I'm terrified...what kind of snake is this???

So I was playing with my daughter outside and we saw this small little black snake laying dead in our driveway. I've been in this house for less than a year. A million things are going on in my head....

Do you have a photo? It's probably a black rat snake. Nonvenomous and harmless.

EDIT: Saw the photo pop up after I posted. Looks like it might be a garter snake, but it's hard to tell. Also nonvenomous and harmless.

If it's got a yellow stripe down it, garter snake. We have tons of them and they can get quite large. S east Wisconsin.

The only poisonous snakes in Wisconsin will have a rattle at the end of their tails. Also, those are very very rare here.

Also, snakes are your friends. They will keep rodent populations under control. They are generally very shy and won't bother you unless messed with, or stepped on (do not try to pick up).

The only thing you need to worry about a Garter snake is that they can smell when you pick them up, and they eat toads. I would consider it a beneficial creature in any yard.
