last modified: 10 years ago

Here's the last thread on wise quotes:

http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/3410183/wise-quotes-that-help-with-life-and-gardening-and-happiness?n=38

I start a new thread on wise quotes to gather wisdom from across the world .. Would love to hear from Khalid (Pakistan), Jess (South Africa), Msdorkgirl (Hawaii), Carol (Canada) .. and people from different culture & countries. THANK YOU.

Here's a quote from World Vision founder (international charity organization). "Let us do what God wants done." Bob Pierce.

“What you are is God's gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.”
Hans Urs von Balthasar, Prayer

Roses that gave me immense happiness? Sonia Rykiel (raspberry rose), Versigny (apricot pie), and Perle d' Or (strong musk), and William Shakespeare 2000 (lilac old rose), the branch below is Annie L. McDowell, 100% thornless rose, strong musk and lavender.

A friend gave me a red bloom which lasted long in the vase and smelled strong like cherry/raspberry pie. She doesn't know its name, so I searched on HMF for "raspberry scent" and found 2 red roses: Love's Promise and Veteran's Honor, with Love's Promise having a stronger scent. I had Firefighter (Hacienda) and it was a woman's perfume scent. After asking the nursery & plus many people report that Veteran's Honor only has a light scent or no scent. I think that red bloom was Love's Promise. see below:

    http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=18080&tab=1

Khalid: I went back to your thread where you posted the "unknown" red rose, and I double-check your foliage .. it better matches with Love's Promise .. so I don't think it's Veteran's Honor (light green). Love's Promise has the typical French Meilland leaves: darker green. All the French Meilland roses I bought have very strong scents & prefer alkaline clay ... so my friend's bloom got to be Love's Promise.

Below excerpt in HMF is about Veteran's Honor rose:

20 SEP 06 byJohn Moody " I purchased an own root from J&P two years ago. That first year it was a bit slow on the uptake while it established itself. However, this year it has taken off and is bigger and even produces more blooms than my four year old grafted bush from J&P that I am sure is on Dr. Huey rootstock." John Moody, zone 5.

We,call both below Lokelani but pretty certain they are completely different:

    two Scentimental buds

Bolero own root (has tried to bud out more than Heirloom Roses' Happy Child and Eden/New Dawn)

    My everblooming Distant Drums

    Tahitian Sunset

Summer Love succumbing to rot or something (any suggestions would be helpful ) :(

Msgirl: THANK YOU for those pics. of your favorite roses. Lokelani is so pretty !! It might be Monsieur Tilier: http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.4360

Your sentimental have such healthy foliage !! Black-cane, or canker is from acidic & soaking wet medium. Some options: sprinkle wood ash, drill holes on the side for better drainage, or start own-root cuttings. Dr. Huey-rootstock rots when the soil is too wet or too acidic. I would start some own-root cuttings in a terracotta pot (use 1/2 perlite with 1/2 non-peat potting soil).

All 6 of my roses in a wet bed lost their Dr.Huey ... they grew their own roots since I buried them 4 inch. below ground, then topped with 6 inch. of soil.

Really love the 8-min exercise, 3-times a day to jump start my metabolism. Lots of time I meant 8 min, but ended up 2-hours cleaning, or 1/2 hour in the garden. Below video is 8-min of ab-exercise. One needs a firm-exercise mat for back support. I have such, it's very useful.

Did some searches on happiness, and found quotes which agree with what I found: Happiness depend on what I do, rather than what I get from others.

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”
    Dalai Lama XIV

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others
    . Christian D. Larson

“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
    Tom Bodett

“It's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it.”
    Lou Holtz

You need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. That's the only thing you should be trying to control.”
    Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

“The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.”
    Kalu Ndukwe Kalu

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection”
    Gautama Buddha

"One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 36:40

Sam: Absolutely gorgeous view, you are blessed to live in such a scenic place. Those islands on the water are so pretty.

Msgirl: Just saw those awesome bouquets right after I post. THANK YOU, I treasure them ... I wish I could smell them !!

