If you don't grow R. moschata, you are missing a major part of your garden (only applies warm zone 6 and above.) the moschatas make fragrant sprays of thirty or more blooms and are magnificent in their own right.

I have most of the noisettes that are for sale, I want to compare Mount Vernon Purple with Mrs. Woods Lavender Pink Noisette, which is a favorite (and I have space near a sitting area that will receive both moschata and Mount Vernon.

Old Gray Cemetery is one that I found and gave to Roses Unlimited to be sure that it didn't go extinct. It's easier to buy another from RU than to grow one out. Think vase shaped, healthy foliage tightly petaled light pink grading to white. Bloom sprays are noisette like. Repeats lustily.

I'm not surprised that there aren't more of their Kordes roses available. All that I have have such healthy foliage without any spraying that I get a bit angry at all the BS magnets I've bought for the last three decades.

William Morris for the name, Darcy Bussell for the red spot in a long border and Michaelangelo for the yellow spot I can see from my morning coffee spot.

I got Mt Vernon Purple Noisette from RU 2 years ago, and I really like it. It's in a large pot, but really needs to go in the ground... it's pretty large by now. I like its fragrance, too.

I have R. moschata, courtesy of Christopher, and also "Saluda Musk" which is a double musk found in SC; from what Malcom Manners says, I guess it should be the same as the other double musks.

Your post inspired me to finally google the Old Gray Cemetery, since I didn't know where it was. (Knoxville TN, for anyone else who didn't know.) Kudos to you for finding it, naming it and getting it into commerce. It sounds like a great rose to have. I had quite a few Noisette roses on my list of choices, but none made it into the order this time.

gibsongirl, I wondered if your earlier query about Amanda was related to the RU sale! I like it in the photos I've seen... I hope it does well for you. The Fawn is a pretty rose, and I think Ingrid has had good luck with it if IIRC.

I ordered Amanda Patenaude, too! ...and despite mixed reviews, Blanc de Vibert. Portlands seem to do well for me, so I'm hoping the trend continues with these two.

John, 'Blanc de Vibert' must do well somewhere, or it wouldn't still be around. I hope your garden is one of those places where it- and 'Amanda' are especially happy.

Virginia, yes I did ask about Amanda patenaude because of the sale. I decided to try it. I have a nice spot for it. I'm excite about the fawn too because I have a great spot for that one too.

John, I almost ordered blac de vibert too! It will fun to see how our Amandas do! I also orderd Loiuse D'arzen which was not on the sale list but has been on my short list.

Gibsongirl - we'll have to check in next summer on how our Amanda's have fared! Louise d'Arzen looks great. I have Boule de Neige, and it's a very healthy, reliable rose for me. Hopefully Louise is as good for you!

John- I actually just received boule de neige and will be planting it tomorrow along with Alfred columb, Maggie, and kronprincessin Viktoria. It will be a fun day!

Buford, I hope they still have the roses you want most. Champneys is a good rose here (it should be, since it originated nearby), but I have to confess that I still don't have a 'Blush Noisette' for comparison...

My 'Mt Vernon' is a more mature plant than my Champneys, so again, comparison isn't very useful. I do like the shape of the plant of 'Mt Vernon', and I also like the fragrance, although it isn't- to my nose- a typical musk fragrance.

Ann, I had Champney's from Rogue Valley. I was floored by the fragrance. Unfortunately I killed it before I could put it in the ground. The dangerous thing is that I'm going with some rose friends to RU so who knows what we will come back with!!! My friend has a big SUV so we have room for plenty of roses!

I ordered Alberic Barbier, Madame Figaro, Betty White and Leontine Gervais. I hope Alberic Barbier and Leontine Gervais can have some repeat......I didn't see mme Hardy on their list.....

It's not on sale, but I'm getting it anyway.

Ann, Thanks for mentioning about Rosa Moschata Temple Musk, I will see if they could add it to my order. I have 2 Rosa Moschata right now, but they aren't the real thing-checked by pros, I'd like to find out what the difference is, a learning process.

Ann, I'm so intrigued by Old Gray Cemetery. Can you tell me if it has any scent? I'm concerned it won't like Washington State, but may try it anyway. :)

I ordered Crepescule, Coquette des Blanches (not on sale but I ordered it anyway), The Faun and Amber Flash. I also tried for Baby Alberic but just missed the last one. Crep. will replace one that I lost years ago to over-zealous clean-up at our property line. I miss it every spring. Coquette des Blanches is going to reside in our memorial garden and I hope she will represent well. Amber Flash is just because. The Faun is for my granddaughter, just turned five, who wants her own pet rose. It will live in a pot till she has a place to plant it someday.

