Green Granite Counter w Green Backsplash?

Hello .... I recently purchased a new home and am in the process of making it "mine". I'm very fortunate the that PO's did a wonderful job remodeling, and there is very little real work I need to do. One thing though, the beautiful kitchen doesn't have a backsplash, and I want to add one. I'm not sure the name of my granite, but it is dark green with some black and burgundy, the overall impression is dark green. The walls are a neutral, cool, tan.

I don't want to have a lot going on in the kitchen, or add another color element. I added stained glass to my upper cabs, and want that to be the star. I also want my kitchen to be classic and timeless, but still interesting. The house is a Craftsman CA Bungalow, so I don't want to be "on trend".

Would a green tile backsplash work with green granite? When I google, it seems that most green granite counters have a tan/cream bs, but that seems kind of blah to me. But I'm not sure green on green is a good choice either

On to the pics!

This is my kitchen, listing photos, so with the PO's stuff. But the professional photos show the colors most accurately. I added stained glass to the upper cabinet and will be replacing the stove with a Bluestar.

Here is the new stained glass, sorry, lighting is awful!

Here are my tile choices, and close up of the granite

Fireclay Basil w Black Patine

And then finally, I thought I could add some interest to the green on green by using an interesting shaped tile.

TIA!

Your home is a treasure. You must be so thrilled!

Big yes to the green. Also on losing the short granite splash. Although I will admit I agree with Palimpsest that it looks good as is too. But with the range issue I think it needs to go.

I think your granite might be called Tropical green, Hawaiian green, or Kerala green. That might help you if you want to narrow down your Google searches from just "green granite".

I like the Kelp color best. I think it is the lightest one which was on the left hand side in that first photo with all three greens? You then posted it again most recent. Gorgeous!

Big no to the different shaped tile. I'm no expert, but those shapes don't look craftsman at all to me. I'd stick with the classic subway size or maybe look into squares, as I often see that shape tile in craftsman homes. Such an adorable home! I too would love to see more photos of the rest.

I'd do the squares as they're traditionally Craftsman and the least busy. I see where eam is going with the dark green suggestion--it limits your color palette to one tone of green, what with everything else you've got going on. The middle Fireclay might be a good choice. The others are brighter but I don't think that's a necessary goal in a true Craftsman.

No ogee drop. Don't let the tile compete with the stained glass.

I also think a lighter green would look good. I wouldn't use glass, it seems too contemporary for your style home.

Yes get rid of the 4 inch counter that is creeping up your backsplash if you can. I would not do glass unless you lived by the beach but even then I don't think its right for your look. I'd also stick with subways versus the shapes because it is more craftsman. I agree with you that they are hot right now, but I think sometimes timeless things come into trend (i.e. white kitchens).

Here is the medium tile painted in. I pulled the color right from the tile but of course it's very "flat"

all looks too dark....need light tile to set off the floral panorama..it has a lot of dark to it and you have plenty of green with the leaves/stems and counter....maybe terracotta craftsman shade if you want color.

As much as I adore the shapes, "timeless and classic" for a Craftsman means a 4" square tile. It may seem like a less exciting choice, but it would be more in keeping with the architecture of the house. Please don't get glass tile for that space.

This is the tile Fireclay Tile's founder put in his bungalow kitchen. Mind you, he could have used anything he wanted...

My 1927 craftsman bungalow that I bought from the original owners many years ago had the original subway tile in the kitchen. Either square or subway will work fine, whichever you prefer.

    aimeekm thanked cpartist

Oh, use 3" square tiles! They are so sweet and would be a good scale for your limited wall space. I think the white ones in eam's second photo are 3". Fireclay has 3" tiles, as well as Sonoma Tilemakers in the Stellar line.

I love what they did with this kitchen with square tiles in two colors. That would work in your kitchen if you don't want to go all green.

If you want to leave the short granite splash, or if it proves too difficult to remove it, a short backguard on the stove can help it flow across better. Not saying you should leave it, just suggesting options.

Yes, I still think a lighter shade would be better. Of course it is a personal decision, and this is only my .02! I love a bright kitchen, a dark backsplash will just pull more light away. I also see a black pencil line as very craftsman. I agree with CP that either square or basic subway. Maybe both: square on the bottom, black pencil, subway or square on the diagonal.

    ColumbusGuy has a great example!

Yes, cp, subways are fine. And if we ever hear from the original poster again, she should know that she doesn't have to stick with historically appropriate choices just because she owns a craftsman home. But to my eye, shiny glass tiles and ogees are not a great choice for this space.

As for the color....it is most accurately represented in the top images. This is the pairing that looked stunning in my head, anyway.

It would be great to see a sample in place. She could also leave the sink side alone and tile in the range bs.

Fireclay Kelp tile. We used a combination of 4x8, 4x4 and 4x2. Some of the colors have a lot of color variation and some are flatter. With the green countertop mixing the shades of the backsplash could look really nice. Not all colors come in all sizes. I would stay with the more traditional craftsman square/rectangle and not glass.

