Pendant Light, Flush mount, or can lights over kitchen sink?
Comments (7)I'm sure your doing under counter LED so double check that these are the new emitter chip technology as it makes a world of differences. Lighting is often the most neglected area of design and layering lighting sources the best way to improve a space. Comments (12)touchadream, you have a wonderful concept plan going already, so I won't pitch you for my time--but I will say that you might be wish to deal with the floor and backsplash first. With the room well in place, the lighting can become just the right finishing touch. But, I find that selecting fixtures earlier works best if the rest of the plan is less fixed. In that case, you would be selecting items to riff off the fixtures (and cabinets). In your case, you want a fixture that riffs off the decorative collection you describe. Don't give up hope--at the same time I was placing two 14,000 euro chandeliers in a foyer, I found $19 CAD pendants for a kitchen -- each effective because the lighting "fit". Comments (13)My two cents: I'm on strike. Decorative lighting has gotten so ridiculously expensive and frankly, snotty! My suggestion would be a simple, oversized drum shade on an inexpensive pendant fixture over the table with two matching but much smaller drum shades over the island on the same, cheapo fixtures. Takes 5 minutes to change out shade styles when you're feeling frisky....See MoreConversion of pendant lights over kitchen island to recessed lights.
Comments (1)Based on your description this sounds "do-able". To replace the pendants with recessed fixtures you will need to do some patching and painting, as the box for a surface mounted light is quite small and for recessed fixtures are much larger. They are also usually mounted to the framing differently. If you are putting the new recessed lights in an insulated ceiling you will also need to make sure that you by and IC rated fixture (insulated). One thing I would recommend for the recessed lights is to check with your vendor on the beam spread (photometrics). Since the purpose of these lights will be to illuminate the island, a general purpose fixture may be too broad. You may need something more like a pin-spot to do the trick. https://www.houzz.com/photos/hillside-house-contemporary-kitchen-san-francisco-phvw-vp~41858717 Best of luck, Marc A.
