DIY Hexagon or Penny Tile Floor Patterns: Have you tried it!?

Hi all,

I'm seriously jonesing for a patterned floor and encaustic tiles are not in the budget...I've seen people buying different colors of penny or hexagon tiles and just popping the tiles off of the mesh backing and replacing with color to create the pattern...I'm sure this is time consuming but I don't care about that part. Has anyone actually done this themselves and had it turn out well? In my mind I'm laying white tile out all over the floor, and then getting on my hands and knees to create the pattern, (maybe using a drop of glue on the back to stick them to the mesh) and then voila - it's ready to put down. Yes? Am I crazy? I think my husband thinks so but what does he know? :)
