Using a nightstand as a living room end table

In my search for an end table with some storage, I've started looking at nightstands and thinking, why not use one? Do these say "bedroom" to you??

This is the end table I'm getting for one end of the sofa.

And these are two nightstands I'm looking at for the other end. They're the same height (within an inch) of the end table, and the same wood.

The coffee table in the room is the same wood, Parsons style, with black legs like the first nightstand above.

What do you think?

Oops, here is one more under consideration.

I like how Room & Board furniture style mixes with my Stickley mission oak pieces. I'd be getting these in walnut (as shown).

I like your first 3 very much. The last one looks like a nightstand to me. In fact, it's very similar to the 1947 one I have from my parents.

Funny, I'm the opposite of deeinohio. I think the only one that doesn't really look like either a bedside table or office furniture is the third one. Lol.

I like the first 3 as well. I actually have two end tables in our guest room that I have been using as night stands.

I prefer the last one you posted. It has the look that you need.

Another vote for one out of the first group you posted. I like the hardware on the first nightstand.

Looking at my own pictures...wonder if the first one is too matchy with my coffee table? It has a walnut top and the same black metal legs. I am not sure I'll be happy if one end table looks like it "matches" the coffee table and the other doesn't. I have a pet peeve about matching too much...in fact, it goes against my nature to get end tables that even match the coffee table this closely, but I love Room and Board and have not found end tables anywhere that work well (or that I like enough) with my particular blend of furniture.

I am also liking some of the RH Modern end tables but they are so pricey (not that R&B is not) and are made from some wacky wood that I've never heard of.

I like all of them, but the last one the best.

Have you looked at CL or eBay? At less than 1/2 the price of the round one, I like this Baker burled walnut on eBay.

Gosh, I love Room and Board! Love the round one.

p.s. I've always loved the Linear line of their furniture and have quite a few of their pieces. So my vote is the Linear table.

My3dogs, yes, I did a spin through ebay and CL. Nothing strikes me yet.

Well, the Stickley sale ad arrived and turned DH's head, so I may take a look there sometime soon. For whatever reason I was all set to order the R&B tables and now I'm not quite sure. We are at the stage where we really want quality because we have replaced some cheaply made furniture with "good stuff" over time...which just means that I agonize a little more over every purchase. The one constant over 20 years of owning this house is that we both really love Stickley Mission furniture, and even though my head says "ugh, don't get end tables that match the TV console!" my heart swoons over pieces like these...

i really like the second one down from the last group of pics you posted!! the last one is interesting too- would need to see it in person. they are definitely a different look than the 1st group of tables you show.

of the 1st group of pics you show, the 1st and 2nd tables remind me very much of my kids' nightstands in their bedrooms- i wouldn't want either as an endtable... the 3rd nightstand is the only one i might consider as an end table...

I am looking for a round table for one end of the sofa, and a square-ish one for the other end. I like #2 and #4 above the best too! I might change my mind when I see them in person, who knows.

The other wood furnishings in the room are pictured below, so you can see how these fit in! (The TV console and bookcase are both in the darker oak finish.) The coffee table is Room & Board walnut.

Sure not looking like nightstands to my eyes, but no matter. Dressers, buffets, armoires, and 'other' furniture designed for a specifc room, isn't so *specific* anymore. Practicality and necessity dictate the why and wherefors in todays homes. I actuallity love seeing a dresser behind the sofa in a family room, especially if it's a vintage 'model'. And the storage space would be great.

Patty, that's what I am after -- storage for those bits and pieces that end up all over the living room. Thanks, actually, for reminding me about that, because the Stickley pieces don't have any storage!

This is a pic of a coordinating small dresser to the last R&B "nightstand" I posted below. Does this look more or less bedroomy? I kind of prefer the open bottom for books and magazines.

    The one I originally posted:

I like the side view of the legs.

In terms of size, it is the same height as the table I'd be using on the other end, and pretty close to the same width, so scale-wise, I think it works.

You can see I am talking myself into this, now, can't you? I just know that drawer is going to make me so happy.

I think #3 above makes the nicest transition between your current pieces.

You probably don't want me to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway. There is simply no comparison between those R&B pieces and the Stickley. You don't buy Stickley because it has ample storage, you buy it because it's Stickley. ;-) Those are some gorgeous mission pieces you shared above. What does your heart tell you?

Maybe shop for a mission style nightstand?

Well, sort of to Jen's point...if I do mission style, I'm doing Stickley. I have a pet peeve about pseudo Stickley.

Jen...my heart says oooh, Stickley, but my head says that's a lot to spend if the pieces don't work in the next house.

There is obviously a reason why I'm "thinking out loud" on this forum. If I was sure about what I want to do, I would have done it already. What I probably need to do is drive to the darn Stickley store and oogle the stuff in person and, of course, see the prices since they aren't listed on the web site.

Well, I do know what you mean. We recently looked at Stickley pieces at a local furniture store that I hadn't been to in years (and it's the only place I know of around here that carries it), and were just aghast at the prices. Couldn't come close to affording it now, so I do treasure the pieces I was able to buy "back in the day." Still ... gosh, there's just nothing quite like the beauty of it, is there?

Just wanted to follow up and say that I had gotten (sale) prices for the Stickley items and DH gave his blessing, but I then realized that they were all too tall for my sofa. I really don't like it when end tables are higher than sofa arms. I was glad I did some measuring and by doing so, saved some money. This morning I ordered the original pieces I was looking at from R&B: the round table, and this "nightstand" (ssh, don't tell anyone):

I am happy with my choices! They're arriving quickly, too -- next week -- for almost-immediate gratification. :-)
