AC Quote Sanity Check

Morning all.

I just got a quote to install AC in a ~200 year old house in the Princeton, NJ area and want to make sure the numbers sound like they're in line. This is a new install in a home with no ductwork (hot water radiator heat). Two separate systems for up (~1,000 sq/ft) and down (~1,300 sq/ft). Basement and attic both easily accessible. Two ton for 2nd floor, three ton for first floor. Both 16 SEER variable speed, multi-stage, etc. I'm leaning toward Goodman which came in at $16.5k installed.

Sound reasonable?

NJ is one of the worst states for HVAC and pricing. I can't see the job from here to understand the scope of work involved and any installation obstacles. You don't provide any model numbers nor specs for the new ductwork systems. Admittedly my bias, Goodman is a brand I would not have. I would get several more quotes. My suggestion would be Carrier/Bryant and Trane/AmStd. Then and only then will you have other quotes to compare against.

What happens to current hot water system? Pipes, radiators, boiler?

Thanks. I feel the same way, brand is not a huge determining factor for me.

This is AC only, leaving the hydronic heat as is.

Includes everything, soup to nuts, all new ducts, registers, etc. for supply and return, sheet metal trunks and flex to registers, and electrical. Line sets will be protected on outside of house.

Reputable company, very positive reviews all around. They're not one of the "big guys" in the area, most of whom I've already received quotes from and nearly choked at the numbers I got back. Mind you they were all offering name brands but didn't put in half the effort this company did in going through the job with me.

I'll probably get one or two more quotes, but primarily I'm just looking to make sure this number seems in line with a "typical" job of this size (+/-), understanding full well that no two jobs are alike.

If that's the case make sure the outside condensing unit model is DSXC16 (2 speed) and the indoor AH is variable speed "communicating capable" then also have them install the CTK04 communicating stat for each system.

This is a great system when installed properly, but if this company is well respected as you say this should be a no brainer for you. Also make sure the both systems are properly registered so you get the full manufacture warranty.

I would want minimum 2 returns for each system properly sized along with filter media cabinet for each system...

I live in the Princeton area. If you are interested I can send you the contact information for the Carrier dealer I used several years ago for my HVAC systems. I continue to use him for my annual maintenance and warranty service. He will do a load calculation and show you several options for AC condensers.

Follow me and then send me an email and I will respond.

Thanks everyone for giving their two cents. I'm feeling better about this now.
