Thank for helping me identify it. I thought they were "mums" and funny I didnt realize that "mums" was the lazy way of saying "chrysanthemum" , and are actually the same thing!

When i got the plant, I planted it in a much bigger pot and I broke up the rootball somewhat, and used fresh potting soil. The plant itself is about 4x bigger than originally. With our recent rains I don't think its a lack of water. Could it be sunlight? I have big trees in the front yard that limit the amount of sun this plant gets.

do you let the media near dry in between waterings ...??

It's an odd time of year for a Chrysanthemum to be flowering. I don't know if that has any bearing on the aborting flowers. If it was flowering at Easter last year it will have been forced to bloom out of season and may still be suffering from that.

My mums always try to bloom in the spring, so I finally decided to let them. After bloom is over, I cut them back with a hedge trimmer. With a little TLC, they bloom again in the fall, and I don't have to do that pinching all the time.

Its been raining a lot recently so I haven't manually watered. But I would normally water the plant when the leafs start looking a bit droopy, and then water generously.

The rain could be the problem. You consider 70s and 80s to be mild. I consider those to be high temperatures for a chrysanthemum and combined with wet that could be why the blooms are rotting. Chrysanthemums are a cool weather plant. At least they are here where they flower in the autumn until frosted.
