Smoothies--please help

I am a years-long lurker who really needs help. On Monday DH was diagnosed with esophageal cancer & can only consume liquids for the foreseeable future. Annie recently posted her go-to smoothie which I can't find. If anyone can post favorite healthy smoothies I'd be ever so grateful. Thank you!

I'm so sorry to hear this. Hopefully getting a variety of smoothies and other forms of liquid nutrition will help. Most nutritious smoothies.

Are you also going to do juicing?

We don't have a juicer and don't plan to buy one for now. Think we should?

I would. First though, check with your doctors. Juicing can add lots and lots of good vitamins, enzymes, minerals etc... but it also concentrates sugars. If a person is diabetic for example, fresh juice can be extremely beneficial, but depending on a person's conditions, and what they juice, a lot can be counterproductive. It also depends on what you decide to juice.

Short answer... definitely get one. Slightly longer answer... ask the doctors, then get one and learn to use it well.

I state these 'warnings' only for you to learn more about it without making it sound like a cure-all. However, many people have used juicing to give their body's own immune system plenty to draw upon.

If the doctors give the okay, then a good juicer is a great idea. But look into it first, some are more of a pain in cleaning and use then they are worth. Honestly, there are 2 factors that are very important considerations other than performance. Size of the feedtube, and ease of cleaning.

If you have to cut everything up into tiny little pieces, or if it is too difficult to clean, it will become a paperweight. You'll never use it. I have a Breville and love it! Easy to clean, easy to use, and it's about 10 years old and going strong. I have the Juice Fountain Elite, but they make a smaller one that tends to get the most recommendations for performance at a bit lower price.

One more thing to remember about juicing... I am a devoted advocate, but again, it's not a cure-all. In fact, the same benefit to juicing is also a detriment. Juicing concentrates fresh produce. If it's clean, fresh, nutritious produce, you'll get concentrated clean, fresh, nutritious juice. If it's contaminated produce, you'll get concentrated contaminates.

I hope the best for both of you!

Sorry to hear about your DH. Sending you good vibes.

When checking with your doctor about juicing also ask about acidity in foods, depending on ingredients used both smoothies and juices can be quite acidic. This could be very irritating to an esophagus already irritated by treatment.

I am sorry to hear this diagnosis. I have my every 5-year EGD scheduled next week to make sure I haven't developed Barrett's due to reflux. Anyway, you could try Simple Green Smoothies - they have a web site with recipes. Once you make several, you'll probably develop your own recipes based on what you like. I find I don't need to measure anything, I just throw things together. I don't have a juicer, so I don't do the green juice recipes, but I have both a full size Ninja blender and a hand held immersion blender that I use to make green smoothies. My most recent new recipe is coconut or almond milk, a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder, some frozen raspberries or half a frozen banana, and a large handful of mixed greens (kale and spinach). It's really pretty delicious! Simple Green Smoothies

Sorry to hear about his diagnosis. You shouldn't have to figure this out alone. If the oncologist hasn't already provided nutritional information or a referral to a dietician, ask for one.

This place is a wonderful resource for help and support, to supplement the medical professionals, so I hope you'll take advantage of the collected wisdom for any issues during your journey. Be sure to take care of yourself also. You can't help him if you're worn down.

    Good luck.
