Most of my tree Aloes are blooming now so thought I'd share a video on Youtube... Tree Aloes Blooming In Southern California.

rosemariero, thanks! Hopefully you'll be able to easily find Aloe africana! If not then you're welcome to drive up and pull weeds for africana seeds... j/k (kinda). So you're a big fan of how I pronounce Kalanchoe? :P Well... I do have a ton of Kalanchoes... many of which are blooming right now. So maybe I'll make another video but this time featuring nothing but Kalanchoes. I might end up awesomely pronouncing "Kalanchoe" around 20 times! I think my favorite is Kalanchoe uniflora.

hoovb! I planted it in 2010. It was in a 15 gallon pot from Rancho Soledad. In my blog entry for this video... I linked to my other blog entry about Hercules (with before and after photos). Towards the end of that blog entry I included this link to your blog. Your collection of tree Aloes is better than mine! Have you already made a tree Aloe video that I don't know about? If so, then please share the link! If not, then you should make one! The way I rationalized it was... that maybe even a bad video of my tree Aloes is better than no video.

Just saw the photo of the mockingbird perched on your Hercules. Around three years ago some mockingbirds actually built a nest in my Hercules. Then they would dive bomb anybody who got even close to Hercules. Hercules grew so fast though that the nest fell out when the leaves it was built on fell off. Well... the baby birds had already flown the coop so I suppose Hercules didn't grow that fast. But then the next year the mockingbirds rebuilt the nest in Hercules. It's still there but empty now. I wish that I had pointed it out in the video.

You did a GREAT job narrating! I would've killed it trying. :P Wonderful collection of Aloe you have! I think I know have to find an Aloe africana! :D Thanks for the show!! Only additional comment would be pronunciation of Kalanchoe...is kal-un-KOH-ee. :D

My big 'Hercules' just started branching last summer. I think it might be as tall as yours but the first fork will be much higher up on the trunk. I wonder why the difference? What makes them decide to branch? I thought it might bloom because it was branching, but no sign of that. It's branched into 4 or 5 stems. I can't tell yet as it is too high up to see what it is doing.

I would like A. vaombe also, and eventually an A. africana. You are right it has a great flower. The flowers are like ski-jumps. Your vaombe in bloom--quite a striking flower, very red. My dichotoma got to 5' tall then fell over. Broke my heart, have not tried another since. I do not like the video capability of my camera, so I never make videos. It has a proprietary format that is a PITA.

I'm really not sure why they decide to branch when they do! It's either nature or nurture... right? That's really too bad to hear about your dichotoma! :( When I planted my dichotoma and Hercules I dug the holes extra deep and hide and then shoveled in lots of 3/4" rocks before putting the Aloes in. Not sure if it has helped but I wanted to err on the side of too much drainage.
