It will look cheap and temporary, which it is.

What you need is hardware for "multi-pass doors" and someone who knows how to install it. You can buy the panels individually at Home Depot or better sources.

Curtains would be nice if well designed but probably more expensive unless the sliding panels were paneled, translucent or had a nice veneer. Nothing could be less attractive than flush luan mahogany sliding doors.

Just wondering if you can do a pair of doors similar to those on an armoire I have. The solid doors are hinged top and bottom to close over the opening, then can slide back along the inside of the armoire along plastic 'guides'.

Another idea: We have a woven-wood product instead of drapes at our Maui condo. They are attached at the top to run along a rail like draperies.. They stack to nothing. The have magnetic closures where the pair meet. (You could do one-way.) I remember seeing a similar product used as a closet doors in motels in the 1950's. These are easily vacuumed and can be wiped clean.

If the curtains are heavy and perfectly ironed flat, it could look ok. But, I think it's easy to miss the mark, so choose wisely.

I had my bifold doors replaced with pre-hung hinged doors. They were expensive and custom (5 panel shaker, single doors built to fit a smaller opening), but they changed everything since they were in my living area. I probably wouldn't do it in a closet because of the expense.

Another option is barn doors, but again that may be overkill.

Curtains can be quite swanky if done exactly right. I have curtains over a closet in a kid's room, which is cute but not swanky. This is where the home decorating forum can help. Of course they might just tell you "hell no". :)
