Anyone ever done scarf painting?

Annie's thread made me want to share the scarf adventure my daughter and I went on a few weeks back. Like the canvas painting classes that are growing in popularity we have a place locally that offers scarf painting.

You start out with a white silk scarf and use fabric dye as paint. It's fail proof and doesn't matter what it looks like on the screen, the finished product is always beautiful when it's done. I did flowers and my daughter did drops of varied colors and then sprayed them with water.

We blow dried them afterwards and here's what they look like now, my daughter wore hers in her hair that night. It was really different and so fun!

Funny you should say that as I was thinking about that too. I love doing it, no two are ever a like and it's very relaxing. I even daydreamed a bit about selling some custom ones on etsy.. ha ha.. I love how the dye works the same as paint with brushes and there's different ways to manipulate the results using water. I just can't seem to find the right dyes but I'm actually going to go again with a friend sometime in the next couple of weeks, maybe I can subtly inquire.. I don't know if you can tell, but for the canvas, they just pinned the scarf to a window screen.

    Irish - they're lovely.

Dharma Trading carries paint for silks. I've never ordered from them but I seem to remember that someone on this forum recommended them years ago as a source for quality dyes. They also sell white silk scarves. There are lots of videos online showing how to do it.

That would make a great outing for a group of friends or my DD and DDIL. I'll have to check around here to see if I can find a place that offers that.

Wow, those are lovely. I want to make one!

I did a canvas painting event, which was a pleasant evening, but my end result was 'meh'. I was planning on throwing it out but my Mum saw it and said she wanted it. She hung it in her apartment. Better then making the fridge, I made the wall - take that 5 year old nephew!

Thanks for the link Maire Cate, I'll check it out, I kept getting Alibaba when I did my searches.

hhireno, a similar thing happened with my daughter a couple of years ago. After painting together at my kitchen table she tossed her project. I took it back out from the trash and the next time she came over it was (and still is) framed and hung in the hall. It's the first thing we see when we walk in the door. :c).

I love these! I especially like the one you did, Lukki! This would be an awesome thing to do with a couple of friends and a couple of bottles of wine!

Love those scarves you and your daughter made, lukki. That sounds like a fun project, and I'm going to look to see if there's anything similar available near me---thanks for posting this!

(Hireno, I had to laugh at your comment. About ten years ago I was in a play with a bunch of little kids ---I was the mother in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever----and of course afterwards the parents would all come up and tell their kids how good their performances were. When my own mother came to a performance bringing my nephews, she found me after the last curtain call and loudly proclaimed, "you were the best one in the play!" just like all the other mothers in the crowd. I was 50 and she was in her seventies, lol!)

thanks for the compliments!. I'm so glad it's sparked interest because it is sooo fun and you have something that's one of a kind and wearable when you're done.

I think they are beautiful. You did such a good job. There's a small store I went to once that sold locally done art in various forms. One was a lady who did watercolor silk scarves, they were gorgeous. They had some framed as art work on the walls. I loved that idea. I don't wear scarves but I would display them. It was beautiful art.

How to make a Mother's Day Silk Scarf

Oh my gosh! I have to do that. I know both my daughters would enjoy it and it would be a great thing to make for one of our Church Ladies Tea. Thank you so much for posting this!

I swear I don't live under a rock, but I've never heard of canvas painting or scarf painting as activities beyond what an actual artist would do. When did these become things?

MaddieLee that's a very cool article. Thank you for posting it!

The little spot we go to has about 50 colors of dye that looks like watered down paint. You pick your colors and brushes, they pour a little into a plastic cup and you paint. Actually you can see me painting in the top right hand corner of the first picture. I love to paint so I think I'm going to try to get the dyes and scarves to do here at home.

Thank you Raven, I like the penguins too!

Linelle, I'm beginning to think the scarf painting is a little local thing but canvas painting has been around for a while and if you go to your local Groupon webpage and search in art classes, you will probably find quite a few available.. There are even franchises for it now.. Typically, they pick the art the class paints but when it's done, you'll have a canvas piece you did to take home. Here's the website for one that most likely has location in your area

    Painting with a Twist

Lukki, nothing around me. For canvas painting, does everyone paint the same thing?

I just watched a Painting with a Twist video. That is so not for me. :O

With canvas painting they do, scarves no, you get to do your own thing, hence the differences between my scarf (the flowers) and my daughters (the colorful spattered one). I haven't watched the video but since I dapple with paint and like to be creative on my own I've never been to a canvas class.

    The canvas class looks terrible.

Linelle, I'm just curious, which video did you watch? I have several clients from work that have gone and loved it. My guess is that it's one of those things where the success of the events are based on the creativity and personality of the individual franchise or studio.

    Lukki, it was this one.

Maybe it's not representative of all the locations, but painting a wine glass? The leader was too perky. It was just ugh to me.

The Painting with a Twist events around here are meant to be a fun night out when groups of friends can get together and try something different. I've gone a few times, no the 'art' isn't great but we do have fun.

My women's club just did the canvas painting. It was fun, not OMG I've never had so much fun, but an enjoyable evening and I'd be willing to do it again. Maybe next time it would be a painting I'd like and want to keep! I would definitely like to try the scarf painting, in a big scarf wearer.

For the canvas, everyone does the same painting and she coaches you through it. It's so interesting to see how everyone interprets her instructions. Add in various artistic skill levels and the end results were similar but far from exactly the same.

In addition to places like our club meetings and private home parties, the artist-coach holds these events in local bars two to three nights a week. It's just a fad and she's riding the crest while she can, so good for her. She made $200 for about an hour's work with very little overhead.

The coolest canvas painting event I've seen lately is the one from where I take my dog for day care.. Everyone literally paints a picture of their own dog and I think most of the proceeds either go to an animal adoption agency the daycare sponsers or another agency they help that benefits animals in some way.
