Went from Brown Knotty Alder kitchen cabinets to White

starlingreid

We decided to update our kitchen by changing the dark knotty alder wood to a smooth creamy white finish. We had the knots and cracks in the wood filled and sanded and then primed and painted the cabinets in SW Creamy. The kitchen was pretty before but too dark and rustic for our taste. The new kitchen is much cleaner and brighter.

Looks really good. I especially like that you kept some of the knotty wood in the island. My only suggestion would be to switch out the red rugs.

Thank you for the comments. Steph, I have already ordered several rugs that are more muted. I agree those rugs need to go!

What kind of product you use for white paint ? looks so smooth and all the knots are gone. Hard to separate from painted cabinet and knotty alder.

ak_catchme, the painters used a wood filler ( I believe made by Bondo) first, then sanded down all the knots, then painted with a satin Sherwin Williams paint.

Beautiful. I like that the island is a different color. Me personally, I would also paint the crown molding, maybe even beef it up a bit, and the pantry door, ceiling trim all white. Or even remove the ceiling trim.

I agree with rona magee_waguespack about the crown molding. What is going into that dark room that looks to be the old cabinets still? If it's a pantry then I would recommend a pantry door. I'm also leaning towards the door on the left being painted white, but these are all just my opinions. If you love your kitchen as is that's all that matters.

I love the look of white cabinets mixed with the wood. Glad you kept the molding & pantry door original!

Although I don't really like the knotty pine look, it was still a heck of a lot better then white. Anything is better than cheap white. Notice how they kept the island to make the cheap dull looking white cabinets interesting.

Gorgeous, thoughtful remodel. Thank you for not ripping out the cabinets and throwing them in the dumpster, then installing new white cabinets.
