How to do drawer pull son 36" wide drawers?

Our kitchen is being installed (new construction). We have to pick the hardware. The design is pretty traditional and I would like to keep that but with some 36" wide drawers, the carpenter is suggesting I go with wider pulls, maybe 5". My concern is that in most of the pictures of kitchens I see with wider pulls, the cabinets and pulls look very contemporary to me. The concern with 2, 3" pulls, on the large drawers is that we will be lazy and only use one side which wouldn't be great for the drawers long term. I can order any pulls I want so we have the option of anything but what is practical, that would still look "right" in this kitchen? Any ideas? We can do all 3" and have 2 on the large drawers, do all 5", or do a mix of sizes. I would like to keep costs down ideally and some of the larger pulls get expensive. Cross posting on the kitchens forum.

Here are some of the drawings since the style is hard to tell in the actual photo as parts aren't installed yet.

Looks like a luscious kitchen. May I ask how wide and tall your sink window is? Is it indeed one window?

this is my favorite pull. My dd used it in her kitchen (on my advice). I have it in 2 bathrooms. She used 2 on her 36" drawers. She used a combination of these pulls and the matching cup pulls.

I think it would be ok to put two on the larger drawers with the way today's drawers are made.

I ordered a variety of pull sizes (including appliances pull sizes) for my larger drawers. I am very visual and wanted to see if a 5, 8 or 12 inch pull is best.

I can't imagine using two hands to open a drawer. It just doesn't seem like a natural thing to do as you'd have to center yourself more likely over the drawer. Otherwise its ergonomically odd. I could be completely off though.

Personally I'd only want one in the center

ILoveRed- yes it is one window with a transom. The main window is an awning window, it is 5' wide. I think combined the window an transom are about 4.5' tall? We have 9' ceilings. Those pulls are pretty- are they $25 a pull? We were thinking much lower budget.

I checked today and we only have 2 stacks of 36" drawers (5 total drawers) so it's not too many at least (though there are other big drawers, just not that big). Time is a concern so we can only really go to local stores to get pulls to try for size (HD, Lowes). We need to order asap sadly (nothing like waiting for the last minute!)

I have 2 4" pulls on my 2 36" drawers and while I really love the pulls, they are filigree cup pulls, my bottom drawer has heavy roaster pan, Stock pot, and big skillet, wok, etc and other stuff and it does get opened frequently. I find myself always trying to open it from one end and now the drawer is whomperjawed. A 2 pulls are great for decorative purposes and empty drawers. A larger center pull is functional and still attractive.

Seems to me the objections to having two pulls on kitchen cabinets is more a traditional situation than functional one. Remember, many bedroom dressers have double handles(yes, I am aware the drawers are also wider) and are considered normal.

Some of the objections also may have to do with how the person is working, often having something in one hand when opening a drawer for a pot/pan/skillet/etc. One example of this is the French door refrigerator. Transitioning from a single door(conventional or side by side) means changing the way the fridge is opened with something in a hand.

Another situation is the way the drawers are built and how the glides are installed. Many newer drawers are not built as sturdily as they used to be and will rack more easily. Drawers with through dovetail construction are much more sturdy than half lap or similar style corner joints, which rely on glue and mechanical fasteners to make the joint.

By the same measure, many glides are easier and smoother operating than older types.

For myself, I'd rather have two pulls on a wide drawer then one big one. Esthetics.

I asked the same question a couple of days ago and decided that I would go with a single pull vs 2 smaller pulls because it would be a hassle to open a drawer with both hands.

Im going with Amerock Westerly pulls and the largest size in that style is about 7" long which should be okay. I'll do the smaller drawers and door pulls in the next size down.

Sarah - how is the build coming? I'd love to see more pictures. As you may remember we are building a very similar, although smaller, house. Our foundation is in and we finally start framing this week.

Hi Michael. We actually moved in, though not everything is done. Here is the current kitchen progress. One day I will make a post with proper pictures to share with all who have helped us along the way. We still have to do a backsplash and a few other things in the kitchen but you can see the progress here. We haven't unpacked yet so there are things on the counters still. We ended up going with 5" (I think?) pulls and only used 2 on the 36" drawers (just on the side of the island and under the cooktop). Those big drawers looked too sparse with 1. I think you were also interested in the stairs/entry? Here are a few pics of those too