And if we ever hear from the original poster again

I'm here! I'm traveling for work the balance of this week, so hard to post. But I'm reading and appreciating all the feedback!

Thanks for all the replies, and the love for my kitchen! I wish I could take more credit for it, but I was just very fortunate to find this house that was so well loved and remodeled so beautifully, and that I could afford! You guys have made me even more excited about my own kitchen!

    So here are my thoughts:

Thanks for giving me the confidence to go with green. I liked the idea, but was afraid my love for green might blind me, and I might make a costly mistake.

I now see that the tile shapes like Ogee Drop would detract from the overall look I'm going for, so that is off the table. I'm ok with not being historically accurate, but if it can get the look I want and have it be accurate, it's a bonus.

So I have ordered the Fireclay Venetian Green, and will see how that looks. It seems to lean blue-green, while I prefer yellow greens, but I'm interested to see it against my granite. I have time to make this decision so I will probably look around for handmade other green tiles, and get samples of those.

With the samples I have now, I'm liking the idea of mixing the 3 colors so I have some variation, and it's not just a big block of green. I was leaning toward Kelp, but in lunarlab's pic, it looks too bright for my kitchen. The sea of Basil in pippiep's pic looks amazing. I'm still not sure if I want to add interest with slight variation in color, or go with more of a solid appearance to not compete from the stained glass, pippiep - Is the Basil with or without the Black Patine?

I like the idea of 3x3 square tiles a lot! If the color I decide isn't available in 3x3, then I will go subway. I've been convinced that I can still do subway even though it is hot right now, and it will still look period appropriate, instead of trendy. But I think the 3x3 will be a point of differentiation from all the subway tile you can buy and see everywhere. I like the idea of a black pencil liner as well ... hmmm ... so much to think about.

I will definitely remove the 4" bs that is there. I don't see removing it being an issue. It's good though to know I can keep it if I absolutely have to for some reason.

    Linelle - I thought it was quarter-sawn oak, but I wasn't sure!

Any suggestions for other tile companies to look at? Other than Fireclay I have Artistic Abode Tile & Sonoma Tilemakers on my radar.

As far as more house pics, the inside is still a work in progress, I have no art up etc yet. But here is another outside pic.

Thanks so much everyone for your input!

I don't have much new to add after reading all comments. I am in the camp that likes green, and wouldn't advise glass or Ogee tiles. I like square tiles.

I'm mostly posting to say how taken I am with your home. There was a thread a while back on dream houses and the photo I used to describe mine looks a lot like your house. Congrats on finding such a beauty!

Thanks for the tile links! Some gorgeous tile, but I'm not sure if any tile is worth $669/sq ft! I'd love to know if it has ever been purchased! Looks like I'm going to be making a trip to some tile dealers next week.

Thanks amck2. I have to say I'm surprised by all the praise my house has gotten on this thread. There are so many gorgeous homes on GW. Mine is tiny and relatively modest, not in the league of so many of the homes on here!

Your house is warm and inviting and that in my mind at least trumps grand any day.

If you want to blow your budget my favorite all time tiles are Motawi. I lust after them for my backsplash and my fireplace surround. I'm probably not going to be able to afford them for my backsplash, but I'm hoping to be able to use them for my fireplace.

Love that Motawi site..I think I saw some of their works in one of the few good stores around here..going to check Encore Tile too.

I don't need tile right now, I can look at it for ages though.

april, i go into tile stores just to drool. Most women would prefer shopping in a kitchen place, or clothing store? I'm happiest in an art store or in any store that relates to the house. Yes I even like going up and down the aisles in a hardware store.

No tile is worth that amount. It is going to take the tile industry a while to realize that they can custom make the molds on their new three-dimensional printer and begin to print out some really interesting title.

Practigal, I think they've realized it already..do you know this site, Surface View? They are in UK. oh my. be still my heart. I don't know how they do it, but they take any image-galleries, museums, medieval books, you name it- and print it onto tile...and it does look good.

    but still..handmade is handmade.

vpierce, I know Encore too! Sure thing, the very same store where I saw this Motawi. I even was contemplating it..in the very beginning of the remodel..when I was young and naive..)) Beautiful colors.

cpartist, yes..same with me..hardware store might be a bit too much though..))

All this gorgeous tile is making me think the Fireclay is a bargain! Isn't it funny how quickly perception of value changes!

i'm in trouble w the Motawi tile, there is a dealer 1.5 miles from my home. Budget realities will certainly keep me from using it in my kitchen, (at least they better!), but oh my, the art tile. I've been looking for a piece of art for my bathroom, I believe I may have found it in the dragonfly tiles.

The Encore tile is beautiful, but maybe a bit showy for my kitchen?

Oh my gosh, Fireclay is an incredibly good value, especially when you consider their Foundations line starts at $15/SF. Of course, your beautiful greens are a little pricier, but well worth the cost, I think. Were you impressed when you got your samples?

