Your Super Bowl Party Menu?

last modified: 10 years ago

For those of us who will be watching the game on Super Bowl Sunday, what are your plans for food that day? And, who are you rooting for?

(If you're against football in general, please skip this thread. I'm not looking for a debate on the game; I just want a fun, interesting exchange of menu ideas)

Our Super Bowl party menu so far:

  • Beef brisket sliders with homemade (by my good friend, not me) buns & various condiments for them
  • fresh veggie tray with hummus varieties
  • Buffalo Wild Wings' boneless wings, regular flavor w Ranch and blue cheese dipping sauces
  • Nachos, using GF chips for one of the guys who absolutely can't eat anything w gluten, poor guy! (he'll skip the slider buns)
  • my guacamole & (GF) chips
  • Loaded baked potato skins
  • homemade chocolate fudge brownies
  • fresh fruit tray w lime, honey, yogurt dip
  • beer, wine coolers and iced tea

Oh, and we're rooting for the Denver Broncos here!

(*edited to add that I don't mean to sound snarky. I totally understand many of the reasons some people don't like football. I'm just looking for a foodie discussion here, and don't want it to take off in another direction :~ )

I'll be watching it, but with my (very ill) father, so no party, and I'll be trying to get him to eat something, anything, but will probably be stuffing my own face, preferably with mint chocolate chip ice cream from JP Licks!

As a Pats fan, I think it's illegal here to root for either the Broncos or the Panthers, so I'll root for a good game, no wardrobe malfunctions at half-time, no earthquakes, and while I think the Panthers are going to trounce Denver, I would be happy to see Manning enjoy a final game of his career which reflects an amazing career (but please don't tell any Pats fans I said that, Linen).

DH will be making his really good baked sausage-cheese balls. I always have to nibble a few (or a dozen) over the course of the game. I may also make pork loin and carmelized onion sliders. They really went over big for our last tailgate.

Go Broncos! But have to say Cam Newton is a super-quarterback and the Panthers have a great team.

(((Tibbie))) Sending prayers that your dad will have a good, enjoyable, comfortable day with you watching the game. And, don't overdose on that ice cream, it sounds wonderful!

OMG, Outside, my friend Susan makes those sausage cheese balls, too, and I love them. I hope she'll be coming to the party . . . and bringing some!

i'm going to be rooting for the broncos too!

i'm making a lot of wings- with a couple of different sauces- some buffalo, some bourbon and am making some with a honey ginger glaze. saw in this week's food section of the paper that if you coat the wings with some baking powder before baking it will make the skin extra crispy- have never done that before, but will give it a try.

also making a mexican layered dip with chips and guacamole potato skins (also in the paper this week!)

will cut up peppers for dipping. i will probably try to make modified GF piggies in the blanket, only put the dough in mini muffin tins- saw a recipe online for similar... if feeling ambitious, might make mac and cheese bites in muffin tins too- plenty of food! will also pick up some hard cider to substitute for beer- that is one GF substitute that i really like!!

Yummy ideas, Busy! I actually learned how to make Buffalo Style Chicken Wings way back when they were still only a craze in Buffalo. This was in 1976 or 1977. I was visiting friends on a trip there and they took me to this little restaurant in a strip shopping center for wings. After raving about this new treat, the owner took me back to his kitchen and showed me how he made them. I'm sure that it was because he knew I was young, living in South Florida at the time and would not be starting a restaurant in competition with him (LOL). His is the standard by which I judge all wings to this day. Dry, fresh wings, tossed in a mix of melted butter and hot sauce. About 40/60% (I think he used Tabasco, but I've also used Louisiana Hot Sauce). And then fried in a very hot oil in a commercial French fryer. The very hot oil is the key to crisp wings . . . that and cooking then until past the rubbery wing phase (shudder!). Drain and serve with a side of good blue cheese dressing ( I always use Marie's) along with carrot and celery sticks. TDF when done right!

We're getting together with friends. I'm taking crab dip and a meat and cheese platter. I know we'll have pizza and probably wings. I'm not sure what everyone else is bringing. We'll have a variety of snacking foods.

