Dogs Losing Their Favorite Spot - Please Help

With suggestions received here, I've decided to replace the loveseat in my LR with a leather chair & ottoman for DH. A new sofa is also on order.

My dogs' favorite spot has been the loveseat where they scope out all the front and side yard action - squirrels, wild turkeys, UPS carriers, etc. The leather chair, ottoman & new sofa will be off limits for them.

It sounds silly, but I really feel bad about it. They've never had actual dog beds. Our previous dog, a beagle, shed, so she had an llbean bed on the floor that had a cover I washed regularly. These guys have no shedding issues and no dog smell, so we've allowed them on furniture. They love looking out the windows from a perch.

I'm brainstorming and have thought of having DH build a removable wood base that would be slightly raised to put in front of the window and painted to match the trim so I could set two dog beds on it. How bad would that look?

Then I thought I might find an upholstered bench to place in front of the window for them. Maybe kilim covered, so it would be heavy enough but not as odd looking as a dog bed window seat..

I'm trying to be sensible. When it comes down to it, I care about my dogs more than my decor. But I also don't want a home that looks whack-a-doo ;)

Can any of you dog owners share how you have reconciled having dog furniture in your nicely appointed homes? Or sources for good dog beds that have held up well & are as good for the dogs' comfort as they are good looking? Thanks for any help.

Soon losing their favorite spot :(

Leather chair will replace loveseat & will come forward toward fireplace leaving room in front of windows for...something.

The bench I linked is a little wider and longer. Are you sure your pups couldn't adjust to being a little closer together?

CindyMac, I just took another look at the Grandinroad bench you linked. I'd come upon it in my searches but dismissed it because of the colors and print, which looked like roses to me & seemed to veer toward Victorian, which is not my style.

The reviewers commented that it is huge, which is a plus in my case. I do think they could snuggle together on a bench 5" longer than the one shown above.

Would appreciate feedback on whether people think this sofa style & tones would work with colors & pattern of this bench.

Lol, garryoak! Isn't that exactly what the expression on his face says when I set him on the coffee table?

Did you happen to look at any of my links? The first one is specifically for dogs and big enough for 2. They have various sizes and colors and materials. I would not hide the fact it's for the dogs, I think most people feel that way about their animals.

A wider bench with storage, that other kilim bench is too small for them. If you are going to get something for them get something they will actually use or you will just have another piece of furniture. Bench with storage

i think the floral bench looks nice with the sofa, but it won't fade into the backround if that's what you wanted... whatever you decide on, they will probably learn to love it for what it is, headrest or not! :)

I had an wild idea. What about using a toddler size day bed against the window. This one happens to be at Walmart $79 but you can find them at any store you prefer in the kids furniture section. A standard crib mattress fits. Add a couple of the same fabric pillows or in matching colors as your couch.

k9arlene, I think the pic you posted above might be the winner. DH is a capable woodworker and could do something similar. The issue is his having the time, which is why I wanted to find something I could just buy.

He did window seats at our lakehouse that can be removed f we want room to bring in an additional table when entertaining a crowd. The dogs are very comfortable on them.

In our LR, I'd like to have the option to remove the midsection so we can still set the Christmas tree in front of the windows.

I love that it would fit the style of the room and also provide some storage. I'll be losing the faux leather ottoman where I now keep my grandkids' toys. I can get a cushion cover made to coordinate with the new sofa. Far from looking whack-a-doo, I think it will showcase the windows & enhance the LR.

Window seats are a wonderful idea! How does that work though with what looks like baseboard heaters?

They need something to rest there heads on tho. They wont be happy or comfortable with no way to rest there heads.

CindyMac, you're right about having to plan around the baseboard heat. They're not shown on the pic above, but 3 end tables built into the window seats at the lake have vents for heat/AC. Will think on that...

lilsophie, while it won't be as perfect a perch as their loveseat, I think instead of a row of stacked pillows as shown in k9arlene's pic, a couple "dog designated" pillows can be leaned toward each of the raised sides on both ends of the bench that will be good support for their heads.

The only problem I foresee will be more nose smudges to clean on the windows....

Amck, you sure do have a talented hubby. No question that I'd go for a window seat! It would be a lovely feature for the room as well as a great landing pad for the pooches,

    Change of plans!

DH & I popped into the Crate & Barrel outlet on Saturday to pick up a couple serving items for Easter. Their furniture selection had just been restocked so we took a quick look.

