Are you looking for something with foliage to contrast with the Bloodgood? Any upright green leafed form would work. I might try something completely outside the box and go with Acer pseudoplatanus 'Esk Sunset' (often incorrectly labeled and sold as Eskimo Sunset). This never gets to be a very large tree - might not even get as large as the palmatum - but the variegated foliage would look stunning next to the dark red of the Bloodgood.

Hi gardengal, it's funny you mention Esk Sunset. I saw several at a nursery just last Sunday, but they looked pretty bad. The leaves looked badly sunburned and the variegation made them look diseased. I have seen pictures and I know this is most likely from being in containers during the hot summer, but even all that self talk (and a 50% sale) couldn't convince me to buy one. I guess I am tending towards something that is a little contrasting to the Bloodgood. Maybe a fresh green would work... how about Seiryu?

Yes, that could certainly work!! Nice bright grass green color and the dissected foliage would contrast nicely with the larger, blood red foliage of the Bloodgood.

Esk Sunset is a beautiful tree if you can find one!
