A good place to start would be to sit up in bed and extend your arm out, up, and back to the wall. Where your fist is would be one good place to mount it providing the lamp arm is long enough. Another thing to look at is centering it on the night stand. Another option is just outside the bed posts and a bit higher. It is more convenient if you can reach it comfortably from a reading position without having to turn around.

Yes there are other lights in / near the kitchen. There's 12 recessed can lights in the " new" high ceiling room and that would have to light the part of the island that extends in there. Then in the kitchen there are 4 round surface LED lights that are around the regular sink and stove, one over the regular sink and 3 of the same LEDs on the other side of the island in the ceiling. Yes, there's an overhang on the island for seating/ four stools. Also, the island will have a medium sink and will primarily be used for food prep and hanging out/ informal eating. I've included the rough drawing that was sketched out by the lighting store guy giving us an idea where lights would be good. I wish there wasn't such a difference in the ceiling heights, but the bedrooms are above the kitchen. I didn't consider 2 larger lights evenly spread out.... What would be an appropriate size, and, what would be a good height? I've also included a picture looking the opposite direction towards the sink and window also. I probably have to consider the sight line to the window! I just can't see what would look good, and I appreciate everyone's opinion! Thank you!! Thank you all for your " fresh eyes"

Pendant lights with switches located next to the bed help to keep clutter off bedside surfaces. If you are doing a custom design with little to no likelihood that you will adjust the layout in the future then this can be a great option. Some bedrooms have more than one possible bed placement so if you are the type like likes to "remodel" by just changing up furniture placement or accessories from time to time then lamps are the ticket for you.

I feel like our advice on hanging wall lamps beside a bed (from our guide to light sizing) might be the most easily applicable here. That advice is to sit in the bed normally, have a buddy measure the height from the floor to just above your shoulder and then to put the light there. That being said, I have seen sconces beside window benches placed at points that, at least to my eyes, look higher than this advice. Wall lamps are an intriguing idea for lighting your reading nook because, more often than not, they are adjustable!
