Finding vintage tile replacement isn't easy. We have a 1931 Ludowici tile roof which was damaged by a tree branch several years ago. There is a local tile salvage yard in our area which has contacts nationwide and they originally believed that replacements could be found. Unfortunately, several months later, that avenue was finally abandoned and the process of making replacement tiles was started. It took a couple of rounds to get some acceptable matching tiles but eventually they were able to fix the roof, moving original tiles into visible location and hiding the newer tiles on the back side of the roof.

There is a large salvage tile yard somewhere in the Dallas area which would be a good place to start.

This won't be a cheap endeavor...if you happen to find the tiles, the freight will be only a small portion of the cost. When we had our roof fixed, the salesperson from the roofing company said that it would cost approximately $70,000 to have that roof installed today...probably $4,500 - $5,000 per square. The vintage tiles are somewhat cheaper; as I recall, the price was somewhere around $16-$18 each.

I've been in preliminary contact with the Ludowici company only at this point. I can live with modern replacements as we could just scatter them amongst the vintage tiles. I need to ask: did your custom replacements cost $16-18 or was that the salvage yard cost? The Spanish tiles from 1920s or 30s must be identical to their modern counterparts right? Or am I mistaken?