It doesn't matter to me who wins. DH is rooting for Denver.

I said a prayer for your dad Tibbrix. I'm sorry he's not doing well.

No party here, but I will do up a few snacks for the day. What are these sausage-cheese balls?? Sounds like something SO would love.

DH and I will be rooting for the Panthers in front of a cozy fire, after overindulging in yummy SuperBowl fare! A part of me will be cheering for Peyton, but just looking forward to a good game!

    On our menu for Sunday;

Margaritas (most likely) and I'm sure a craft beer or two for DH

    Jumbo shrimp cocktail

Buffalo wings. I bake and baste and bake and baste the wings til they get crispy, but with the meat practically falling off the bones--yum! I baste them with a hot sauce (Frank's) and margarine mixture. We'll have them with the usual condiments; blue cheese dressing, celery sticks, carrots.

Baked potato skins (regular cheddar on mine, habanero cheddar on DH's!) served with sour cream and chopped scallions. (No bacon unless we pick up some turkey or veggie bacon when we go to the store to buy the chicken wings)

Going to attempt to make baked zucchini chips and chipotle mayo and guacamole for dipping.

Possibly bruschetta and/or hummus with the shrimp cocktail earlier in the afternoon. Will see how I'm doing making all the other stuff. :)

We are staying home just the 2 of us. We are going to have buffalo wings and blue cheese dip. My cleaning ladies husband makes the best home made salsa, she just brought me a big jar of his salsa, we will have it with tortilla chips. I got the best new tortilla chips at Costco, called Late July Sea salt by the seashore, they are multi grain, gluten free, non gmo, 100% whole grains, organic with sea salt. Awesome chips and the bag is very pretty too. Glad I got 2 bags. I have fresh avocados to make some guacamole. And we can't forget the chili cheese dip, block of Velveeta, can of wolf's chili, can of rotels, all melted together in the microwave yummy dip. Beer for him. I don't have a favorite team, but since I once lived in Denver and used to be a Denver fan I guess I will resurrect that spirt!

I'm not sure what our menu is yet, but I'm sure it will be a lot of junk food (two teenage boys!). My 13 y/o ds has a basketball game at 5pm and it's 30 minutes away, so he's not pleased. Since we will be rushing home from that, whatever we have will have to be prepared prior to going to his game. My parents invited themselves over and then offered to bring homemade soup and an appetizer. I'm sure, knowing my boys, that we will also have chips and homemade guacamole, onion dip and potato chips, and dh's homemade buffalo chicken wings. I'll probably make a salad to go with the soup but waiting first to see what they are going to make. I'll have my girls make something for dessert. I'd have a much more creative menu if we were having a party, but we never do anymore since the game is later and our kids have school the next morning.

    They don't get Monday off for Lincoln's birthday, 4kids? I do :D

No, but they get Wednesday off for Ash Wednesday! ;) Catholic school.... We are going skiing for the day. They do also have next Monday off for President's Day. And they were just off nearly a week for the blizzard, and then a 2 hr delay today due to freezing rain. Bleh.

Close friends are coming up from the city overnight. So we can drink! Don't have a team in the game -- no Patriots or Jets so...

    Menu includes:

    Guacamole and chips

Shrimp with sesame and cocktail sauces

    Chopped Salad

    Arroz con Pollo

    Pineapple Pie

And wine, of course! I also may buy some beer.

Oh my gosh, I've just gotten back from the grocery store, buying lots of ingredients for Sunday's party. Just reading through all of your foodie plans has made me ravenous . . . and craving wings! It's only 4PM here, so I need to take my mind off all this yummy food for a bit if I can.

Mellow Mushroom here and we are Panther fans! Go Cam! Mom and Dad are Auburn grads and so is Cam. But, I also live in SC, Panthers is The team.

It will be nice and relaxing here, with just DH, DS, and I. Denver is the closest NFL team to where we live, so we'll root for them. I'll actually be somewhat interested because I put money in the office "squares" pool :-) It's still freezing cold here, so we'll have nachos during the game, while the chili is simmering.

