How do you arrange & display succulent collection?

last modified: 9 years ago

I am just curious how everyone here on this forum arranges and displays their succulents. I am in need of ideas and inspiration.

If you could provide pictures that would be awesome!

Thanks!

Melissa

Mine are potted in a rocked area of my yard

In my experience, you jam them on windowsills wherever they will fit......probably not the answer you were looking for!

    LOL....Breton!

Mine are kept outside year 'round, most of them in pots. I like groupings, also like getting them off the ground in an effort to keep earwigs and roly-polies out.

Great idea for a thread! I need some inspiration too.

Shapiro, nice collection there! You have quite a few.

lgteacher, colorful display, interesting collection of pots. I especially like the can. Enjoyed your blog. If you ever get to Pasadena, be sure to check out the California Cactus Center.

Wow - love the little pots!!! And thanks, Socks -- that's only half of my garden - the other half is on the other side of my house with a palm tree, so ones who need shade or shelter go there. (Aeonium and my cuttings all start out there.) This is a great thread - I love your variety of pots, and should probably make more groupings too. I'll be moving mine all into my backyard for a whilebut when I put them all back, back, I'll play with different groupings.

Socks - clever idea to put the pots on other upside down pots. I am going to do that with a few of my larger plants.

lgteacher - I love that plant stand you have! Where did you get it?

Melissa, I don't know if you already watch these 2 women, but I find them inspiring. When you have time go onto YouTube and look up Debra lee Baldwin and Laura Eubanks. I love watching their videos when I need some inspiration:)

Will you be growing indoors or outdoors?

These pix are several yrs. old now, but show some different setups I use.

This is next to & over the kitchen table. Metal veggie bins bought at the hardware store. Especially good for trailers like Hoyas.

Mostly Hoyas above the kitchen table & just right of pic above. It's perpendicular to a west window w/ strong sunlight.

In that spirit of fit them in where you can, the kitchen table (formerly), it's now the quilting & sewing machine table).

Interesting side note (IMO): that Sans. pictured is 6 yrs. old grown from single leaf, grows in Leca stones & water, it's never been in soil, ever.

To me, it's where the plants get good light & work best for me (like maybe if I need it in plain sight to remember it or not).

I really enjoy seeing how others are arranging their succulents!

My grow area is fairly plainly organised, but I try to make up for it in terms of variety/colour/plant form.

Here is one portion of my plants. =)

Kara, thank you for mentioning youtube and the two women who post helpful videos. I just beheaded an echeveria, and Debra had a video about how to do that. I had no idea that if the head rests a couple weeks, roots will sprout. I learned some other things as well.Very helpful video.

Thanks to everyone for posting their displays. Very interesting collections.

It has been mentioned here many, many times how to behead and what to do and what to expect. I know it isn't easy to find specific posts here...

I like to repurpose things I already have into planters...

Rina, no it isn't always easy to search and find what you want here. But I did start a thread about my long-necked plant, and "Russ" was kind enough to guide me.

Yes, having a link to specific video and/or article is much better. Visual is always great. Too bad that search function here is not better.

    Nice collections everybody!

    Postpunkgirl,

Interesting array, but I think I see trouble. On the top shelf, the cactus w/ the turquoise mix under it. Those 2 appear to be falling over which suggest their bases are rotting. Do you see where I mean? On top of the shopping cart.

Also, the glass cups candle holders of sedums, did you drill holes in them?

Please forgive the off-topic post, and apologies to the OP; Someone mentioned that the 'search function' is poor here. Sadly, I agree. on that matter, I have to ask: When I bookmark a thread, I get a box telling me that "You can see all your bookmarks in 'Your Houzz'." Damned if I can.... Where do I find my bookmarks?

Again, apologies for the off-topic question.

On-topic? I actually distribute my succulents round the house on available windowsills. We live in an upstairs apartment, in the UK, and taking them outside for the summer months is impractical and awkward. The garden is 'open-plan',(there is no division between our 'plot' and that of our neighbour) and faces East-West, but with surrounding housing, fencing and trees, the sun is actually a welcome luxury...

In 'Your Houzz', click on 'Bookmarks'.

Yes, thanks. As I stated above, I don't see it. I click on 'Your Houzz' and there is no such option.

    This is what I have:

Do you not have these options below your picture?

Ah, right. Found it. Thank you.

I have to say therefore that, the direction which appears when you bookmark a thread is somewhat vague. I failed to realise you actually had to access your account to see them. It really doesn't clarify that very well.

    Thank you for the tip.

Also, I'm relatively new to the site as a member; I haven't really found my way around it yet, so am still learning the ropes.

No problem - we've all fumbled our way through this site. And still are learning new things.

AND we got no smiley faces - !

