Fourth of July flowers

I had one ffo today, Wizard's Wish. This Moldovan daylily is registered as ML, yet it always blooms later than the two late blooming Moldovan's I have. Also the bloom has never been 5.5 inches as registered here. It's usually exactly 5 inches or in the upper end of the 4 inch range. This year the first bloom is just under 5 inches. It's a very nice one for the late season.

Spacecoast Francis Busby had her reddest flowers of the season today. The blooms usually look more orange-red than red. I guess this is the color the blooms should be with enough hydration. I toned the color down a bit. It looked neon today in the photos. I have been so pleased with this cultivar this season. The scapes were normal height - 28 inches. And one of the three rebloom scapes is 33 inches tall. And the fact there are many more blooms to come really makes me smile.

Ruby Lipstick - They just seem joyful today.

Venus's Fire

Biltmore Style - I think I finally got the wine color right on this one. It usually looks too true red in my photos.

Season Finale - Only one bud left so I doubt that this cultivar will be the season finale this year. Maybe in future years ... I have two very late bloomers that are just now putting up scapes.

Very interesting about SC Francis Busby getting redder as the season progresses. In a few pictures I took of my first blooms that I discarded the camera did give it more of an orange/red tone that in person just wasn't there.Cameras do a good job, but there is nothing like the human eye...... Your Season Finale looks like mine did last year. This year I've had one decent bloom, the rest were blotched and lacked the pizzazz color of yours. I need to get rid of some daylilies this fall and this isn't helping it's case....I love Shelby. Last year you had a sequence of bloom with her and Pink Magnolia (?) another UF and they were so lovely together. I look forward to seeing some of your UF blooms every year, and Shelby is one of them..........Maryl

Here, Apache War Dance is a sign of imminent end. Ruby Lipstick is not performing well this year; scapes are short.

Mantis - Sorry to hear your Ruby Lipstick is not doing well. I have two clumps of Ruby Lipstick now. The one in the backyard has scapes that are an average of 21 inches. The one in the red bed got waterered more, and the scapes there are an average of 25 inches. It is one of the better budded cultivars I have this season - 17-23 buds.

Maryl - I think the color change on SC Francis Busby is the result of the deep watering I did on Friday in anticipation of a trip I ended up cancelling. It usually doesn't get watered for nearly as long as it did then. Plus we had come off three days last week with days in the 70s/80s. Perhaps the color fades somewhat to orange when temps are in the high 90s for extended time periods.

I like Wizards Wish, like the bitone. I always enjoy seeing Shelby. I like UFs and this one is a favorite. I will have to think harder about adding it.

Lori - Thanks for your comments!

Sherry - Shelby is a nice one. It was slow to multiply at first, but it's really taken off in the past year.

Your Spacecoast Francis Busby picture and description has put this one on the "definitely going to get" list. It is now time for me to go with quality rather than quantity and several DLS are going to be removed in the fall and I want good plants as replacements. You really do have a lot of "hot" ones, those colors really stand out. Apache War Dance lives here and has last two blooms today. It's been a good one. Always love the pictures of Ruby Lipstick.

Avedon - Spacecoast Francis Busby is a doer and not just a pretty face. It ended up being the centerpiece of the red bed. Red Edition, which is supposed to be 40 inches tall, started out as my centerpiece but I kept adding daylilies in the other direction. And it turned out so well that Busby is in the heart of it all and still churning out the blooms.

Now this is a beautiful group. I will have a hard time choosing just one of these. I truly like Wizard's Wish it is such a pretty bloom. I also like Francis Busby. I will likely add that one eventually when my yard stretches. Ruby Lipstick is a gorgeous group as is Venus's Fire. And all the other reds. truly my kind of group.