Not really following the game, but I'm out of town visiting my parents, so I'll take them to a nice sushi restaurant they want to try out. It is high season here, but the restaurant won't be crowded this Sunday!

I'm thinking of picking up some wings and some blue cheese (to try my hand at making my own, healthier, blue cheese dip). Wings are real cheap right now. I may even get an avocado or two and slice them up with some grapefruit sections (one of my favorite salad creations Mom used to make).

I don't watch the game (no cable or dish connection, for one), but the evening after, I like watching the ads and excerpts from the Puppy Bowl on YouTube. Those home-made Dorito ads are usually amazingly creative. (Although they've never ever convinced me to go buy a bag...)

Well, we are in NC....so rabid Panthers fans here! The entire area is in a frenzy...it is just so much fun. We have loved our team through some rough years so this has been so thrilling. Even more exciting then when we went 12 years ago. Houses are lit up in blue on our street, kids at schools painted sheets to hang from the fences, every one, every where is decked out in Panthers garb. Crossing our fingers they do well!

We are going to a big party. I am not a good cook, nor much of a foodie. I am bringing kid-friendly stuff....a plate of brownies and a huge batch of chicken tenders.

Fyi, Xochtil tortilla chips are far and away the best. They are nice and thin and do not taste of oil. fab.

Oh and I've posted this before but TJ blue cheese dressing is amazing, it tastes so fresh.... Try it you will never buy Marie's again. And never make your own either!

    LynnNM thanked MtnRdRedux

Also a fan of Xochitl chips-- they are thin and so crisp!

I will be making buffalo chicken nachos. I salt and pepper skinless chicken breasts then add a few pats of butter and completely douse the breasts in Frank's Hot Sauce. Bake until cooked through then shred with a fork when cooled enough to work with. I mix a little more hot sauce into the shredded chicken and refrigerate overnight.

Right before serving I assemble blue corn chips, chicken, finely diced jalapeno, scallions and a mix of cheddar, montery jack and manchego (or a mix of whatever I have!). Bake on a lowish temperature (300ish) for about 15 min.

I drizzle more hot sauce and some ranch dressing on top (I don't care for blue cheese) and serve with sliced cucumbers around the perimeter.. and extra ranch dressing.

Black bean nachos are also a favorite-- and now that I've thought of them, I may change my mind and go with that instead. I assemble with all the same above-- but I add diced tomatoes.

Our closest friends (two couples and 4 teenage kids) are coming over, which is our usual, because we have the biggest basement TV room including a ping pong table for anyone who doesn't care about football (like me). Pats fans here so I don't think anyone cares about the game itself that much. Our fancy menu includes pigs in blankets, a fruit platter, chili, chips and salsa, and pizza. Oh, and beer.

hmmm, good to know about the tj blue cheese dressing- have never tried it- we have a couple of blue cheese lovers here!

lynn, i have never deep fried wings, altho that's how the wing restaurants do it! i just deep fry anything! but, i'm anxious to try this baking powder tip! superbowl time is pretty much the only time i make them, and one of my kids will be here, so tasty traditional food is a must! :)

tibb- i love a good mint choc chip icecream! i just picked up a couple of talenti pints of it (along with a couple of other flavors! :) since you put the thought of it in my head!

I hope everyone had a fun and tasty Super Bowl Sunday. I love all of the new ideas (to me), which I'm saving for future party food ideas. Our own party was lots of fun. Our favorite, the Broncos won, which was nice . . . although none of us were that committed. It was just great being with good friends, laughing and chatting, eating yummy foods, playing with the kids, voting for our favorite and worst commercials, and rooting for Payton's team. Our dessert was fudge brownie sundaes, which was delicious, but for some reason I kept hungering for mint chocolate chip ice cream (LOL). It probably would have been more refreshing after all the junk food we ate! Today is DH's birthday, so I'm off to quickly peruse my cookbooks and come up with a special dinner for him this evening.
