suggestions of a rug and maybe something in the corner. Its a great looking chest and love the prints as well.

I'm not into scroll-y things at *all*, but now after seeing so many pics of it, I think I see why you like it, and that it's kind of interesting that it somewhat repeats the leaded glass scroll-work on the front door. But without other black, in either the mirror or chest below, it kinda hangs there like a doo-dad instead of a purposely placed design element. Can someone mock up the mirror in black?

I like awm03's suggestion - looks much better and a simple fix ! I would move the prints and leave everything else as it is. You have a lovely foyer, and I don't think it needs any drastic changes.

Take down the prints and the scroll and turn the mirror to a vertical orientation instead of horizontal. Remove the dresser scarf and put something bigger on the top than the small lamp and small picture frame---like a nice tray for mail, keys, etc.

Ditto kswl2. I would use the prints elsewhere.

Pretty foyer, decorations, and kitty! I would remove the pictures and flip and lower the mirror, or keep only the 4 prints above the cabinets. I'd also add a rug at the door. If you don't add a rug, I would go with my second suggestion of keeping the prints there to add more color.

Looking back at the original picture, it looks like there's not enough breathing room beside the prints and the mirror to use the arrangement as is. It's also already a little wider than the cabinet.

I think your mirror is too short. Botanicals should be mounted lower than mirror. Buffet lamps could be a nice touch provided they are tall enough.
