Good accent colors in green kitchens with golden oak cabinets

I was hoping for a major kitchen remodel, but I think it will be 3-5 years before that happens. In the meantime, we just want to do some cosmetic changes. We currently have the golden oak cabinets and mustard yellow walls and a yellowish-cream laminate counter. Too much yellow going on! I think the paint we will go with is somewhere in the olive green family to look nice with the cabinets but maybe a touch brighter or lighter. We are also going to get new laminate counters (budget option since this is hopefully a temporary situation). The counters will be darker, somewhere in the dark brown/blackish/dark gray area unless that seems too bold with the color scheme I'm thinking of. I am waiting for samples of Wilsonart laminate. We have wainscoting on the bottom of the walls right now which will stay because the walls behind that part would need to be redone (full of adhesive/nail holes) if we go without. We want to wait and get the new drywall when we do the major remodel instead of doing that now.

One question is whether to paint the wainscoting a true white or go with cream like I currently have. My appliances are all white so I thought a whiter white might be in order this time. The other question is about choosing an accent color (not for walls, just for a touch of color here and there). I'm leaning towards purple but I know it has to be the right shade to pull it off. I have a plum color on the walls of my craft room that I just LOVE but it's very bold! It looks like purples are hard to match as far as accessories go. I'm not sure if it would look better to be a subdued purple or something like plum. I'm wondering what other color combos would look nice with the green walls and golden oak. Any pictures would be great! Even though it's just a small update I want to be happy with it. I think anything I do with be an improvement.

My other idea is not to worry about purple as an accent color but instead focus on decorations that bring in the color of the counter I choose (dark brown or towards black). So much to ponder.

I would worry that olive green with oak cabinets and dark countertops would make your kitchen very dark. Maybe you have a lot of windows? If it were my kitchen, I think I would go with a light sage and add touches of plum accessories. I think a few photos might help us help you.

I would do more of a light green like sherwin Williams sea salt, paint the wainscoting white, and pops of peacock blue.

I don't have a photo handy, but my golden oak kitchen has faux soapstone laminate counters, a faux copper tin ceiling panel backsplash, and dark pine green walls. It looks great IMO. The kitchen faces northeast and has 2 small windows. The breakfast nook has a large window, so the adjacent are is bright.

I've found, that light paint in a dark room often looks insipid and washed out. The trick to making a room feel light is to use lighting. I added track lighting and it made a huge difference. Good luck@

You need to post an image, or several of them at different times of day. We can be so much more helpful if you do. If you're not sure how to do this, consult the "new to Kitchens" thread.

I would go with a light neutral beige for the walls if you are doing a darker countertop. Make sure it's not too yellow or too orange though. That will let your accents bring color instead of focusing on the wall color or cabinet color.

Thanks for the input. Here is the current kitchen in its state of yellow ugliness. It's okay if you laugh. You can see why I want a major change in the next few years. For now, I think new paint and countertops will help get us by until then. The kitchen is on the north side of the house. The biggest windows are in the northeast corner, next to the kitchen table.

And here is the purple color I like from my craft room. I don't want it on the walls in the kitchen but would love it as an accent color if I came up with the right color scheme.

So far I'm liking the 3rd and 4th colors from the top, and perhaps the 2nd. If I had to choose today, I'd choose Leek. This is shown compared to my cabinet color for reference.

Yes, the leek is nice and would play well with purple. If it were me, I'd be tempted to go full kiwi.

My living room, next to my oak kitchen, is SW Sassy Green, which is similar to Prickly Pear, and it looks great with the oak.

There's actually not that much wall, so yes, go bold! But you probably want the green somewhere near your dining table and chairs. Could you start with a purple and green print and then get a green than matches with it?

The other green I like so far is this one on the left. It looks less yellow than the others that I liked. I'm trying to figure out if that's a good thing or not, but I do like the color against the wood.

I like it but not sure it will take purple accents as well.

Look up SW Svelte Sage. I think it would look nice.

Will you be painting the wall where the bulletin board is? and what about the eating area? and the soffit? I agree with the idea of finding an inspiration piece with your purple and green, then using that green. I also agree with the above warning about avoiding "insipid" colors. I actually think with some interesting color on the walls and decor, you could keep the countertops, unless they are damaged.

    Good luck!

Lots of good ideas here for me to ponder. All the walls in the kitchen would be painted, including by the table, which is where my biggest windows are. I came across this Newburg Green color that seems crazy but for some reason I can picture this on my walls, since the light color of the wainscoting would balance out walls painted in this color. I'd obviously not use purple accents if I did this, but this got my attention. Newburg Green Kitchen Color

Take a look at Craftsman colors. Sherwin Williams has a Craftsman line. They play well with oak.

This is Farrow and Ball Cooking Apple Green that you can paint match in other brands. It would be very nice with your wood, and is both less yellow and less saturated than the colors you're considering.

    That is a beautiful green!

We went with this color in our kitchen and adjoining family room which both have a lot of oak.

We kept our oak cabinets, replaced the counters with granite, tiled the back splash

and used a Sherwin Williams color called Rice Grain. Very light and neutral and with the slightest green undertone.

In the first photo the island color is SW 6188, Shade Grown. Maybe a lighter shade of this tone?

The green wall in the second pic is not identified.

Here is a shot in my bathroom.

Sorry for the poor quality but the wall color is behr grape leaves, you can look at the color online and it is more accurate than what is shown in my cell phone picture. I had it in my old kitchen with the same golden oak shown in the trim in this pic and I used orange and red accents.

Mabeldingeldine, I'd really love to see a picture of your kitchen with the dark green walls! I like the look of soapstone counters, so I bet it's gorgeous.

I really like that "scandinavian villa kitchen".
