Bathroom Lighting Advice needed - how many recessed lights in 5x9?

Please share your experiences.

Odd space - 5x9 bathroom - 2 small windows.

How many recessed lights I'd need so there are no shadows etc.?

Initial plan was 2 but I think it's not enough.

Options:

- one is the shower/tub area and two more - one above sink and one in the middle of the room?

- 2 pendants around mirror maybe ( very narrow area though - afraid it will be cramped ) and 2 recessed?

Thank you!

Don't do a recessed light above the sink, you will get shadows.

    - You should do a double light fixture on the wall over the sink or a sconce on each side of the sink.

    - two 4" cans over the tub.

    - fan/light combo over the toilet

    - one 4" can centered on door.

I tend to like lots of lighting and add dimmers to all of them, so I can adjust as necessary. You can always choose not to turn something on, but not much you can do if you didn't install enough lights.

Thank you for the advice. This is exactly what I'm kind of planning. The only issue is that I have a very small space between the two small windows and most likely the mirror will be small with no space for lights on both sides. I was wondering wether I should do a light above mirror or two small pendants but I feel this way would be too crowded.

Is there a particular brand for the 4'' you'd recommend specially for the tub/shower area? Thank you!

Yes, you read my mind I was thinking to check those mirrors as a second option

Sorry, don' have a brand. My contractor got them from his lighting supply store. Just make sure they are compatible with a dimmer.

One last question: Isn't one 4'' in the shower/tub area enough or I should go with two cans? Thank you!

For me, just one light in the tub/shower area seems to cause shadows, so I like to do 2 of them for more even lighting.

I also used pretty glass tile in the showers and it looks really nice when illuminated with 2 lights and dimmed just a bit. Ambiance lighting for when guests use the full bath downstairs!

Don't do ONLY a recessed light above the sink.

    That sounds so nice!

Two additional thoughts, not related to the above note:

As you plan your lighting, consider your color scheme. If you're going with today's trendy lots-of-white, maybe-some-gray color scheme, light's going to bounce off those stark whites and could feel harsh. On the other hand, if you're using a softer, darker color scheme, those darker colors will "absorb" some of the light; so you'd need to ask whether you'd need more light fixtures.

I like to read in the tub, so I definitely plan to have a light of some sort "behind me" for that purpose.
