    A few more

    Delany sisters

    Winnipeg parks

    Mardi Gras

    Tamango

Venidium - Orange Prince from seed thrown in some pots.

I'm glad your roses are able to help you recover, Jim. I think it's the best therapy yet. All your plantings look so healthy and cheerful. You've convinced me to grow marigold again.Halloblondie, the Delaney Sisters looks better and better everytime I see it. I'd love to know how she performs and looks as a bush.

Jim, I'm so glad you're outside and photographing your flowers. That's a good sign, but I'm so sorry you ended up in the hospital with a mild stroke. I agree with vaporvac that your plantings look cheerful--they look just great. You are the marigold king, and we'll all be growing them before long (I am, but they are still trying to overcome the depredations of the dastardly quail). Is that your morning glory covering the fence behind your hanging basket? That's pretty impressive. I found out today that my volunteer morning glory looks a heck of a lot better on my neighbor's side of the fence than mine. It's shaded out by big roses, so it climbs over to the neighbors and shows off...... Keep on gardening--it will keep you healthy.

Blondie, your roses look lovely, but that photo of Intrigue is especially elegant and artful. I may be plant crazy, but I've never heard of venidium. I love it, and now want to grow some.

Titian, that's a very striking posy you made for Jim. Would you name the flowers you used? It's so unusual. I like it very much.

Well, judging from everyone's great photos, I need to get cracking and take a few myself. I seem to have so many garden chores that I never get around to taking photos. I made a bouquet of only Golden Celebration roses a few days ago--first all yellow nosegay I've ever made, and I used nothing but roses from the top of candelabra, just as fragrancenutter suggested. That was a good idea. GC is nothing but candelabra sticking out wildly. He looks like he stuck a cane in an electrical outlet. Diane

    Thanks again everyone!

Feeling much better this morning... :-)

That's my neighbors morning glories Nanadoll.... Actually she had scrawny MornG planted but I helped things along by tossing some of our MornG seeds her way...he he...

    Snapped these this morn...

    Thomas Affleck:

Here is our MornG on our fence Nanadoll...I had to keep it somewhat sparce & tame this year because there is a lavender plant (left in pic) in there that needs moved yet...

Can only be here a second as I am late for work. Jim! Sending you lots of positive thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. So sorry to hear about your stroke.

Everyone's flowers look beautiful. Welcome to all the newby's. Got to scoot. Still up to 100 degrees here in the afternoon.....

I feel fall coming, thank goodness! This summer has been the hottest I remember and not all my roses made it. I'm looking forward to my roses recovering and the fall flush. Do you think it's time to think about saying goodbye to the Rosey Days of Summer? Thank you Jim for hosting this thread. I wish you all well this coming season.

Yep Bonnie maybe someone else can start a new thread when Fall starts?

Actually we started getting fall weather then summer struck again! High 80's & 90's this week up until Saturday then fall weather returns...

I'm off to rehab today at 1:30 to get evaluated...I'm still feeling much better today!

Hard to sleep in hospitals...lol...They woke me up every 2 hours to evaluate my sitiuation...I was squeezing other peoples fingers and all that stuff all day and night long...

I also have a brain tumor which they monitor every 1-2 years with MRI for growth. So the brain MRI the hospital did also showed my brain tumor has not grown... I found out I had a brain tumor in 2010 after a head on collision with a drunk driver...It has not grown at all in 6+ years...

    Had these tests done:

Goodness Jim, what a lot you are dealing with. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Diane, the flowers in the posy are

blue is ceanothus 'Trewithen Blue' - super fast growing

    yellow abutilon

'red gold' abutilon - makes me think of clothing the Venetians might have worn

    and a 'paperwhite' narcissus

Last year I tackled the bed where the water tank is, and pulled out loads of some sort of leafy thing that spreads underground. Not my cup of tea. Still pulling bits out! Planted it with what's above, both yellow and blue buddleias, and a few white hydrangea, a white cistus, and a low tibouchina. At the moment it's my favourite part of the garden, despite the water tank, and a couple of overflow pipes.

halloblondie, I love the look of St Patrick's - it seems to glow.

Jim, sending prayers up for your complete healing. Please keep us posted!

Well, we had hail AGAIN!!!!! We had 4 bouts of hail today. I think that makes 12 hail attacks altogether. Isn't that just gross! Leaves are falling from the trees, and now the hail comes and ruins the flowers I have. That may have been the last flush (not that there were very many) this year. What a pathetic summer. Sheesh!

Carol - but I'm still in a good mood.

    Thanks Holly! Thanks everyone!

Glad your still in a good mood after all that Carol... Mother nature can be cruel at times!...

Shows the different shades of Julia Child:

I wish all our roses had disease resistant leaves up until frosts like the D. Ko's... Carefree Celebration another Radler rose is also staying very clean so far....

Anyone else growing Golden Buddha? Mine was a new band in April and has just been a wonder! It self-rooted a low lying cane, so now I have 2! The flowers are getting bigger & the last, biggest flower lasted a few days, even in the 96 degree humidity!

