Mixing brass & copper in the kitchen - yay or nay?

last modified: 10 years ago

Hi there,

I'm just about to begin construction of my kitchen renovation and looking for your sage advice as I finalize some details. Some background - I'm doing white upper cabinets, gray lowers, and a marble-like counter top. I'm doing brushed brass for all the cabinet hardware, but I'd like to use copper for our faucet and pendant lights. Do you think this will feel odd? Should I just stick with brass throughout?

Thoughts appreciated :) thanks!

How about copper, brass and stainless? Elegant look IMHO.

I stole these pictures from Apartment Therapy. Here is the link.

I think that's totally fine! I'm doing a similar scheme in my kitchen. Agreed that you want to stick with a matte/satin brass but sounds like you're doing that. Can I ask what you have picked out for hardware? I was thinking of going with the Lewis dolin bar pull series but now not sure. And I have the delta trinsic faucet in champagne bronze.

thanks for all the feedback and the inspiration pics! You're making me feel more assured in my choices :)

And yes, was planning for the matte/satin finish for all, so all the finishes will be uniform.

cece - was thinking of the Lewis Dolin series as well or something similar - we have a lot of cabinets and doors, so the LD ones add up quickly. They're so weighty and exactly what I'm looking for though, so I'll probably try to make it happen.

For faucet, was thinking of something like this: http://www.build.com/newport-brass-1500-5103-kitchen-faucet/s821554?uid=2117474

and pendants, something like this: http://www.ylighting.com/tom-dixon-copper-shade-pendant.html or this: http://www.ylighting.com/tom-dixon-copper-shade-pendant.html

    thanks again, all! :)

Keep in mind that no matter how well sealed this copper and brass are, you're still going to have to dust them. Shiny finishes showcase dust, dirt, splashes, fingerprints and all other evils very well. I still say go matte or brushed. Too much shine knocks out the visual harmony of different metals and finishes. IMHO.

CEFreeman - Good point. You might have steered me away from those pendants! I'm definitely not the neatest.... :)

    Does this copper oxidize?

I think the faucet is great! Like CEFreeman I would be a little concerned about the pendants. I'm actually doing similar globe pendants from West Elm but the globe/light part is white - the trim around the globe is an antique brass color.

I love brass and copper together. I think it'll look beautiful and less one dimensional than using a single metal finish throughout. I really like the copper pendants too, though agree with what others have said about them being higher maintenance. But, if you love them and they're the perfect choice for your space, cleaning them more frequently probably won't be a bother.

I'm not a interior designer but I'm a metalsmith and love all metal especially copper. I would let one dominate, say the brass since it sounds like it will be the natural color and will be sealed/lacquered as brass usually is, with a lesser amount of copper in your space? Or let some copper remain copper colored and some oxidize? I don't like to seal copper since it will probably oxidize anyway and not usually in a interesting way under a sealer. I have found the sealers and waxes difficult to remove. So, be prepared to polish the copper if you want it to remain bright colored. Or let your cleaning person deal with it which is what a couple of my customers have told me they do, which kind of bugs me but also makes me laugh a little...

Love all the photos above... anything by Tom Dixon is incredible.

My experience... copper oxidizes extremely fast depending on the environment, can look ugly some times on its way to a beautiful patina. Brass is much more stable and will oxidize but is slower to do so...

The Newport Brass faucet is an excellent choice. The satin brass finish is not actually brass. It is probably zirconium applied using vapor deposition. It looks like brass, but wears like diamonds, and DOES NOT EVER tarnish.

hmm, i hadn't really considered the oxidizing factor. I'm going to try and dig around and see if I can find pics from someone who's had the pendants i'm looking at for a long time. I wonder if I'd like them as much with a more oxidized look. Will also check out the west elm pendants mentioned as well.

thanks for all the feedback! :)

As I said, I love copper and it is my business. My business partner gets annoyed at me when I tell customers that a little copper goes a long way, but I believe that. If I were designing a kitchen, I would go the direction of the second photo. Love those copper salt and pepper mills with the color of the tile. I think the mix of metals and color tile are just right...

rhoder - I'm with you on small amount make big impact. At one point, i considered using copper for all the cabinet hardware, too, but talked myself out of it in favor of brass. Do you think pendants and the faucet are too much? I was thinking that would be the right amount so there's some continuity, but not overpowering. what do you think?

