Frigidaire Professional Appliances vs. Kitchen Aid Appliances

We were ready to purchase KA appliances until we saw the Frigidaire Professional today. The refrigerator and oven has a much nicer look than the KA. Are the Frigidaire appliances as good as KA?

No. The "Professional" is a bit of an inside joke to the industry.

KA has pretty bad reviews, too.

I think the issue here is that the Frigidaire looks professional but it is not delivering professional level performance, but if you are looking at the KitchenAid, you really don't want that anyway. The Frigidaire ad says they are delivering "professional level design". If I were you I would scour the YouTube videos and try to see these items in action. I would also take the largest container you intend to store in the door of your refrigerator to the store and make sure it actually fits in the door of the refrigerator you are thinking of buying. So if you use gallon containers take an empty gallon container to the store and try it.

I thought KA was considered a well made appliance?

My kitchen had all Frigidaire Gallery Professional appliances. They were installed in 2000, by the house's previous owner.

The refrigerator died in 2012 (12 years life), I forget what the problem was but some fluid was pooling under the unit and the repairman said it couldn't be fixed (part not available). The range died this month (16 years) and it will cost $600 to fix the multiple problems, including circuit board, temperature sensors, and LCD display (but the burner that won't self-light cannot be fixed, part NLA). The dishwasher still works, but the door cladding has come off its frame a few times, the springs that lower the door have broken, the lower rack is missing half its wheels, so we'll replace it next year (17 years).

I'm not sure if 12-16 years is generally considered a good service life for modern appliances, but I don't think it is acceptable. I replaced the refrigerator with a commercial True T49. We just ordered a new range, an American Range ARROB636. Now I'm shopping for dishwashers. In general, I'm looking for the simplest models with as few electronics as possible.

John Liu - that actually sounds pretty standard, according to this and this.

In general it is better to buy best in class rather than all one maker for appliances. Frigidaire seems to get pretty good marks for its price point in induction ranges, for example. I'm happy with mine. But I would not buy a Frigidaire dishwasher.

I can say that I have seen the pros on here criticize the Frigidaire smudge less stainless steel finish, but mine has held up perfectly on both a range and a refrigerator, while my 800 series Bosch dishwasher has rust on the exterior stainless panel. It is just over three years old, had a tiny bit of rust, then got stored in the garage during our reno and came out with a lot of rust where the Frigidaire appliance stored in the same way has no rust at all. (And before the pros decide to blame me for the rust, I cleaned both the same--damp microfiber clothes and I do not have a cleaning crew.)

I suggest checking the appliances forum here for advice and I think people need more details--gas range, electric range, induction range; what kind of refrigerator; etc--to be able to give meaningful advice.
