What is the width of the wall the tv is on? I think that makes a difference too.

The console should be at least as wide as the TV, better proportions when it's 25% wider.

I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. I'd say "the same width as the tv." for symmetry you can go as narrow as 24" if it's sturdy enough, but I wouldn't go over a foot on each side unless you have a large space and/or need the storage.

If I had it my way, all we'd have on the wall is the TV and everything else would be hidden.

My console is 60 inch. Tv is 65 inch And will be mounted on the wall. The width of the tv is 57.1. Do you think the console will be too small? Look funny?

In my opinion, having the console match the TV width looks wrong. It boxes the TV in and forces your eyes to focus on the console and TV at the same time. You also can't place any décor on top of the console as it would block the TV screen. I would go with a wider console than the TV as it will draw your focus to the TV and allow room for décor that can sit easily on either side of the TV without obstructing the view. As some have pointed out, the size of the wall is important as well. If you have limited wall space, going with a wide console that is close to the edges of the wall may not look right. If you have plenty of wall space, go with a wider console than the TV.