I think Tom Dixon pendent is a must. Gorgeous and will probably be a key selling point if/when you sell. Faucet? Moisture accelerates oxidation on copper. An oxidized faucet would look beautiful but there would be upkeep. Sounds lovely... have fun.

Oh, and you've got to get those salt and pepper mills as well. I think I've seen them and I think they are hammered copper with brass details. Very beautiful and I believe from France. Wish I were that good.....

What did you decide about mixing the copper and brass? I am planning a kitchen renovation and was wondering how to mix them. I like your plan with mostly brass and just a few copper accents. If you wouldn't mind sharing, I would love to see pictures. Thanks!

I'd like to see pics also; you too, k8cd! We bought a copper apron-front sink for our island (white cabinets, quartz countertop, maybe Britannica gold?). My husband really wants a copper hood as well (the 2 face each other so you wouldn't see both at the same time). No uppers; maple shelves. Appliances are ge cafe matte white, with copper handles. We're painting our perimeter base cabinets aqua-green, and I'm considering brass or brushed gold for cabinet hardware. Faucet/pot filler- brass or possibly polished nickel or maybe chrome? I'd love to add a cool element and figure it has to be either the faucet, pendants, or countertop. Any suggestions are welcome. My style is eclectic.

Beth what did you end up with? I’m curious about your copper and brass blend? I’m considering the same.

My advice is to go for it, Kathy! We didn't get the brass faucet (my husband didn't like the bridge style and besides, they were way too pricey for us....) We went with "champagne bronze" which works, but honestly, I don't love it. My hope was that it would echo the brushed gold cabinet pulls. It sort of does, but a brighter color would have been better. We haven't installed the pot filler yet (still waiting on that GE Cafe range; ugh), but my husband chose copper and now I'm worried since it doesn't match the faucet. We could have gone with copper on the faucet (the fake kind) since it stays shiny and the sink has the patina, and so would match the hardware on the appliances. I may end up changing out that sink faucet. (It may be too many metals; although we don't have stainless in there, so that helps.) Either way, they all look good with the Cambria Britannica gold, and the SW pure white cabinets as well as the green cabinets. I still haven't chosen a backsplash, believe it or not.... (please ignore the cereal and junk; just visited IKEA and the grocery store!)

Sooo pretty! Thanks for the pics! I can’t even see junk. Kitchen is gorgeous. Thanks for the details and ideas. I have an open floor plan- kitchen, dining and living room. Im using mostly brass and some pewter in living and dining. In the kitchen I have stainless appliances /faucet and was planning to add in gold handles/pulls to bring gold in and blend with living /dining. I had to get the stainless cafe range instead of white but ordered the brushed bronze handles. Turns out it’s not brass/gold at all. It’s dark (bronze) and it’s adding in a whole new metal. So that made me wonder if I should exchange the bronze handles for copper (because I love it) and add that to existing stainless in the kitchen and just forget the gold in the kitchen . I’m not sure if silver/copper in kitchen is too much with gold in other spaces and I honestly think three metals in the kitchen is a crowd. 🤔🤯.

Oh I love pewter. That's my pick for a cool metal. I'd love to add it in here somewhere, maybe on the door hardware & bathroom lol.

We were sent the bronze handles on our appliances and paid extra for the copper set. Funny, the bronze totally matched the faucet. And they had a bit of copper on them, too. I actually liked them! But we still went with the all-copper. I say, do what you love. Otherwise, you will feel unsettled afterwards. Like I did with our faucet.

With stainless appliances, they say it's a "neutral" and you don't have to count it as a finish. So I wouldn't worry about that. I think the gold would add warmth. Can you share a picture, I'd love to see it all!

I love all the metallic colors, and I love it to match the stone and wood. I like very natural or elements and metallics are moving with their multidimensional just so much more interesting to look at.

They have copper sinks now and then you can use copper to accident your exhaust you can also get them your major hearts oven and my graves in that color also and I just see it looks so much better with cream instead of bright bright bright, bright bright white. I don’t like bright white, calming cream and soothing is cream off-white winter white.