I watched travel show to Munich, Germany last night. Rick Steves talked about the history of Germany, such as the war between the Catholics and the Protestants which killed 1/3 of Germany. From Wikipedia: "The Thirty Years' War was fought between 1618 and 1648, principally on the territory of today's Germany, and involved most of the major European powers. Beginning as a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire ... During the war, Germany's population was reduced by 30% on average. In the territory of Brandenburg, the losses had amounted to half, while in some areas an estimated two thirds of the population died. The Swedish armies alone destroyed 2,000 castles, 18,000 villages and 1,500 towns in Germany, one-third of all German towns. Huge damage was done to monasteries, churches and other religious institutions. "

People can kill for different interpretations of the same Bible. Beliefs are useless when it's used to fight & control, and to break all the laws in the Ten Commandments. The most effective religion I had seen is from the heart (love & respect for life), rather than the head (ego & control & fixed dogmas).

Went grocery shopping last week, someone was careless and misplaced a frozen juice of pineapple with other juices. I picked that up by mistake, and I'm allergic to pineapple .. it's time-consuming to make that separately for my husband. For every breaking of the law, and for every mistake we make ... others have to pay for it. But not for long ... my favorite quote from the Bible is "A man reap what he sows", either on this life, or in the eternal life after. The best quote of life after death came from the near-death experience of an 8-year-old boy in Brazil, see excerpt below:

"but first the angel started to show me my life like a movie. The first image I saw was something bad that I did (I used a key to scratch a car). I could feel the pain that I caused because of my actions ... everything I saw I could feel the results of it ... I felt the owner of the car feelings and thoughts, then he told his wife about it and I could feel her pain too." http://www.aleroy.com/board306.htm

I collected NDE in the below link. For everything we do or say, there's a ripple-effect that spread across to others. We don't see that until after we die, and eternal life is where "a man reap what he sows" .. that's when he/she will feel the result of every action, and every word.

Msgirl: I love your bouquet, esp. the unknown pink bloom ... so many petals. I like the green leaf you stuck in there. Legends is a big bloom, so pretty.

Went through the many summaries of NDE and they are similar like the angel told professor Howard Storm: "love the person that you're with".

Sandra Rogers' Near-Death-Experience: "I asked the light, which I call Christ, how people from other religions get to heaven. I was shown that the group we profess alliance to is inconsequential. What is important is how we show our love for God by the way we treat each other. " Sandra Rogers.

Some quotes from Professor Howard Storm, who wrote a book on his near-death experience: http://ndestories.org/howard-storm/

“The angels and Jesus had no interest in the track meet competitions I won or lost. They were interested in the relationships and how we encouraged or hurt one another.”

“It is impossible to love another person unless we love ourselves Without the love of God, it is impossible to love ourselves because every human being is aware of their flawed nature and sinfulness.”

“The only authentic love in this world is achieved when there is a balance between love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self.”

“Our purpose is to know and do God’s will in this life, and we do this when we love one another as God loves us. Every person, without exception, needs to be loved by us. This is the most difficult and most important lesson of our life.”

“And he said, love the person that you’re with." Howard Storm

So glad I chose "wise quotes" as a topic, it helps me to realize what matter the most during Christmas: How we treat others, rather than gifts, or material possessions. Some quotes from Alon Anava, an angry man who became gentle after his near-death-experience:

    http://ndestories.org/alon-anava/

" A person purchases life insurance in this life …why don’t you purchase spiritual life insurance? ... when you get to the other side at least you come with something ... Give charity every day. Give a smile, help somebody. When you are standing in front of those judges everything is weighed. A small deed you do in this world can change everything. But at least something small! Whatever you do in this world echoes in eternity.” Alon Anava

Alon Anava wrote how the "ripple effect" of one's behavior echoes in eternity.

