So disappointed. Flooring discontinued so kitchen plans need to change

I'm so bummed. We planned to expand our kitchen 2 feet into the dining room by removing a dining room built in. I looked online and found several places that had our floor listed on their site. When I called them, I learned the floor was discontinued in 2012 and no luck finding it. Our entire first floor is one continuous engineered, handscraped wood floor.

We have a box in our garage left over from when it was installed in 2011. I can still expand but I planned on moving my island over to get wider aisles between sink and island. Looks like the base cabinet for island will need to stay the same size, hence no wider aisles because I don't have enough floor. I can get a larger island and a little more aisle width but not between the sink and island.

I don't know if I should even bother expanding or just sticking with current layout. I'm feeling very discouraged and hard to see how this will all play out. I'm not sure how anyone is going to match the handscraped engineered pre finished wood flooring to get the kitchen I want.

Are you taking down the wall to the dining room? Are you painting the cabinets? Or replacing them all?

The floor is nice, but it would be interesting to use another material to set the space off from the rest of the areas. Maybe have a different floor for the kitchen and nook and keep the living, dining and family rooms as is.

And it doesn't have to be tile. There are so many choices! Maybe think about...what if I wanted to make the space a little special/different? Do you have any styles you like for kitchen/nooks?

Don't get discouraged. Post a layout and photo of your area to get suggestions. Maybe there is a different way to do the layout. Maybe there is a creative way to address the flooring issue so it will look great even if it not the same. There are some very creative things done with floors including insets, painting, etc. Something similar to the tile inset in the first example might go very well with your handscraped floor.

Sometimes a very complimentary, but clearly not the same color strip of flooring will work to define the kitchen space and looks very intentional.

I'm SO sorry this has happened to you, but this is one very good reason why site-installed/finished hardwood is a better choice. Yes, sometimes matching stains can be tricky (but it can be done!) and yes, old and new wood can take stain a bit differently, but I've done this in a 1948 house years later and the results were excellent.

I hope you find a good solution - it IS discouraging!

Thank you all. I have a layout thread already so I didn't want to post again. I will link it here. Since I'm pretty much stuck with the u shape with island base cabinet sitting where it is now, I'm thinking my best bet is to expand into dining room and use the floor I have to fill in the 2 or so feet we are expanding on the island seating side. I'll have a 15 or 18 inch overhang to get my island to 42 or 48 inches. Other option is simply use tile which I would rather not do. I think it's too much hassle just to get a couple more inches on the sink to island aisle.

The entire first floor except bathroom and bedroom have the wood floor.

We are taking the built in out in dining room and giving that space to kitchen. The kitchen and dining room will be separated by a wall. I really love hardwood in kitchen. My design is centered around a wood floor. It's going to be a complete gut except for floors. Getting custom cabinets but the island base size will need to stay where it is.

That could be a great solution. Do tile under your island and extend it out another foot beyond. Then you can put your island where you want to.

I wish. Unfortunately they have to chisel it out and cannot reuse.
