What makes you think you got it from here?

This is the only place I went to online today. It happened a few weeks ago and this was the only place I went to that day.

Yes. My point is I believe THIS SITE is running malware or doesn't protect users from it. I could be wrong and I post this to see if others are also affected? Thanks.

No problems here. I use AVG's Total Internet Protection, if that helps.

The damn thing could have been lurking for weeks. It's almost impossible to know for sure where they come from. But, if anyone else has caught it, speak up. If it's coming from here the administrators need to know it.

LOL It just happened again. It is ONLY when I come here. Yes - I understand I can put some adware thing on, but I don't and this is the ONLY place I go to when it starts. 3/3 now. I don't go to racy sites...CNN, my email, and Houzz and here mostly on this laptop.

ETA -- Yep. I just went to 10 or so sites. Nothing. As soon as I come here, it starts.

Wouldn't it affect everyone if it were coming from this site? I have had no problem.

The only problem I've had with this site is that sometimes when I go to the end of a thread, the Houzz ads are moved up to block the last couple comments. I go back, click on the thread link again, scroll down, and it's back to normal.

No issues on this end, and I pop between two different browsers -- Chrome and Safari [Hey! Don't judge the latter...I have my reasons. ;) ] Maybe try a different browser?

ETA: Make that four browsers. I just cruised around in Opera and Firefox -- no pop-ups! What a pain for you, nightowl -- very annoying.

I do not run anit-virus and have not gotten a virus from here.. in fact, I have not gotten one from anywhere in a few years.

If a bad virus hits your system, it can hide even after cleaning and reinstall itself. Hard to pin-point exactly where it came from unless you can spot it the second it gets downloaded.

So, I did nothing to fix it last night. Today, no endless pop ups. Is that the sort of thing a site can control? As in - turn it on and off and to select visitors?

Technically, yes.. but really "high end" malware serves a purpose, to make money. It sends information somewhere. If it cannot talk to wherever it is sending that info, then it may appear dormant. I advise, always, after getting a really bad malware, to re-image the PC. If you have Windows 7.. you are uin luck and can think back to when you started having the issues and repair the system by restoring it to a past image.. (you reboot the PC and hit F8 continuously until it boots with a menu and then select repair).

Now, that is the extent of my tech support lol or I could be here all day and night.. heh.. but, a good PC tech will know how to do this and IF a restore point is available to you, you pick when you got the virus.. go back a week or two more to be safe, and restore.

Documents etc will not be affected, but all system files, which it uses, will be restored.

Then, all temp files need to be cleaned BEFORE proceeding to browse the internet... that way the files that caused this are gone too.

This laptop is my "surfing" laptop. My working laptop is very protected and I don't do much personal web browsing on it. So, I don't care too much. The point is/was, it only happens on this site. And, apparently, it turns off and on. I wonder if it being off right now has anything to do with me posting about it last night?

I use Firefox browser, and Adblock Plus/Adblock Edge to stop popups. If you use a less secure browser like IE, you may want to disable Flash from running, use text-only setting for a while, etc.

If you're n a PC, use Taskmanager.exe to see what processes are running, and stop them from there.

The worst malware I ever got was an Ask.com app that took over the browser. I eventually removed it, it was such a frustration.

What are the symptoms? I am wondering if you are seeing the regular ads that run on Houzz. A lot of people use Ad Block Plus to get rid of them.

Mostly something titled "stack". One visit resulted in my search engine and home page changing. I expect that sort of thing if I visit porn or warez sites. I don't expect it from a site like this. I guess I expect more...disappointing.

So. I am on a plane and on an iPad. I just did a search for houzz and malware. I do not have the affected laptop. I see houzz may put bookmarklet.exe which has been ID'd as malware. I will look to see when I get home.

bookmarklet.exe only affects IE, according to the top return on google. One more reason to not use IE, as if one more reason was necessary.

I don't think Houzz itself is doing that. Maybe a link or photo on Houzz led to something malicious. That happened to me browsing Pinterest. It was fortunately caught by my AV as it was trying to download a trojan. I would run a scan and then remove and reinstall your browser which might have been hijacked. It's easier to reinstall than fight it. If it still appears, completely reformat and reinstall your operating system.

nightowl, are you using Firefox? I had a similar problem last year ... I would click on a heading in GW and it would open to a random site on another page, constant pop-ups, etc. I notified GW and although they did ask me to specify details, I don't believe anything was done on their end and the issues remained. I paid a service provided my my ISP that supposedly cleared my computer of malware, but still had the problem, and only when accessing GW. I ended up deleting Firefox and the problem went with it. I've been using Chrome since without issues. I also installed Malwarebytes and run it periodically.

That is a different area than where the comment referenced in your other post is. The comment Houzz notified you of shows after my 8:41 entry.

Sometimes posts are accidentally caught in our filter. Looks like the post referenced above was caught then released a short while later. It appears a few posts up from where you are looking.

Aaahhh...Emily -- thanks! I assumed this morning that nightowl's 'missing' post was coming through to me in real time. All better now. :)