    Back to topic:

I used to keep quite a lot of cacti too, but with young children and an inquisitive dog, I decided to suspend that side of my hobby.... then I never got back into them, and now I'm just happy with the plants I have, and my expansive garden....

off topic again, but if I can give you another suggestion, it is quite helpful to put your general location by your name. I know you mentioned that you live in UK, but I only remember since reading recent posts by you and will for sure forget. It isn't possible to remember everyone's location, with so many ppl coming and going. It is good to know without asking when looking for some advice - not for all, but many questions are easier to answer.

    last modified: 9 years ago

Hello rina, yes I'd like to add that. Is there a specific 'location' box to contribute to in the profile, or do I just edit my name box? ( took the uninformed decision to post those details in my 'surname' box....)

ETA: Then I found how to do it under 'advanced settings'... Oh we live and learn, huh??

(Is there a PM system, to send other members messages, at all...?)

Alexandra, if you go to your page and edit your profile, you will see an 'advanced settings' link on the left. Follow this link. Near the bottom is a privacy setting where you can let others send you a message. It will look like this -

I can't see this on my own page, so I borrowed it from Rina's page. (Thanks, Rina!)

You are making me look brilliant and tech savvy! LOL Actually, we all had a dickens of a time learning this new set up, especially us old-er geezers who don't do twitter or facebook and didn't know what 'following' entailed. OK, maybe that was just me! LOL

Isn't there a Moderator team on the forum? We should have a forum for general site questions, like this one.... Unless I'm missing something obvious! (Thanks for the PM tip, by the way!)

The poor OP has had her thread well and truly thread-jacked by me, for which I cannot apologise enough....!

    last modified: 9 years ago

Alexandra, you did just great, that's what I meant.

I am one of those old(er) geezers Crenda is talking about too...

Alexandria, you are quite right! And in the spirit of the OP's original question, I went out to take some photos this morning. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly!

My sun deck. Only have one succulent, the yellow purslane, at this time. I have 2 nice planters, one in the back and one behind the railing on the right, that are 12 inches deep - and the drainage holes are at the top! Arg! Hard to keep things from drowning in the summer, so a no-go for succulents.

I've shown pictures of my island out front before. Most of those plants are PIG, but I do have a couple of 'pots.' This is the stump from a palm that died.

And these are pots I rescued from someone's garbage. LOL

And on the lanai we have 2 carts that we made from reclaimed wood from our dock. It will look much better after I prune some bushy, sprawling jades. And move some of my plants over to the carts!

The whole point of the carts was to free up the hot tub. LOL Bet that water is really green by now!

And the tops of the creosote posts from the dock repair have become plant stands.

If you want to eat outside at my house, you'll have to give me fair warning so I can clear off the tables!

And the island with the cooktop and eating area is generally filled with plants and potting mix and various other supplies. (what a mess! LOL)

And then there is the sick bay / nursery.

So yeah - I use every nook and cranny I can find, and then some!

My goodness, that's absolutely stunning - it puts my collection of plants to shame - mind you, it seems you have the most wonderful location - I'm stuck away in a little corner of the English suburbs (thank you British weather!), so any pictures I have are not going to look half as impressive! I'll get my bits together and take a picture. To say MY collection is modest by comparison, would be an understatement!

Lena... That's my cutting/baby nursery. Lol I move them once the roots are good to go. And I replaced the candle holder plants with Gollum jade and crunchy mix. I mist water them.

    Here's the new little guys...

And here are my cacti mommies:

Everything except the crassulas, which really don't like Nevada sun, is on the south facing spring deck waiting for me to move them to the north facing summer deck.Might do that today as summer is coming to Reno next week. They'll go on tables and glass shelves.

hablu, I love that your terrace is almost entirely overrun by your plants, and the garden (from the little we can see) looks absolutely bare of plants! Lovely picture!

Nice photo - different angle, great to see your garden from different angle. Your plant shed is so orderly:) And another beautiful blue pot...

May I ask what are those 2 'sticks' visible in second photo (just to the left&behind the blue pot): first I thought they are ropes of the swing - but do not see a swing?

hahahahaha!! Oh yes, totally bare!! That's amazingly impressive, harry! I would say you're definitely a keen gardener! Thank you for the different shot - !

I have a little collection. So my Jades are arranged on the windowsill without a fixture in the summer

Rina, next to the sticks I planted some blue Ipomoea, but they are still quite small and it seems that the snails finds them delicious too. In the greenhouse I'm preparing some new ones and when they have seize enough I replant. btw. if they make a start there will be three sticks like a tipi.

Thanks Harry...I thought they may be supports for something...I have some long bamboo stick that I use for exactly same idea but much shorter than yours :) In previous garden I used to plant Ipomoea next to tall Juniperus, it was covered with blooms.
