Mothballs break down pretty quickly on exposure to air and water. I wash blankets in my bathtub. I'd wash or rinse in warm water in the bath tub, hang to dry. I'd also recommend airing them outside for several days (take in at night or during rain). While the odor may be obnoxious, the real issue is that mothball gasses can cause a form of anemia. You want to get rid of it before you put them on your bed and if the smell is heavy, you want to air them outside or in a well-ventilated room. There are three things that kill clothes moths: paradichlorobenzine, napthalene (moth balls are made out of either of these two) and red cedar oil. Other natural "solutions", like lavender, might "repel" moths, but won't prevent the eggs from hatching and the larvae from munching away if you've already got them (I learned that the hard way). The eggs can survive a very long time until conditions are right to hatch and the adult moths have no mouths, they eat for months on end as larvae. So, it should not come as any surprise that I recommend using red cedar for moth repellant, not moth balls or any other herbal repellants.

I have seen all the above, and they are beautiful but with the exception of the Priscilla they are all more ornate than I am looking for. I believe that the Priscilla is an uttermost, that doesn't come in a gold tone.

Cheryl Biermann, it sounds as though space is at a premium at your son's home, and even if he did sacrifice the linen closet, he would simply be making the space more comfortable, even without adding walls to make a water closet. Adding the walls would make it cramped again. Also, where do the contents of the linen closet go? I have learned through my renovations and drawings that sometimes a house is just not meant to have some upgrades. Upgrading my kitchen to one with a huge island with a cooktop and seating for our extended family means no room for a dining table in our house. We don't mind this, but it is one more oddity to explain when we sell.
