How to make surround sound speakers less lame looking

OK, kid's clutter aside, how do I make the speakers for surround sound system look less choppy?

I'm bummed because my husband just replaced our TV and the old one had this nice speaker bar that ran the length of the bottom and we had the two side speakers on the ground next to the cabinet.

This one just looks lame. I hate the notion of having this small box below the TV because it makes it look unbalanced/top/heavy/whatever. (I know - TV is mounted, so it's not really a problem logically/physically. But I still believe it should look like it's stacked properly. I went to great lengths to find a console that was wider than the TV, and now I'm running out of length with this one. )

He said we can replace these for something else, but unless something comes with the TV, it's just not going to be the same size.

Should we mount the side speakers along the top edge of the TV? Maybe even put in a dummy speaker along the bottom and line up the bottom speakers to the ends?

Anyone ever paint a black rectangle around the TV, so the speakers and TV and all "square" up.

Would he consider a different speaker system? We have a Bose system similar to this one . The speakers are much less conspicuous. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_018AM6V/Bose-Acoustimass-6-Series-V-home-theater-speaker-system.html

Yes, he would consider something else. Do you have a picture of how you have this set up? I don't think small is necessarily the solution I'm looking for because it'll still be choppy.

Would getting white work better because it then "blends" in more with some of the trim around the house? Maybe I've gotten used to these for the last 10 years (or maybe I just don't pay as much attention to them because they are behind us), but I feel like these are less conspicuous.

Context of where the TV is next to the white of the fireplace.

Why can't the speakers sit on the console in the corners - right below where they are now.

Would it be an option to go through the ceiling? My husband installed these speakers and although it took some convincing (I didn't want more holes in the ceiling!), now I don't even notice them.

I just recently got a Vizio 5.1 channel surround sound system that has the front three channels built into the sound bar and then the back speakers are nicely mounted on speaker stands. wireless subwoofer. Would your DH consider that, you still get the 5.1 surround but don't need 3 separate speakers.

This is the one I got:

With our set-up, the big box (sub woofer?) is in our cabinet. The two back speakers are each in a large basket on top of the bookcases. The two front speakers are on either side of the console on slender stands. I have contemplated taking them off the stand and just sitting them on the cabinet.

Those two baskets hold the rear speakers.

    Speaker stands.

It's the wires that are making it looks messy.

    Thanks all for the posts.

Graywings, BLFenton, ellie - the wires will eventually get buried in the wall. Since we are trying things out, everything is left out right now. Can put them on the console if that aesthetically helps over mounting to the wall with cables buried, but not sure if that IS aesthetically better. Maybe, because your eyes aren't dealing with choppiness??

MizGG - in ceiling is a possibility. We just have to be sure we are set on our choice before we start making big holes.

beagles - yes, we had a nice sound bar before. Will have to do measurements, but not sure that's going to be long enough with this new TV. Then again we would have the issue of some rectangle (TV) over another rectangle (sound bar), as opposed to just one seamless rectangle.

lilychen, you can actually buy a little thing that clips onto your TV stand and attaches the sound bar to the bottom of the TV so it effectively turns it into one piece. I boughtthis one

Here is mine w/ my 70 inch tv.

I would buy longer, sleeker speakers for the sides and move the speakers closer to the TV so it looks like it is one unit. I would also mount the center speakers instead of having it sit on the console. This example doesnt have the centere speaker but shows how close the side speakers should be imo so it looks cohesive.

How about something like the Mythos from Definitive Technology. Another option is the in wall speakers that are not intrusive. I just used Definitive technology as an example. I do own their products and like them.

    Good luck!

Beagles - I think we had that before as well. TV was smaller though so it fit the length perfectly. I think our TV is also a 70" - the true measurements are 37 1/2" x 65 13/16". Yours looks nicer than I think ours would (being unevenly matched in width) because you have the cabinet to define the boundaries, plus the shadows help.

I will have to look around for side speakers like RoseAbbey has - if they match the height, I could definitely accept that.

Homepro, thanks for the link. Those would be OK, again, ideally if it's the right length.

lily, that is not my room, I just copied that picture from on line to give you a visual of what I was trying to say. My speakers sit inside a wall unit.

OK, so here's what I was thinking of with painting the wall. This is just black scrapbook paper taped up and I ran out, so this is as much as I could cover. But assuming the side speakers (whichever we get - these or something slimmer like in roseabbey's picture) are moved in closer, so that from a side view, they don't extend out of the painted part, and extend down to the floor and line up with the console (side speakers would definitely have to be moved in because they extend past the console now, and I'm not buying a new console!)...

    Thoughts?

I dont care for the black painted wall, looks like a big square hole in your wall.

I won't do the black painted wall either!

My husband had control over our rec room in the new house and he installed flush mount speakers that look like this:

Harris Living Room · More Info

Three story livingroom · More Info

I am not sure how to decorate around them at the moment, but I guess they are a little less conspicuous than the speakers coming out of the wall! So that's an option. ( I feel like I could put a wrapped canvas print over them and the sound wouldn't be that affected but that quickly got shut down! hahaha!)

Our walls are tan, but I do think white would be less obtrusive, as the pics of our current back wall show. However, he said these dont come in white. So do we just bury the black in the wall and put a white cover over them? and how about the horizontal bar at the bottom? I'm sure that would have to cut through several studs.

I haven't read any replies, but I would take them off the wall in put them in baskets ( two matching ) on either ends of the table below.

My house has hard wired speakers in different locations of my 18" x 29" living room and they are all in baskets that blend with the decor. The sound is awesome.

Here is a video that explains positioning of the wall speakers as it relates to the studs! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rpz-VzJ_AAs
