Today....The Anniversary

Today marks the anniversary of what I feel is the event that changed my family's life (for the better).

I watched the Dr. David Perlmutter program on Grain Brain. When DH said, "I'm game.", I was shocked, but immediately sprang into action, cleaning out refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. Purged the house and our minds of all the grains and sugar.

In the past year we have:

-Lost well over 100 lbs as a family. Close to 60 for DH, 30 for me, and at least 25 for DS

-completely reversed DH's high blood sugar( probably DS's as well)

-eliminated DH's sleep apnea and snoring (DS's snoring)

-eliminated acid reflux at night, which caused me to hack in the morning, which caused a bit of stress incontinence.

-eliminated puffy, bloodshot morning eyes.

-eliminated afternoon blurry vision

-cured my eczema, a lifelong malady

-cured my nerve impingement symptoms (this was a combination of reducing inflammation from the grains, AND supplementing iodine)

-cured any symptoms of plantar fasciitis , heel pain, foot pain.

There are probably more, but here are a few "vain" things, that may signal improved health.....

-my eyes no longer itch constantly, and my long eyelashes have grown back in.

-my hair no longer breaks off close to the top on the back of my head

-I have fingernails for the first time in years

-I require no lotion to keep from looking scaly and feeling dry

-when I lost the weight with WW, by this weight, people were starting to tell me I was looking too thin. My boobs and belly button were sagging. Not this time.

-I can now comfortably drive at night. My light /dark recovery had gotten poor, and the lights had halos. No more.

What do we eat? Meat and vegetables. Lots of fat. It is so simple, and life -changing for us.

DH was not comfortable walking in from a parking lot, and now he is hiking with me. We are up to 7 miles, with elevation changes. We have NO joint pain.

DH was diagnosed quite a few years ago with degenerative disc disease, and would have quarterly flare ups that kept him in bed for a day or so. He now has NO back pain.

How wonderful for you all! DH & I have pretty much eliminated all white, wheat and rice flour from our diets. Eliminated all white and brown rice and most sugar as well. I hope our results at one year will be as successful as yours, Springroz. That is truly a huge success for you both and you have every reason to be proud as heck.

Good luck with that in the long term. You might want to watch the movie Forks Over Knives.

Y'know that's the problem....fat isn't good for your heart or your gallbladder, protein isn't good for your kidneys and carbs aren't good for your pancreas, but you have to eat something. I like Michael Pollen's summary of all basic nutritional advice:

    • eat real food
    • eat mostly plants
    • don't eat too much

I'm also finding that, especially as we learn more about the human biome, nutrition really needs to be individually prescribed...my GF is now striving for zero carbs as she's fighting high blood sugar. I just had to switch to zero fat for my gallbladder. DH has to eat low protein because of his poor kidney function. It's really all about what works best for you and makes you feel your best given where your body is at today.

That's excellent. What a testimony to how foods do impact our immune systems

Isnt it just animal fat that is not healthy for our heart? Other fats like avocado, nuts and olive oil are supposed to be good for you, although high in calories so you eat them in moderation.

No fruit? I am not judging, I am just curious. I mean, are you literally only eating meat and vegetables?

Roseabby it depends on which Dr's you believe I would say. there are many that say you need no added fat beyond a few nuts or seeds a day and you do not need any oil ever. Those would be Dr McDougall, Dr Furhman, Dr Esselstyn, etc. They primarily agree on a whole foods Plant based no salt, oil or sugar way of eating - WFPB no SOS. you can read about it on Dr Mcdougal's site including his whole plan, for free. he does have books too though. He is more starch based, Dr F is more veggie with nuts based.

I am glad you are feeling better SpringRoz.

The way people eat can be such a hot topic! :)

Having had a weight problem most of my life....I have a good amount of experience with different diets, which is why I could not understand why I could NOT lose the weight! For heaven's sake, I managed a fitness facility! It just made no sense.

I know when I get down to 900 to 950 calories a day (which is the Weight Watchers lower points range...what I am in when I get close to my goal weight), I have cut out enough fat that my hair starts to fall out. My skin starts to crack. My gums turn red. I have NONE of these symptoms now.

Sueb20, we eat a little fruit. Some berries, an occasional banana.

I believe that one diet does not fit everyone. Since diabetes runs in DH's family, controlling the carbohydrates so his blood sugar does not spike is important. Controlling my insulin is apparently the key to my being healthy.

So many people have so much trouble trying to stay a reasonable weight, keeping their blood sugar in check, keeping their cholesterol in check, taking multiple pills for side effects of other drugs, and so many other mystery illnesses and auto immune diseases that there MUST be a root cause....