There happened to be 2 sturdily constructed bench-height wood trunks in a stain that blends perfectly with our LR furnishings. They're on raised curved metal legs that work with our baseboard heat. The metal matches the metal on my glass coffee table frame and the nailhead trim on the new furniture we're getting. Their size was spot on for the window space. The style is simple, like my upright piano and Shaker pieces.

Eventually, we will probably take these to use at the lake and build the custom window seat. But the reality is that DH's work and travel schedule for the next couple months is going to be demanding and the likelihood of his getting to this before summer was slim. Our new LR furniture is due in 2 wks.

These were priced at nearly 1/2 retail cost, so we went for it. My plan is to have cushions made in a print fabric that pulls an accent color from the rug and coordinates with the new sofa/shade fabric. I'll make sure the dogs have comfy pillows to rest their heads ;)

I think the dark wood balances the piano on the other end of the room. The extra seating came in handy today while entertaining family. I was going to wait till the new furniture was in & the cushions were on before posting, but here they are.

Take precautions to prevent the dogs fom scratching the wood. My dog's favorite lookout place is the bay window and he has done a number on the oak window sill. I plan to redo it but haven't figured out what I want to put on top yet. You could probably get by with a blanket for now, unless you are very good at trimming dog nails.

They look like they were made for that spot! What are the chances of finding the right width, raised to accommodate your baseboard heat, right wood stain and style?! Perfect. If I were you, I'd forego the window seat. But then my DH has few DIY skills. What a happy ending to your hunt.

Looks great! I would place a folded quilt/blanket on top to prevent nail scratches and to encourage the pups to perch. So, what do the pups think?

Thank you for the positive comments. My new sofa should be arriving within the next 2 weeks. I've decided to wait till it's here before choosing upholstery fabric for the cushions I'm having made for the benches. Though I have a small swatch of the fabric and the computerized rendition of what it should look like on the frame, since the fabric is a tonal weave I want to wait to see it IRL before deciding. So the dogs won't slide around on them, we figured a way to have the cushions constructed so they can be affixed to the benches without damaging the wood tops. I'll post pics that will show that better than I can easily describe.

The pups haven't jumped up on them and I won't encourage it until the cushions are on. My grands loved sitting on them at Easter, though. The lids have child-safe soft closures, so no worries about them getting cozy throws out of one or their board games and coloring books out of the other. They really were lucky finds.

I'm trying to sell DH on the idea of moving the old loveseat to the dog's room downstairs. We'd have to move the elliptical machine into the basement mudroom to make space, but I think they'd love it ;)

Just wanted to close the loop. My new furniture arrived several weeks ago and my window bench cushions came home today. There's so much light this afternoon I'm having a hard time getting a good representation of color in my phone pic, but this will give you the idea. I am really pleased with the outcome!

Looks good! I like the window-seat.

More importantly, how are the puppies handling the change? Do they have a new hang-out place?

The new furniture and arrangement looks great! The benches look built in and the perfect spot for the dogs! Hopefully they will warm up to it. Our dog (pug) loves sitting on top of the love seat and looking out the window and will even curl up and sleep on top of the love seat.

I couldn't believe some of the amazing furniture for dogs. Angus will lay in his beds but usually prefers the furniture.

I think as long as it's comfortable, the dogs will happily switch over to whatever you put next to the window. Maybe they will see it as an upgrade. It's important to pets to be able to monitor the territory. For wild animals it's a survival skill and so pets need to do this for peace of mind.

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm adding a pic that shows a swatch of the cushion fabric with an accent pillow on my rug. The tweed fabric ties in the rusts and golds. Unfortunately, the sheen on the cloth seems to turn it to more of a coral & tangerine in my pics. It is more subdued IRL, but they do add a color punch that works all 4 seasons.

Confession - My dogs haven't been on them yet. As some here predicted, they found other good spots to scout outdoors when the furniture got changed out. Puck does his lookout from the sofa in the upstairs TV room and Riley hangs with me & watches birds & squirrels on the back deck. If they jump up on the new cushions I'll let them. But if they don't seem interested I probably won't encourage it. The window benches have already proved their worth, even without the cushions. My DS made a surprise visit home when he was in the U.S. on business and we had a big family dinner. The fruit trees and lilac bushes were in bloom and people loved perching on the benches by the open windows to catch the scents.

For Lyban, the dogs are brother/sister littermate mini labradoodles. Turning 12 this year but still acting like pups!

And, they did end up keeping their favorite loveseat! I convinced DH to move it in to their finished basement "dog room" (which is also DH's exercise room). We had to remove a cabinet to make it fit so DH had to rewire the TV & mount it to the wall. All's well that ends well ;)