"I had done bad things. This was payback time ... Every time I saw my sins there are no words to describe the fear, pain, or shame. I saw every sin that I did; it came to revenge. It came to take back what I took. It came in a form that was extremely negative, scary or painful ... You create your own destructive angels ... painful, scary… I knew I created this for myself. I started screaming, “God! Get me out of here! Help me!" Alon Anava

*** Peter Russell's near-death-experience from suicide and what matters most life:

    http://www.nderf.org/NDERF/NDE_Experiences/peter_r's_nde.htm

"The Spirit said "it was your fault that you died, because you were not looking after yourself. That is considered a form of suicide, and there is a penalty that must be paid. The Spirit then communicated; "You have no right to hurt yourself or anyone else, because you and everyone else are the personal property of God."

"I learned that we are supposed to be responsible for ourselves & each other, because what we do to ourselves & each other is ACTUALLY FELT BY THE CREATOR. I am less judgmental regarding people. I consider employment a public service first, and a means to my personal ends second." Peter Russell

I read about the Canadian air being sold in China...that is so sad...why don't they just stop creating massive air pollution? why not use other forms of energy? there are so many options...

but then, it's might not be as cheap? with less profit in the end?

and at whom's cost? do they care what planet their own children and grand children will inherit? and I'm not just referring to the Chinese, but to all money moguls...

and now the UK is planning on doing Fracking in all their own nature reserves?

isn't that insanely greedy and short sighted? haven't they seen the movie called Gasland?

why don't they rather use clean energy themselves?

Thank you, Sam, for that excellent link. I watched it, very well-made & enjoyable. The message is "don't kill the soil with chemicals, the soil can't produce well, plus plants become diseased, plus chemicals hurt our health, even tiny dose of weed-killer can harm fetus". I agree, chemicals is a greedy way to produce less quality foods, more pests, plus hurt the earth.

Decade ago I tested chemical fertilizer on herbs like parsley, cilantro, and sage. They had great flavor with just natural soil alone, the minute I gave it MiracleGro SOLUBLE fertilizer NPK 20-20-20 .. I got twice more herbs, but horrible scents. The flavor was so harsh, so strong that I could not use for cooking.

My Mom grew cilantro in her large garden, with just cow manure .. her cilantro has much better flavor than store-bought cilantro. This past spring I grew cilantro with just soil & small dose of chicken manure .. the flavor was many times better than store-bought cilantro.

When I researched whether Azomite improve the taste of tomato, I watched YouTube where folks tasted tomatoes grown on Azomite, Biochar, or chemical fertilizer. Rank in taste: Biochar, Azomite, and last is chemical fertilizer.

Biochar is burning organic matter without oxygen. My neighbor is burning woods and put wood ash in his tomato garden for the 1st time. Next year I will ask if his tomato taste better than previous chemical-grown. Below is my neighbor's small fire-pit, but he set up to burn a big log. The reddish stuff on the ground is our black gumbo-clay made red & fluffy by the extreme heat of the fire-pit.

Some quotes that I like from the list of top 29 quotes-site:

“In seeking happiness for others, you will find it in yourself.” – Unknown

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Viktor Frankl, Holocaust survivor

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Gandhi

“I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.” – Corazon Aquino

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” – Stephen Covey

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” – Mother Theresa

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” – Albert Einstein

My most favorite quote from the Bible: " John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Jesus Christ.

Favorite quotes from the books I read, don't remember the sources: "The only thing that we can take along when we die is what we had given to others."

"We create our own bondage through greed, pride, and acquisitions."

"Your worth comes from the love and kindness you show to others."

"Evil is to judge, condemn, control, and put people down. Goodness is to understand, love, add value, and respect others' freewill."

"Don't let others determine your worth or feelings."

"You only get hurt when you want something from another person."

Sam: I like what the Indian woman-professor said in that You-Tube: "We kill the soil with chemicals, how can it produce for us?" That professor made the accurate observation that without organic matter on top (leaves & decayed plants & manure) ... the soil get dried out fast.

I had just watered my pots outside 2 days ago. Today the temp. fell down to 20's ... and the soil dried out immediately ... soil dries out fast in extreme temp., be it hot or cold. I'm going to top those pots with leaves before putting them into the garage.

