Existing oak trim with new stained kitchen cabs?

So, I am a long-time lurker... but I have looked & looked on GW to find someone in a similar situation as mine when doing our kitchen remodel and I guess I'm a little odd. We are doing a full gut (except major appliances & only refinishing the floors). I like the oak trim in my house and my husband and I are not a fan of white cabinets, we prefer stained wood. We also don't like rustic or country... we are more in line with the "transitional" style when it comes to design. So... what to do? When we did our bathroom, we ended up painting the trim on all but the window white & it looks nice, but with a kitchen that is open to the rest of the house... I think painting just the kitchen trim white, isn't possible. So - I think we need to contrast the warm oak with the cabinets, right? We are doing alder (not knotty) and so are looking at maybe a medium stain (a few shades darker than it is now)? We don't have a huge kitchen - so I'm a little scared to go dark. Does anyone have oak trim in their kitchen and differently stained cabinets? We are also removing the table & replacing with an island (4'x5') that will seat 4... so don't factor table into design (it's a hand me down - not our style). Thank you for your help!

I do! The house has oak trim -base and windows so even though we are updating the base trim we are locked in to oak. We are using prestained through Badger. When we re-did our kitchen I looked at QS oak but didn't like the door design options. We went with maple cabinets (lighter but not as light as natural) which don't have much grain. We have shoe that matches the cabinets but the oak trim up to the cabinets. It looks fine. The grains don't fight each other. We have a small kitchen too and not a lot of light so we didn't want to go too dark either. Like you we had a table area that we replaced with a peninsula. I think our kitchen was much like yours - an L with the space for the table. Previous owners loved the "country" style popular for awhile. We are more transitional too.

maries1120 do you have photos you'd be willing to share? Yes - we have an L shaped kitchen - sounds similar to yours. I too looked a QS oak but wasn't sure of it looking the way I wanted. We are going with a modified shaker (I know people don't like that term). :) This is the door style we like - but not inset & obviously not painted.

I have golden oak woodwork through the my house. This before picture is a bit blurry.

We used natural cherry cabinets for our remodel. The oak trim around the windows is washed out in the first picture below. The bit of baseboard showing behind the snowman is a better representation of the oak trim color. I think the natural cherry plays nicely with the darker grain lines in the oak.

If you are going with a slightly darker cabinet color maybe you could refinish your wood floors to their natural color (no stain). Your floors aren't all that dark but maybe if they were even lighter it would help keep your kitchen from feeling dark. I know window blinds are expensive but maybe some light woven wood shades or light fabric Roman shades would also help lighten things up.

Good luck on your kitchen remodel.

Our former home had the original wide Craftsman style moldings in fit. After we replaced the horrible laminate cabinets, we had hickory cabinets. Looked great with the fir. The dining room had fir wainscot with plate rail and built-in bookcases and columns and our furniture was quarter-sawn and rift-sawn oak. Both rooms looked great, imho. I think they would have looked horrible and really boring if everything in the house was fir. All wood in a room doesn't have to match and, imho, shouldn't. I think it will look great.

badgergal - those cabinets are gorgeous! We are going with a lighter granite and I was going to keep the floors the same color but we could easily take them lighter too. I guess I assumed if our cabinets were the same "shade" as our oak trim (but a different wood) it would look like we unsuccessfully were trying to match woods. We didn't purchase the wood blinds - they came with the house - but yes, an investment if we replaced them. It is a lot of wood though, so definitely something we have discussed.
funkycamper - I guess I just don't see a lot of mixed natural wood in photos so it's hard to picture. Of course our furniture is all different woods throughout our home & it's next to our oak trim, wainscoating & built-ins in our family room, etc. & it looks nice. Just so hard to pull the trigger when I can't visualize the end result!

Gwndill - I would be happy to take pics for you but don't know how to post them. Are there instructions somewhere?

When you go to type a comment, do you see the "photo" icon that pops up below your text? If you click that, you can browse to where your photo is stored & add it. That's the simplest way. Thanks!

badgergal - thanks for the additional photo. I can see that your cabinets are a tad darker than your trim - enough to where it doesn't look like you were "matching" them. We are having a mock-up done of a door with & without glaze based on some smaller samples we took home - I will definitely keep everyone updated as we move along. I am constantly second-guessing myself on this!

Trying this but on an ipad so hope it works.

Sorry it looked like it was going to work. I can try from a computer tomorrow.

Here is the phot but not sure why it flipped. Sorry about that. I hope this is good enough for you to see the oak trim against the maple cabinets. And thank you for teaching me how to post a picture. Too bad it didn't work from my ipad - I live on that.

Here is the penisula we did where a round table was. There was a half wall between the kitchen and dining room that we took down. Sorry for the side pics! What is the secret to not having them rotate?

And the whole kitchen but upside down! I am so sorry!

With my ipad sometimes pictures rotate depending on how I held the tablet when taking the picture. You can go into your camera roll, find the picture, tap "Edit", the. "rotate" to turn it the way it will work when you post it. I hope this works, I'm still learning after 2 years with this ipad. I really should take a class...

I like that last one, reminds me of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's upside-down house :)

This were from a computer and the pictures were facing the right direction when I selected them. I sent them from my phone to save to the computer since I couldn't get them to attach from my ipad last night. I need a class too!!!! :(

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for your comments & photos. We finished our kitchen remodel late spring but finally got the pro photos taken & posted. I love how the "golden oak" trim pairs with the new alder cabinets & I really appreciated everyone here who helped me feel more comfortable with our decision. If you are interested - I'm including a link to the "after" photos for our remodel that our contractor took. Again - thanks for your help!

Your cabinets are gorgeous as is the whole kitchen. All your careful consideration has really paid off. Please share the details. How wide are the cabinets adjacent to your range? I am almost ready to put in my kitchen cabinet order but still analyzing cabinet measurements. Thanks

Beautiful! The wood tones are so warm, inviting and rich. The cabinet color is perfect. Love your countertops and backsplash too. You must be so thrilled with your new kitchen.

I'm sorry! I posted & then forgot to check for replies. Houzz emails go to my "others" folder. Oops! To happy2b…gw, It's probably too late but the width of the cabinets on either side of the range is 32". The cabinet are alder with a "special walnut" stain & I believe a "Vandyke Brown" glaze - although there was question on whether the glaze was skipped. The countertops are granite - Typhoon Bordeaux. We went with a silgranit sink in truffle. Also - I love my faucet - The Simplice by Kohler.

I had so much fun (and stress) picking out all the facets of the kitchen remodel!

artemis_ma - I love my pet feeding station too! :)

nancyjwb - Howdy neighbor! ;) We were thinking of doing shaker but thankfully our contractor suggested we do more detail & we fell in love with the cabinet style we selected. VERY glad he shifted us away from the straight shaker. We did shaker in our bathroom remodel but I think the detail it adds a little extra style to the kitchen.

badgergal - Thank you! Nice get get positive feedback on something you put so much thought & effort into. I spend a lot more time just "hanging out" in my kitchen than I used to! :)
