Does anyone know what the name of this plant is? And maybe why it was so sad? Too much sunlight maybe? It was my grandmothers and I don't want to kill it!!

It looks like a corn plant (Dracaena fragrans.) Looks like it's been in a bit too low light for a while.

I would guess too much water or not enough.

Check the soil to see if it seems overly dry or wet. Has it been kept in a dark corner? If you think it might need more light, gradually move it to a lighter location. I suspect it needs to be repotted, but get it to perk up first if possible. Be sure it's in a pot with a drain hole in the bottom.

you can also do an Internet search "corn plant care" for additional help. let us know how it goes.

    Never feed a sick plant!

I only water mine maybe once every 2 weeks, and it's about 4 ft. high. I agree it looks overwatered, and not enough light.

Never feed a sick plant? What if the plant is in decline (sick) because A0 it's suffering multiple nutrient deficiencies or because B) the ratio of nutrients in the soil are badly out of kilter, both very common causes of decline? The only cure for A is fertilizer and B should be treated with a soil flush and ........ you guessed it - fertilizer.

The plant looks seriously over-watered. I'd depot it and examine the roots - maybe set it on a stack of newspaper (while out of the pot) for a half hr or so to soak up the excess water. Then, get control of my watering can hand and only water when the plant needs it. Use a wooden dowel rod sharpened in a pencil sharpener and stuck deep into the soil to 'tell' you when your plant does/doesn't need water. A wet or darkly stained tip means no water. A dry tip means time to water.

I'd probably make a plan to flush the soil very thoroughly the next time it needs water, then do the 'depot - set on newspaper' thing again, then fertilize as soon as you see it pushing new growth ....... and everyone that said it needs more light is right. Let me know if you want to chase these thoughts a bit.

I stand by what i said. Never feed a sick plant. Maybe foliar feed depending on the plant. But if the plant has root rot then conventional feeding isnt going to help at all.

Obviously that's a death sentence for any plants suffering from nutrient deficiencies. One really needs to be able to reason through and qualify the advice they give, lest those who depend on the advice use it to their plants' detriment. That piece of 'one size fits all advice' happens not to fit all.
