Bees in My Bonnet, Bees on My Knees and Daylily Blooms

I've been under attack in the garden this week by great big buzzing bumble bees. Whether photographing, watering, or weeding, these bees seem to be mistaking me for a giant flower. A couple of days ago I came in the house with a bee on my straw hat. I was able to walk back out and shake it off. Yesterday while watering, one of these bumbles kept landing on my rose colored shirt and trying to extract nectar. It came after me 8-9 times. I thought it was just the color of my shirt attracting the persistent pollinator. But this morning I felt something on the top of my head and it another bumble bee! I have no idea what's making me so attractive to these insects. Luckily I've managed to escape being stung. I am allergic to bee stings, so I try to avoid them. Here are some photos I took while trying to stay bee free.

This is a seedling I've been evaluating for three or four years. It used to have excellent stats until the seedling bed became too shady. It's Trimmer seedling "Laughing Hyena" X Back Scratcher. It has a 7.5 inch bloom.

Victorian Garden Emerald Breeze is a tall daylily with large 6.5 inch blooms.

Willow Dean Smith is beginning to bloom

River City Pier Surfer

Linda Beck

Corolla Light

Spacecoast Francis Busby continues to perform well each day and has three rebloom scapes on the way!

Belated Greetings, a late bloomer

Always a great show, Debra. They are all lovely to look at. Of course, very recognizable is Willow Dean Smith, what a beauty. That's a pretty seedling, how tall is it? Fantastic color on Spacecoast Francis Busby and three more scapes makes it even better. I like Corolla Light, too, and Belated Greetings with that green throat.

P.S. Debra, sorry you are having so much trouble with bumble bees--there do seem to be more of them about this year.

I love your seedling. I love the fact that it has a similar shape to "Laughing Hyena" with a color other than red/yellow. Also, River City Pier Surfer is still calling my name.

Avedon - The seedling's scapes have been 30 inches the past three seasons. This year, in the season of stunted scapes, it has a variety of heights with one 27 incher and the others around 24.

Nan - Thanks for your comment about the seedling. I have never been able to set a pod on laughing hyena since I got that one. And that was the only seedling that survived out of three. But it's a good one and very hard. In the past the blooms have had a rounder look. Perhaps the reduced sunlight has something to do with that.

Bumble bees are abundant here but we always have them every year as well as the honey bees. I too am allergic to bee stings. Laughing Hyena" X Back Scratcher is so pretty. Nice cross.

I only received one smallish fan of SC Francis Busby this spring, but it does have a scape. I seldom get rebloom here, so never count on it ( why a good initial bud count is important to me). Just hoping mine is as pretty as yours......Linda Beck is beautiful but has aways lacked the vigor yours has. I'd like to find a twin color like that that would perform better for me.......Love the pattern on River City Pier....Ah another yellow I haven't heard of- VG Emerald Breeze. How do you like this one?.........Like the Hyena Back Scratcher (ouch). Another good color...........Maryl

Julia - Thanks for the seedling comment and commiserating about bees. We always have bumble bees here too. But they've never been this aggressive toward me.

Maryl - I got VG Emerald Breeze, Lunar Empire and the bonus Empire of Desire from Paul Owen, Slightly Different Nursery. I wanted tall northern bred daylilies. I like all three, but Empire of Desire is my favorite. They all three have heavy substance and look good at the end of the day. I'm growing Lunar Empire and VG Emerald Breeze in pots at the moment, and they don't have as many buds as Empire of Desire, which is planted in the Red Bed. VG Emerald Breeze has a green tint to it and is very ruffly. Even the sepal are ruffly. It seems to draw thrips more than the other two. No idea why.

Oh My! These are so stunning! As always, SC Francis Busby is my favorite.....I LOVE that one more every time you post it. After that it's hard to narrow it down to second place. It could be Willow Dean Smith since I have admired that one every year you've shown it and it still 'wows' me. But then, your seedling is really special too. And Corolla Light is bright and cheerful. And I collect late bloomers and have never seen Belated Greetings before and I love it. And the others are gorgeous as well. You really make it a challenge to pick a favorite....lol.

I have had bees do that to me too. One time I had a honeybee attach itself to the back of my shirt right between my shoulder blades and I was alone in the garden and couldn't figure out how to get it off without getting stung. It just clutched to me for the longest time and I didn't want to go inside with it on me so I stayed out til hubby came home and he got it off (with gloves). I don't know if it fell asleep on my back or what. It's so weird and I could never figure it out either. Maybe we are just as sweet and appealing as a flower?

Love all the flowers, Spacecoast Francis Busby especially but they are all beautiful!

Sorry about the bee troubles, so weird! We have lots of wasps yikes but haven't seen any bees in awhile.

Lovely blooms! My favorites are Willow Dean Smith, River City Pier Surfer, and your seedling.

So difficult to evaluate anything this year, but I hope your Hyena seedling has good bud count. I like that prominent white midrib.

You always have nice seedlings! Really liking Willow Dean Smith, River City Pier Surfer & Spacecoast Francis Busby. S Francis Busby has been doing really well for you, hasn't it, & more coming. Always good to know. That last one is very pretty for a late, seems like most of my lates tend to be yellow or orange.
