My $149 ESale Runners

I have been looking for runners for our library stairs and Holley off and on for about a year. I don't really need anything there but I've had an "orphan" runner from another house on the hall floor. We use it to wipe feet on when we come in the door at the end of that hall ( it's the quickest way to the trash bins, which are about 20 yards from the house). But about a year ago two of our three dogs began having trouble getting up the stairs. One has arthritis and the other has articulation problems in his forelegs, so we needed a runner for them.

I found a gorgeous Turkish runner in Atlanta in an outlandish 16 ft length that would have been perfect for that hall. But it was really costly, and the colors were very light, a pale yellow with a center coral motif. My idea was to start at one end and upholster it down the stairs, leaving the free end just running down the hall. But I knew I would cringe every time I saw someone wiping their feet on that rug, so Sunday night I returned to the site Aktillery recommended and spent a couple of hours slogging through pictures. I found a pattern and color I thought might do and ordered two in ten foot lengthst $149 each. They are polypropylene, something I would never have considered without a recommendation. The order arrived last night and the installation guys are coming next week. I have no qualms about cutting up an inexpensive rug for the stairs, and it goes well with the library rug. It feels great on bare feet and best of all, I won't worry about it getting dirty from dogs or outside shoes!

i laid one over the existing runner, which is peeking out in some photos:

This floor is orangey heart pine, which is on these stairs and hall as well as our two bug staircases. I plan to keep the stairs in pine but pave the hall in brick so we don't he two different woods (library and rest of the house is white oak).

Below, Looking from the library out to the hall:

You can see the difference between the white oak library floor and the heart pine hallway, hence my eventual plan is to redo the hall floor in brick. These rugs ---any rugs----will look better on brick than orange wood!

I am so intrigued by this, kswl. It's a very nice looking rug and the price point is crazy good, especially for the type of use you know it will get. You mentioned that it feels good on bare feet which is great. My experience with polypropylene is limited to water ski tow ropes and wonder if the rug has the same slick feel? I'm having trouble wrapping my head around that material for a rug - it's fabulous for your application and I'd put it by a door in a heartbeat but what about other rooms - does it feel nice enough for a bedroom or office?

That's a very pretty rug and it looks great in that spot. I have several polypropylene area rugs and I am amazed at how attractive they are. The one in my foyer is now 10 years old and it still looks brand new. I was hesitant at first but our garage opens off the foyer and it gets heavy traffic. These rugs don't shed, they're easy to vacuum, don't stain and they blend well with the real Persians in the living and dining rooms. I've also replaced the wool runners in the hall and kitchen with poly rugs.

And to answer DLM's question - they are soft underfoot, they don't feel slick at all. If you stop at z big box store you can check them out.

Will you use a rug pad?

DLM, everything you've said is exactly what I thought. In addition, the 11 x 14 rug in our library is a very good rug, handed down to me from my mother. (It was in the library of my childhood home.). I didn't want to put anything cheap or puny-looking next to it and was worried about how these would look. They aren't heirloom rugs, obviously, they are pretty thin and it remains to be seen how they will wear, but they actually look great! I would put them anywhere, with the caveat they they are too thin to look like a true oriental rug. As a placeholder they are wonderful. At best they will serve our purpose for years, and at worst they will buy me time to find something perfect that isn't too light a color scheme. Also, when we get brick down that dust will cut into the rugs so we may end up with another polypropylene one.

Marie Cate, our runners will be upholstered on thin rubber padding that is a continuous sheet, not the fused bits you often see in padding. It's the same thing that was used under our basement stair runners and I love the way it feels. They are bringing a piece big enough for the one that will sit on the floor at the end of the stairs, too.

That rug looks great! Brick would look really pretty as the flooring under it.

I am coming around about wool vs poly in high traffic areas. I have a bright yellow wool runner in my entry and have everyone wiping their feet on it! And apparently not wiping on the exterior rug. It's like people want to make sure I see them wiping...;)

The new rug for my LR will be a poly (I like the style) as the current wool is moving to the new guest room. While I LOVE wool and I know it does wear well; it is more touchy to spot clean than the poly. I bought most of my rugs from esales (returned three) and recommend them as they are fairly priced and have a 30 day return with free shipping, which makes the process simple. My local rug sources are quite skimpy.

    they look very nice!!

i bet you've seen and felt them dlm and just didn't realize it- they're everywhere! there are different qualities of polypro too, we have a couple that are not as dense but i have been super happy with all our polypro runners and rugs- feel great on barefeet, vacuum up great, the dense ones are almost impervious to liquid it seems, and they are all so easy to spot clean!

Not only do they look beautiful on the stairs, but what a wonderful 'Dog Mom' to do this for your pups. I also spent some time looking at the Esale site and see that the 50% off sale is still on. Knowing that, I may head back there again soon! eSaleRug site

I'm another poly rug fan, have one in my office and another in the kitchen. I'm replacing the one in my kitchen after nine years and several washings, although it's actually still in quite good shape. Your runner looks lovely, with quite a classy look.

I also have one of their runners in my kitchen. It is super durable.

    Yours look great!!!

Ok you have all convinced me - just wish I was at a place where it made sense to order for our house but I'm thinking we might need a roof, windows and actual rooms first ;-) At least I can save pics of the ones I really love and dream! Atkillery I love that one in your kitchen.

Thanks dlm! We just built our house and I was making so many decisions. I know how hard it is to wait to decorate!

Wow, what a great idea! Also, thinking about a kitchen runner.

Those really look great, and I love the colors. While I love my wool rugs, I have become a fan of the polypro rugs in the right spots.

We bought a solid color poly rug at a big box store for the study/man cave a little over a year ago and have been very pleased. Our sweet dog follows DH in there when he goes in to work or watch TV. He has his bed there but I wanted something that was easy to clean just in case. I'm going back to esale to look for a couple of 2x3's for some entry doorways.

aktillery did you add the fringe? None of the ones I'm seeing have it and that adds a nice bit of authenticity.

Great choice! I don't have polypropylene anywhere, but looking at the pics, I'm going to look at some indoor/outdoor ones for our back patio. Glad it worked for your space.

    Like the runners. Well done.

    They look perfect!

Very nice. We are going to need some runners in our new build and I've been concerned about ordering from such sites, but from your success. I think I am willing to take a leap (unless I can talk my mom out of some of hers when she makes a move at the same time).

DLM, no it came that way. I tried to find the same runner that I have but I think they must be sold out. Here is another one that is similar and only 69! I am not sure that mine is the same exact length.

great find! I will keep them in mind when we are ready to get rugs for our beach house.

ooohhhh aktillery I love that one!!!

mojomom, that's where I have gotten my nicest rugs, from my mom when she downsized from the family home to a condominium.

    Very nice !

What a great idea to use them together & place on the stairs also!

I ordered some rugs from there also. I was pleased with the speedy delivery & packaging.

I have the one posted above & another runner in the kitchen. Dogs, kids & country living call for inexpensive no-fuss rugs in this house!

Beautiful kitchens, ladies, and the rugs really warm them up and make them look even greater.