Yea, cozy farmhouse! You are doing great!

I have tried to always read the negative articles about LCHF, but when the results from my family alone are so positive, it is hard to see the negative. Some of the symptom relief and results * I * would not have believed if they had not happened to me and my family.

How I missed the line about what they eat is beyond me. We'll maybe not, I've been out of it since before Thanksgiving. I went through a couple weeks of dream filled nights and have not recovered.

    With said, good night.

cozyfarm, I have been eating a high fat diet and got into gallbladder trouble. But again, it's all an individual thing...both parents and all 4 grandparents had their gallbladders out. Plus I have battled graves' disease for over 30 years including spells of hypothyroidism which some consider an aggravating factor for low motility in the gallbladder.

So as I said, it really is based on the individual and their genetic and medical makeup as well as their biome. As difficult as it may be, perhaps the JJ Virgin approach is a good one as it is an elmination diet...eliminate the foods that most commonly cause people issues and then add them back one at a time to see if that particular food bothers you.

I guess I should have specified that fat is good for a healthy gallbladder. If for some reason it isn't functioning properly then, naturally, eating something fatty could be an issue. (My attacks all followed a meal of basically no-fat lentil stew, so it's not just fatty foods that cause GB problems.)

For those of us with insulin resistance the LCHF approach is a Godsend. I'm not saying its ideal for everyone, just that its not unhealthy.

Thanks, Springroz! I'm three lbs away from my weight goal right now and ready to figure out my personal carb tolerance. My DH and our two YA DDs are also following the diet. They have all found it to be helpful too. Asthma gone, hypoglycemia gone, the list goes on...

It was a YouTube video someone posted here last spring that started my family down this path. I was hoping it would balance DHs blood sugar, it has, and so much more...

Was it the Sarah Hallberg video that I posted as evidence that I had not completely lost my mind??

I am so glad to read other good results! I try not to be cynical, but when the results are so black and white, and you look at the grocery store shelves (and how FEW you actually use for purchases), it hard to not conclude conspiracy.

Then, if you watch TV, or read magazines, and look at the drug advertisements, and think of the symptom relief that came from removing the CAUSE of the "disease" , instead of treating just the symptoms.....follow the money, that is all I have to say about that.

congratulations on being so close to your goal!! After being stable for a couple of months, last week I dropped 4 lbs, so I am only 8 lbs from my goal. I feel good where I am, though, so whenever it drops, that suits me.

Congratulations on your anniversary, Springroz! That's wonderful to read.

While I don't follow the Grain Brain diet specifically, I have found that a low-carb/high fat diet makes me feel and function much better than not. I have thyroid issues that impact other areas of my health and I've been unable to find a competent endocrinologist in my area because diabetes research and treatments are more lucrative (and easier to understand). My endo basically spends 5 minutes with me at my annual appt. checking my neck for a goiter, asking how I've been feeling (but not paying attention to my responses) and sending me for lab work so she can write me another prescription and send me on my way until next year. I've literally given up on her for any sort of guidance, other than the prescription, which I need.

I've been researching and experimenting with diet for years and know what works for me. I think when people think "low carb" they assume we're dining on bacon and NY strip every meal. I may have small amounts of red meat here and there, but my primary sources of fat are from avocados, coconut oil, nuts and seeds.

Whenever I eat grains or sugar and a few other trigger foods (like aspartame and nitrates), I feel it. There is a definite cause and effect. I'm spending this week focusing on my diet because I made some poor choices over Thanksgiving. (I'm weak when others cook for me...)

I think Annie's points about our dietary needs being individual is right on target. It's difficult and can be frustrating and very, very inconvenient, especially when I'm cooking for my family. But I look at it as a every bit as much as a prescription for my health, too.

Thanks for your post... you've inspired me to get back on track.

"Was it the Sarah Hallberg video that I posted as evidence that I had not completely lost my mind??"

Yes! That was the one! Thank you so much for posting it!!!

I honestly didn't expect the diet change to do much for me, I was mainly hoping it would help my DH and one of our DDs with blood sugar spikes/crashes. We were all pleasantly surprised by how rapidly our many ailments vanished, and how easy it was to shed excess pounds.

DS eats dinner (and sleeps) here, but other than that, he is on his own. After about 2 weeks of no grain dinners, he started feeling so much better that he gave the rest up on his own.

You have no idea how you made my day, cozy!

Speaking of which, in this week's NYT, could your healthy diet make me fat?