Khalid mentioned that he prays 5 times a day ... that's smart to connect in advance with the Creator, or God, whom we will spend eternity with. Thanks, Khalid, for setting a good example. I have just realized that whatever I do for myself: stuffing food in my mouth, buying stuff ... will perish. But whatever I do for God lasts forever.

What we do for ourselves have temporary value: temporary pleasure in wrong-doing, but eternal guilt. Temporary pleasure in food, but years of fat-deposit. What we do for God: giving to charities will echo forever in eternity, and bring eternal reward and happiness.

Great info Straw. Never knew that soil dries out in very cold temp also. I thought it freezes when it is very cold. Is freezing also like drying out?

Straw wrote: What we do for ourselves have temporary value: temporary pleasure in wrong-doing, but eternal guilt. Temporary pleasure in food, but years of fat-deposit. What we do for God: giving to charities will echo forever in eternity, and bring eternal reward and happiness.

Very true and well said. IMHO, there is nothing that can give more happiness to a human being than helping others and sharing one's wealth, emotions and knowledge with those who need, without expecting a return.

However, I do feel that while maintaining balance and staying withing limits, we should enjoy our lives and thank God for that. We should never try to isolate ourselves from other fellow beings and routines of life, including luxuries.

Now, what is balance and what constitutes the limit may have different understanding for different people but with firm belief (in God), good intentions, knowledge, rationale / logic and humility, one can develop a better understanding of what is balance and where the limits lie. After all nature is the best example of balance where everything has limits. Whenever those limits are crossed, results are bad; at times catastrophic and irreversible. For human beings in my view, balance lies in leading (and enjoying) life within limits and not in distancing oneself from routines and luxuries of life nor in crossing limits and pursue material objectives alone.

I do believe that aspects related to BELIEF have to be rational, logical and based on TRUTH and if they are not, it's hard to have a long lasting belief. Weak belief leads towards hypocrisy and crossing of limits. Understanding nature strengthens one's belief logically and rationally and makes one tolerant and flexible. These views, however, are personal and open to criticism.

    best regards

Yes, Home Depot sells a big bag from a big company for 20 bucks, I buy "sponge rok" which is $4 for the 16 oz or something, but I figure I'm supporting the local economy.

Pretty Khalid, you lucked out with that Bolshoi unknown.

Jess: Agree with you, I adore Khalid's Whisky Mac .. so photogenic. I like Sam's cottage garden, very soft & natural.

Msgirl: I looked up Luscious rose .. Wow! I love that deep pink. I have problems with wimpy roses in cold zone .. Angel Face is really short, even as grafted, under 1 foot, and two of them died in my zone 5a winter. But small roses are perfect for pots.

John Moody wrote from his cold zone 5b: " My Luscious HT rose is now two years old and the bush is still extremely small so I get very few blooms. However, the blooms are actually of good size and have wonderful color and form is very high centered and star-like in appearance. I would love to keep it, but I wonder just how vigorous and tall it will hopefully get. I don't like wimpy roses of any size." John

The biochar is something to look into. It is burned in low level oxygen.

From what I have seen, the biochar needs to be seasoned activated charged in the compost for an amount of time together with the biology. I have not used biochar but I have seen how they make it in videos. It sequesters the carbon and creates carbon micro areas for the biology in the soil.

It increases surface area for the bacteria and fungi.

Sam: Agree with you that biochar is low-level oxygen and slow-burning. Here's an excerpt from below link: "Without sophisticated kilns and ovens to produce modern biochar, this ancient material was likely made by setting alight a pile of organic material before covering it with dirt to eliminate oxygen but hold in the heat from the fire which, in turn, baked the organic matter.

The above link is worth clicking, it shows vigorous plants grown with biochar, versus without. The reason why biochar is better than wood-ash? It's like cooking food with a slow-cooker (crock-pot), versus burning food on a hot fire. Slow-cooking retains more nutrients, versus LESS nutrients with fast burning & lots of oxygen.

When my neighbor burned wood in a open-fire-pit, the heat was so intense that it converted our heavy-black-clay into reddish clay. Nutrients in foods are destroyed at high temp, same with wood-ash: less nutrients than biochar.