I will try to get a photo. The glare is challenging for my phone camera.

    last modified: 9 years ago

Yes please post a pic of your rose Holly!

How big do the hailballs get in your area Carol? You need a break!

Not very big, Jim, but it's the power of how hard they hit. It's been very frustrating this summer. Yes, I could use some sunny weather. Although any new buds developing now won't come to fruition.

I've been trying to figure out who the seed parent is for my seedling. It could only be a rugosa or Elina from my friend's yard or John Davis from mine. I'm thinking that John Davis was the seed parent, because the leaves look the same. I love the green tinge in the buds! Don't know if that will still be there when the bud opens. It's been trying to open for weeks. If you notice, there are 2 more buds waiting to open, so it looks like John Davis rather than Elina, since John Davis has lots of flowers. The veining is pretty nice. It also had a touch of pink to the tips of the petals, but now it looks like the insides could be pinkish.

This is my first non-rugosa seedling - I'm pretty excited about it. Just wish I had kept better records.

    Carol

Awesome Carol! Keep us updated on its progress! Thanks!

    Thanks, Jim!!!

I just realized I said that the tips are pink. I meant that when the sepals came down, the tips of the rose were pink.

    Anyone have suggestions for names?

    I was thinking of

    White John (for John Davis)

But it might be nice to have names based on its looks. Although maybe I should wait until it's opened up.

Also, if JD is the seed parent, this new rose could get pretty large and may be slightly more hardy than the usual HT.

    Carol

Please post a pic after it opens Carol! Does it have much fragrance? That might help name it... Maybe "Sweet John" or something...lol

Nope...so far no fragrance. But I wouldn't expect it on such a new rose...I would have to wait 3 years to see whether there's fragrance. That happens to most of my roses here.

Sweet John would be a great name if the fragrance comes in. :)

Carol, what a pretty little rose. I've been racking my brain for something meaning pretty and yet somehow diffident. Come in Diane!

I know!! I can't believe how difficult it is to name a rose!! Thanks for your effort!!

I still can't believe that I (and the bees) helped to create this brand new rose!! How cool!!

    Carol

Carol, what a lovely rose you and the bees have created. There's a slight fluffiness to it and a bit of blush (very slight) that comes through in the photos. I love it. Is the bud very large? Would the buds open faster if the rose were under a grow light? Or is it already under light? I kind of let my thoughts flow over the first impressions I have of your rose, and some preliminary names popped up, but probably need some tweaking, I'm sure: Pearl Blush, Blushing Pearl, Silver Pearl, Pink Pearl, Soft Pearl, Silver Swan, Swan's Down, Elegant Swan, John's Pearl, Pink Divinity....keep going people... Diane

White Long Johns??? Joke, people, it's a joke, a very bad joke.

White Long Johns!!! That's it!!! LOL LOL

The bud is the exact sizie of a John Davis bud. I'm thinking 1 1/4" - but it's outside now (12:41 a.m. here), and I'm just trying to remember. It's been outside all summer, and has just decided to bloom now. I think I'm going to plant it in a large pot and overwinter it in the garage. It was under gro lights all last winter.

I actually like the name John's Pearl. But then, if someone doesn't know the parentage...it's not as clear as to the meaning. Hmm.....

Maybe it'll be clearer when it opens.

Thanks for helping me to feel special about this rose. I really appreciate it. It's my first rose that came from my roses. I have gotten some hips from my friend's yard and grown quite a few to seedlings...but only 2 have flowered yet. But this rose is super special to me, because it's from my yard. :)

    LOL Nanadoll!

I see Pope John already has a rose named after him so that's out...lol

"Sir Virgin John" fitting for a white rose...lol.. But john was spreading his seed around so maybe not so much...lol

    "Sir John"

    "Just John"

    Hummm... thinking...

I like Nanadolls suggestion of John's Pearl... It must be exciting to have your own rose... :-)

    last modified: 9 years ago

I like Diane's suggestion of John's Pearl. It fits the rose. It looks like a treasure. It makes sense knowing the parentage, but even if you don't, it's a fine mystery. Who's John? A pirate maybe, who found his precious pearl!

@rosecanadian - super neat about the new rose.

@vaporvac - you asked about delany sisters. She is very healthy, vigorous & blooms prolifically, especially for a first year rose. No black spot. Colour varies from bloom to bloom, which I think is nice. I will let you know how it over winters. Sites rate it's hardiness from zone 6-7 mainly. I'm hoping she overwinters well. For an impulse purchase - she has been outperforming some other ones. I will post a new pic later today.

So the big news for me this week was my son started junior kindergarten - Yay free time for me. I spent the first day gardening alone it was heavenly!

I also got a new phone, with a supposedly amazing camera. Hopefully, I can find time to try it out. However, we are having 24 people for dinner tomorrow so I need to spend the day doing chores & errands

@jasmine - that's a clever description for the name! I like the idea of a rose with a pirate story background. I would buy that! My husband & son are really into pirates. My husband even looks like a pirate!!!

    last modified: 9 years ago

Having some free time is always a good thing...lol... Hope your new phone works out well for you Halloblondie! Enjoy your dinner and company tomorrow!