IIRC Harborrose used to live in north Alabama and moved to the (?) Seattle area and took Old Gray with her. In her garden there it got PM and she tossed it (Grabbing my smelling salts and doing the intro for PBS murder mysteries). To her amusement, it really liked her compost heap where it refused to die and was doing so well she saved it. I hope she'll come on and tell us the rest of her story with it.

Oh that's encouraging! Before I knew the story of this rose I was hunting for it here at the antique rose farm. They informed me I could only get it from RU and then I found the history here. It's just fascinating. I just want to make sure I'm not destined to kill it... ;) I'm headed to the Seattle Rose show today!

I'll be curious to see if the Amanda Patenaude some of you ordered is the same as the Portland of Glendora plants I had some years ago. That rose was so fragrant that I couldn't have the cut flowers in the house - simply too overpowering. The Faun in my garden is still doing well, and I think it would be a darling rose for a child to grow.

Oh, wow - I like the sound of that, Ingrid! Now I'm tempted to order Portland of Glendora, too, just to be sure I have that strong scent! I love the Portland roses. It seems like there's always room for one more...

Distant Thunder. I've tried to grow Distant Drums and am hoping the Clements hybrid will be more vigorous. What a color!

Ingrid, I'll be sure to post pictures of Amanda pasternaude. I find this rose really interesting. The fawn is going in a very prominent spot and maybe I'll ask my son to help me plant it. We have all been gardening as a family this spring.

I ordered Sander's White, The Garland, Kiftsgate, and Russel's Cottage Rose. So I got afew rambler's off my list and my husband picked out Sander's White :) I wish I could have afforded to order more, but I am very glad that I got the ones I did!

Alana, those sound great; it sounds like you've got a lot of room for pretty and spready roses.

I did change my RU order from what I had in the initial post; I added a non-sale rose, 'Louise D'Arzens' and switched it out for "Martha Gonzales". I've had LD on my want list for quite a while and very few U.S. nurseries have it; perhaps just RU?

I know the thrips will thank me when they come back; just now they are in hiding, or maybe the anoles, chickadees and titmice ate 'em all? (Wishful thinking...)

Have you ever been out to RU? I still haven't visited, but I think it's about 3 hours from here. Pat Henry had mentioned in an e-mail that May is the best time to visit to see everything blooming, but I wonder if it might not be smart to visit in the summer heat to see what is still blooming and not going 'summer dormant'.

Visiting in the summer is not a bad idea, Virginia. I did that one year in August in a rose garden connected to the Barona Casino and most of the Austins were dormant with a few exceptions like Grace while other modern roses were blooming their heads of. Yves Piaget was magnificent, which prompted me to try it twice in my garden, with less success.

I was under the impression that Glendora was thought to possibly be Joasine Hanet and is now favored to be Amanda Patenaude. I'll have to look her up.

Edited: The picture posted by Lori Levine at the end of the AP photos on HLM is an absolute dead ringer for Glendora. I would swear they are identical.

I went to Roses Unlimited once, but nothing was in bloom :( So I must go back. I have quite a few gardens I would love to visit, but I am always either short on time, resources or having family issues every year it seems. I hope to do more next year.

Ingrid, that's interesting that 'Yves Piaget' wasn't as happy in your garden as at the BC. Do you think that was due to microclimate or some other difference?

It is hard to sift out and weigh the variables. RU is a full zone lower than us, but the summer temps are probably pretty similar if looking at the heat index for each location, so a summer visit probably would be instructive. OTOH, I tend to have less energy in the summer heat, so getting my act together to go anywhere is always an iffy proposition.

Alana, I'm in the same boat... local gardens I'd like to visit/revisit, but somehow it doesn't happen. I hope y'all are getting slightly cooler temps for the weekend like we are.

Vmr, I got Louise d'arzens too! It looks beautiful. I'm zone 6 so it is going near my driveway where 5 feet of snow piles up and I get no cane damage. Hopefully it will be happy

gibson girl, I've been wanting 'Louise D.' and/or 'Boule de Neige' for a while now. That look really appeals to me. And I should have placed the initial order accordingly, but I'm glad I changed it before it was too late.

I hope my rose isn't expecting 5-foot snow drift blankets here; she'll be disappointed!

Do I recall that you also ordered 'Boule de Neige'? If so, you'll be able to make a good determination about how cold-hardy they are, comparatively speaking.

Glad to hear that your plant is good-looking, but I always expect good plants from RU.

Yes Virginia, I did ge boule de neige. I'm expecting that one to be a little more cold hardy. I have Louise in a spot where I can really baby her because of the noisette part. I am a little obsessed with the roses bred by Lacharme. I planted Alfred Colomb and I have coquette de Blanche on order for next year.

I was very impressed with the plants for RU.
