The range or cooktop will tell you how high the hood must be above the cook surface - it varies by manufacturer and the size heat output of the cooking unit. You can put it higher than what is required, but it may not be as effective. If you want it higher, then you may need to go up on the cfm's of the hood. You will also need to address make up air if you go above 400 cfm.
