Arabicum and Thai Socotranum are one of the same. Thai Soco is an Arabicum hybrid and only a TS if when older shows the traits required for it to be a true TS.

Buy the seeds and grow them...that would be the easiest. You could buy seeds from Adenium ko or orient adenium (face book) or adeniumseeds.com. Then you could experiment with them all you want. As Rick wrote above. Thai socotranums, RCN,PBN, black pearl and black giant, are all arabicums with different charachteristics selectively bred by thai breeders

Siam Adenium said they crossed soco and arabicums and they were new and improved for bonsai base. I don't think there are any seeds out there,

I think the RCN and PRN are human initials, I will look those up at the links, I know I will have to build the bases before I graft my obesum rosey. This will give my branches time to grow and thicken. Thanks.

I am trying to Bonsai my plants. I have read way to much for my brain to absorb let alone translate. My Obesum plants will be here soon. So I may be ahead on myself. I am frustrated. I don't want 20 plants to work on at this point to obtain the look below.

So I have a very dumb question. Below are to forms I like. In the pictures I am not sure if what I see is the caudex or twisted roots mostly.? The second pic has roots stretched out do all roots get thick like that they spread out. So is this plant older. To aim for these forms what pot do I use when my plants arrive, Do I need to do a graft of a new base to obtain this look? Can you cut the top of the caudex then graft branches? I realize that these are two different strains. Do I need to do an artificial bonsai to obtain these shapes?

Marcia Hi, I don't know which place you are from but I would request you to please go through the many threads posted in this forum before trying out stuff. Adeniums are particularly finicky plants and very slow to grow. Unless the weather conditions in your area are right plants might just end dead and you may end up wasting a lot of money.

Do go through the old adenium pages and study them carefully before your experimentation because the plant still has to grow even after the grafting and getting them to do that takes a huge effort.

The first photo is one of an 'obesum' of a very kind woman that allowed here photo of this beautiful tree to be used on this forum. It would be one that she has had for many years. The multitude of roots on the bottome 2/3 rds of tree would be roots, now called it's 'caudex' as they are exposed.

This same process is true with the second photo. This being a Arabicum/TS with what could be natural root form, but very possible with what they call 'Decorated Roots". To achieve this, when you they would cut off the entire lower portion of the tree, treat it, repot to have roots form all the way around the lower edges of the caudex. Then once the roots are large enough, they then remove roots selectively in a manner to create a balance between roots and branching.

This I have not tried and could not venture to explain to anyone.

That explains a lot now it's clear.

It is going to mean I get to play around with the roots. I have seen what are all roots from many Large too big. It helps now that you said it becomes the caudex., Rather then the original more natural thick caudex.

when making the roots more exposed I bet it takes a lot longer to then work on grafting the flower stems. For a more total designed plant. It is like starting over with what you have. Sounds fun

Does anyone know how long it takes on average to get the plants to start looking like the above at least a little. I know those above are several years old.

Also do they cut from the top of the caudex to shorten it and then graft the branches. like they cut from the bottom for more roots. How short can you go?