What endears them to me almost as much as the beauty of their tiles, is that Fireclay Tile developed an easily navigable web site that actually lists the price of their tiles. Very few tile manufacturers do this in part because their prices vary depending on who is buying the tile (I hate that).

My Basil is without the black patine.

Another place to check is Complete Tile. The Vermeere line has a ton of greens! They weren't quite the shade I was looking for, but they were beautiful tiles.

My serious runner-up was the Modulatti tile in Leaf Peeper or Lily Pad. You can search my older threads to see samples -- the online colors are NOT at all what they looked like IRL!

    Isn't Fireclay only available online?

Sonoma runs close to $30 sq. ft. Both are California companies so you might as well save on shipping. Of course if you want to support us Oregonians, Pratt and Larson is in Portland and supplies tile for all the old Craftsman homes there. Encore is in Southern Oregon.

Fireclay is available in at least one of my local tile stores (north Bay Area). But last time I looked (3-4 years ago), it was about $23/sq.ft. Gorgeous colors.

No, they aren't an online company, although their website is very accessible to customers. Fireclay Tile has a showroom in San Francisco and you can buy overstock and/or seconds at their Aromas, CA factory as well (I think that's correct). I wish they were in my local tile store!

Pratt and Larson tile is pretty irl. We have beautiful Craftsman homes in NE Ohio as well, and one of my neighbors restored her bungalow with P&L tile. Her color choice was a little drab I think. Craftsman doesn't necessarily mean muddy browns and greens. The original tile she replaced, because so many tiles had been broken, was butter yellow.

I should give a shout-out to our local Ohio tile manufacturers like Seneca and Epro, but honestly, their products are really only obtainable through designers. It's tough to drool over tile you're never going to see and cannot price.

I understood that Fireclay has a showroom in San Francisco. I don't know whether other stores distribute them..I sure saw them online many times and loved them! I was a bit afraid of ordering via internet..

I did see Pratt and Larson and Encore and Motawi in real life stores around here, maybe I saw Fireclay too? We have a couple of stores with incredibly beautiful tile..very expensive which makes the choice so much easier lol. Encore was prohibitively expensive, at least what I wanted. (I wanted Jewel shaped mosaics lol) And extremely beautiful too...

I ordered a small box of Pratt and Larson mosaics, just for the border of the step in the entrance. A very small box. I payed half a thousand dollars for it.

We just started the remodel then, I didn't even realize what we were getting into..:)

But we do have this gorgeous border. The reminder of how silly I was..:)

I would love to recall the name of the small local company who makes deep-fired porcelain tiles..I couldn't afford them but gosh, weren't these tiles amazing. Incomparable quality.

Ann Sacks also has its own production in Oregon. But they distribute other companies as well..like Tabarka Studio which I'm in deep love with. But Tabarka specializes in terracotta, and patterns..

I need to say that both stores we ended up using, the one that we ordered Pratt and Larson with (they are called "Mission Tile West" and carry all these beauties), and the Ann Sacks one, were hands down the best shops I encountered..customer service, timelines, shipping, delivery..everything was impeccable.

    Which is kinda important too.

The shop in San Diego where we got our floor tile was quite good as well, but the traffic marred my experience a bit..:) We had to go there a few times, on weekends of course...

In short. Aimeekm. You'll choose just one or two tiles in the end. But you'll remember so much more))))) It's an experience...

On the P&L link, the Craftsman tile is described as matte and textural, and the photo of the tiled bath doesn't look like that tile would work with a shiny granite. But Kalapointer's photo shows a high gloss.

    Okay, that's the watercolor glaze.

You know, I like some P&L tile, but I don't love all the finishes. Watercolors irritates me in its lack of clarity. What color is that? But then, I'm not a huge Monet fan either. I prefer Heath Ceramics to P&L.

practigal, I look forward to more 3D involvement. The aforementioned Epro tile works scavenges things from nature to make their designs, so they use real feathers, etc... That's a little ridiculous in this day and age...

earn44 - I am very impressed w Fireclay. Not only is the tile beautiful, but their customer service has been great so far, cheap samples, fast shipping, and personal emails to ask about my project. I am adjusting my pricing expectations and thinking that $35/sq ft isn't so bad! Thanks everyone for talking me out of the shapes, that saves $10/sq ft!

Speaking of Fireclay, I'm back on board w Kelp potentially, I've been reading through many of the Craftsman kitchen threads on here and lunarlab's kitchen thread. The Kelp pic she posted on this thread is one of the many in her reveal thread, and shows the color quite differently. Hope you don't mind me posting this lunarlab, it is gorgeous!

pippiep - I read through your threads on tile, I feel like you've saved me so much work and samples! I like the Leaf Peeper tile, but the Basil is just so much more vibrant and appealing to me. Checked out the Vermeere at Complete Tile, but paying for shipping is stopping me from ordering samples. Does anyone else balk at these silly expenses, that are so small in the scheme of things!
