How do i keep birds from nesting in my hoya baskets!

I love my hoyas and some are hard to find and valuable to me. When ever a bird nest in a plant of mine, they first remove tons of the plant in order to build the nest. they always dig out the center of the basket so that if the plant was full before there will only be stems on the edges on the pot.

My nummularioides is in its second year with me and is getting very lush and i would be crushed if the plant got messed up by the birds. Some of the leaves have already been bitten off! And i just got my wayetti a few weeks ago and i will never find another one so that will also cause my heart to break if i see it torn all up and a nest in the middle of hte basket. Today i just found my ds70 dug through by something!

How the hell do i keep the birds out of my plants! If i find any in there this year im tempted to have robin scrambles eggs for breakfast.

A few ideas-

Plastic forks, bonus points for black ones. Snap the forky bits off from the handle, and stick them pointy side up in your pots.

You may also want to consider a fine wire mesh enclosure, but the forks would probably be easier.

if you put up a hanging basket with just soil and a few fake flowers in it,they will leave your hanging plants alone,or at least they did mine

those are good ideas. I don't have any solutions but recently had a bird in my rhiphallis so I know what kind of damage they can do. I ended up starting over from scratch and starting a bunch of new plants. But with a hoya...especially a young one you just can't do that.

I have had rats chew leaves off my hoya. Two next to each other one they didn't bother the other must have been tastier. This happened in my shade house which seems to be a rat super highway. I don't put hoyas in there anymore. (I used to put out poison for the rats until we got a puppy and she got into the poison...my bad!!. Pup is ok after emergency vet care but she still goes in there look for some tasty poison)