    Good one Bonnie...

How about......"Maybe John" ... since the seed parent is unknown...

Thanks. Diane is our true writer and poet on the forum. I see where her granddaughter gets her talent from.

Halloblondie, what phone did you get? The true test of the camera is if it can capture reds and purples. My phone cannot. 24 people? That's a lot of company.

I got the Samsung Galaxy edge. Reds are looking good!

@vaporvac - delany sisters pic for you

    Above shot

    Front view

    Bloom & bud

Only downside - she's a wee bit prickly!

Carol, how about "Perhaps" since perhaps JD is the father & perhaps it will develop fragrance? :D!

I will have to wait for the next Golden Buddha blooming. Have had a couple of bad days & haven't been able to get outside. Our sun is slightly losing intensity, so I should be able to get a photo. GB is planted at the corner if my driveway & walkway, so the glare is tough. And I am "Perhaps" the world's worst photographer! :P

    Thanks everyone!

Holly - Perhaps...hmmm...that's definitely original!! I like it..but not love it. Good thinking though - clever!! Good luck with your picture taking!

Halloblondiie - That looks like a great red rose! Lots of beautiful flowers coming!! That's great about your son!! Good for him and good for you! Is he excited??

Jim - Maybe John - I like that one too!

I agree that Diane's "John's Pearl" is the best name...that's a really good name!! I just might choose that one. :)

Thank you, Bonnie and Carol, for saying those nice things. And Carol, I've been thinking about this a lot and will say it right out: I think you would make a terrific "starter" of the next seasonal thread. I love your posts and enthusiasm, and your sunny attitude about the awful weather you experienced this summer shows through in all the topics we touch on. You're a real spirit lifter. Diane

Carol is definitely enthusiastic, sweet, very descriptive and would make a great host. I pretty sure this is a link to her fall thread, started today: The Fall of the Rosen Empire. It begins with a song :-)

It was 96 degrees Fahrenheit in my area today. But that's a cool down from before and I definitely feel fall coming. My roses are recovering from the excessive heat of summer. Their bare canes are putting on leafy growth. Maybe they are responding to my fertilizer concoction as well as the pleasant warmth outside. I should have blooms in about 5 or 6 weeks. Four new roses will be delivered in mid-October. Yay! Fall blooms!

Jasmine and Jim - awww.... :)

Good thing your rose season is about to turn wonderful for you, Jasmine!! Leaves are falling here. :)

Tad late in submitting a name for the rose but here goes: How about "Big Bad John" from the country song performed by Jimmy Dean?

    Everyone,

Carol started a new fall thread called The Fall of the Rosen Empire. Join us...

@nanadoll- that red rose is red fountain. Not rated zone 5. But I liked it so much at the store I picked it up for $8. Another impulse purchase that has done very well.

Going to go over to the fall thread now.

Jim, thank you for hosting the summer thread. I have thoroughly enjoyed your humour and everyone's contributions.

    Trish

Yes, Jim, double thanks for doing such a good "job" hosting the summer thread. Love those marigolds and roses and your devilish sense of humor. Get the skeleton and scythe guy out--Halloween's a coming! Diane

Toolbelt - I love that song!!! A little too masculine for my delicate little white rose though!! :)

Really loved this summer thread everyone!!

How about "Johns delight" for the new rose Carol... he he

Hey everyone! I finally have some time to catch up on all the posts. Love all the pics as usual.

I don't have much time to tend my garden as my pre-kitchen reno is taking a lot of time. All that is finally finished and now the actual renovation is going to start this week. It is both exciting and scary..lol.

Anyways, my garden is overgrown. I have to say that this year has been unusual as generally, most of the D.A. roses loves the heat. They are the tallest I have seen them at. Teasing Georgia and Evelyn is at way over 5 1/2 feet. It is perhaps shorter compared to others living in much warmer weather but up here it is an accomplishment. I finally should have the chance to peg them but the cooler weather is setting in. My Graham Thomas who I consider a wimp in my garden is actually flowering more. Not as vigorous as other people say but it is at its best so far.

The other roses either loves or hates the heat. Some simply does not want to grow or flower much, including my pride and joy Julia Child. It was a non-stop bloomer last year but this year it only had two bloom cycles and it seem to have taken a long pause. Most hybrid teas and floribundas just seem to be "stunted" when the hot weather appeared. There are some exceptions of course as a few hybrid teas just reached over six feet tall which is very scary to see..lol. I usually don't see hybrid teas that high. It is even taller than any of my climbers. Unfortunately I don't know names of the giant hybrid teas.

Most of my first year roses are doing good, nothing spectacular but they are growing. Of all the new ones, Twilight Zone seems to be most unhappy. She dropped half of the plant leaves two weeks ago. Half of the plant is green and flowering while the other half is bare. It is really strange. Pomponella and Heritage, of all the new roses are most happy. Pomponella is a dainty lady and flowers alot now, pushing one octopus canes too. I can't wait to see what she will do next year. Heritage is just beautiful and gorgeous. This is my second bush as my older heritage seems not to be doing so great over the years. I love this rose so much that I am willing to grow it again and again..lol.
