Peach Tree Just Planted. Questions and Comments on Peach Tree Growing

By my grandfather's peach tree was this small tree as pictured. I just transplanted the tree to the most reasonable spot I could find, just wanted to know if there's anything else I should be doing. How many years do you think this tree is? What year do you think it will make at least one flower? Any comments or suggestions will be appriciated.

Thanks

Lou

If you are in a region that experiences freezing temperatures in the winter I would move this tree ASAP, actually I would move it regardless, this is a poor spot.

The thermal effects due to its proximity to the masonry wall may cause a persistent freeze thaw cycle which will severely affect the tree for the worse.

Yep, it does depend on the zone - growing against a west or south facing wall would be an ideal spot in the mild and temperate UK but with less stable temperature cycles, growing against masonry can exaggerate existing conditions...

    So where are you?

if that spot is the best you can do.. you are going to have trouble ... based on what they said above ...

is this a known cultivar... or just a pit sown tree ... ??? .. fruit from pits may or may not end up being a quality fruit tree ...

i might think it is a 2 or 3 year old tree ... if you can get it to live another 5 or 7 years... you might get a flower ... and if there is anything around to pollinate it.. you might get a fruit ...

I am a backyard grower of peach trees with about 10-years experience. So I don't have many trees; and I lose them due to winter with regularity. This is too close to the wall. It appears to be coming into its second year.

It should be in full sun. If it were transplanted, probably at least one or two years until fruiting.

I agree with the comment above that if grown from a pit, it may or may not produce.

I have 3 peach trees. Contender which came grafted from a nursery, and two Indian Freestone peach trees. All 3 of my trees, I think are in their 4th year, this year. I had one peach last year -- just one on Contender.

Here is a photo of one of the Indian Freestone trees from April 20. I grew the Indian Freestone trees from pits. By reputation they reproduce reliably, by seed. There is supposed to be enough genetic diversity that 2 such trees planted from seed near each other will cross-pollinate . . . Indian Free is one of the few peaches that requires a pollinator.

The next one is Contender. The tree is more substantial as it was already grafted tree from a nursery planted in same year, but its flowers are not nearly as pretty. The fruit is good, though.

I didn't see any honeybees this year. I see some fruit on the trees today less than the size of a pea, but some of the Indian Freestone buds are just dropping. I expect to get some fruit, just not nearly as many are setting as there were flowers. Less culling, but I'd rather cull fruit that are too plentiful than have sparse fruit.
