Red Letter Day in the Red Bed

The Red Bed was looking particularly floriferous today, so here are some garden shots and cultivar shots.

Mayans' Dawn and SC Francis Busby

Insider Trading with Rudbeckia

Insider Trading

Insider Trading backed by The Ultimate Sacrifice, Summer Celebration and Empire of Desire

Midnight Castle with the slow to open Tahlequah Fame

Spacecoast Francis Busby

Sweet Prairie Wind and Empire of Desire

Cardinal Desire, a late is open today. This one is always rose red for me, but in the hybridizer's Minnesota climate it is cardinal red.

Cloaked in Secrecy, also a late, opened today. It's a very dark red.

Everything is super! Your gardens, your photography and the cultivars! You have some of the latest and greatest! I got INSIDER TRADING this year because of your photos. So far it's doing great. I'm putting it of larger flowers with more open branching. Hope I get something!

    Enjoyed the show!

Thanks Jean! The ones you mentions are super pretty.

Ed - I'm very fond of Insider Trading. Last year it set some pods in extremely hot weather. I was trying to get a bigger flower that looked like IT with a white edge. Unfortunately those seedlings had a damping off problem and died. So I'm trying for some more seeds again. It's one of the few I have that has some lateral branching. The hybridizer registered it as having 40 buds per scape, but I don't have anything over 18-20.

Looks like a very good day. Everything open, with near perfect blooms. I am surprised how well Empire of Desire does, as I have seen it struggling to open. I like this picture of Blazing Cannons better; the previous one seemed to be half open. The Ultimate Sacrifice seems to be blooming freely on tall scapes. Would you say it is your best new one? The color of Cloaked in Secrecy seems very rich.

    Adore inside trading

Mantis - I would say The Ultimate Sacrifice is the best newer one I have. Some of its scapes are even taller than registered - 32 inches. Those scapes have 16-18 buds, and it is always open flat at the crack of dawn.

Love your garden shots today! Mayans Dawn looks intriguing, wouldn't mind seeing more photos of it.

Impossible for me to pick a favorite, they all have me drooling. The plants are wonderful, but your photography really shows them off. I especially like the shots of groupings.

Beautiful blooms today! The red bed looks impressive! Hard to pick a favorite, you have lots of beauties.

Nancy - Thanks for comments. I seem to have trouble taking garden shots, but I was happy with the ones I took today.

Lori - I'm very happy with how the red bed looks this year. Most of my other beds have been taken over with Bermuda grass and need to be completely redone.

Beautiful pics Debra. Insider Trader I saw was registered as EV and I have one of the parents here, Forever Red, which also was registered as EV but more like a SEV and it definitely does not have a problem growing here in the north. Enjoyed your garden pics.

Julia - I grew Forever Red for about 10 years in a pot and it was rock hardy until our winter two years ago, when I lost it and about 25 others in pots. Insider Trading did make it in a pot that winter. And now that it's in the ground, it seem to be doing well. It's taller than most of my evergreens this year, and does have nice lateral branching on the fans that get the most sun.

Beautiful pictures! I love Blazing Cannons and Ultimate Sacrifice. Cardinal Desire is always rose red for us too.

Oh my what gorgeous blooms! Can't pick a favorite :) Love the bed shots too.

Nan - It's interesting that Cardinal Desire is rose red for you too. Have you gotten any successful crosses with that one? I've never been able to set a pod on it, but it's usually too hot here by the time it's open.

Nat - Good to see you posting again! Are your daylilies ready to bloom?

I love how velvety Cloaked in Secrecy is...how does it hold up at the end of the day?

Annika - Cloaked in Secrecy holds up very well in the low 90s. It's supposed to be 97 degree here today with a heat index of 105. I'll check to see how it does in that brutal weather.
