BM or SW Paint gurus: Need rec's for small half master bath

Hi, everyone, I have painters here today for the master BR. The walls will be BM Stonington Gray. I was on the fence with them painting our small bath, which is only a half bath. I mostly use this bath, and DH uses the hall bath. The bath was remodeled about 8-9 years ago because we had a leaky toilet, and the subfloor had to be replaced.

No plans to replace the fixtures right now.

I know grey is neutral color, but our contractor asked me if I really wanted the gray with the terracotta tile on the floor and backsplash, so I held off on going forward with the gray. So, do you have a color you can recommend? I've not really been thrilled with the pinkish taupe I have there now--I cannot even remember the color but it was a Valspar color. There is a window opposite the sink.

So, here's the room as it looks now:

Here is BM Stonington Gray:

Thanks!! I know you all here have great ideas. The room is also super tiny and I painted it before any of the fixtures were put in.

Well, hold that thought. I can't believe that this happened. The walls are not Stonington Gray, but Nantucket Fog. I thought I had 3 gallons of Stonington Gray but I actually had two gallons of the gray and one of Nantucket Fog. Our home office is Nantucket Fog so I must have had another gallon.

Well, guess which one wound up on the walls? It looks great, but not what I had planned.

So, now we will have to decide if they are going to change the color or not. I'll have DH look at it when he gets home. They cannot do it this week, and I start back to school meetings next week.

Hmm, interesting. I may need to get a sample of that.

Well, DH does like the Nantucket Fog, but we'll live with it for a few days. He was skeptical about the gray. Is it weird to have two rooms off the same hall the same color? But if we keep the Nantucket Fog, I really don't like looking at the current bathroom color behind it.

The BM website suggests wood grain brown and Roxbury caramel to compliment Nantaucket fog. The caramel looks similar to what you have now. Here are some mock ups. Let me know if you want me to add any other colors.

Actually, the right gray would work with the terracotta, but would make the color in it more prominent (which can be a very good thing if you want to make that color more prominent)

I don't see it working with your backsplash though, since it has several earthy colors going on, and it will be hard for gray to play well with all of these.

If you prefer to go lighter-you can pull the lightest color from your backsplash, and use it on the walls.

Another possibility that might be interesting, especially in a very small place where you don't spend too much time, and use artificial light a lot-is to go with the darkest color in your bathroom, like these squares in the tiles..to go deeper brown.

All the white will stand out more.

But it might make for an interesting space, I think. Especially if you add, say, white towels, and some sparkle-small art in a golden frame for example.

In this case, I'd tint the ceiling a bit too, with the wall color.

I like your fixtures, they'll do great in the darker space. There's richness to them, that darker spaces love.

Or, you can look for a taupe still, that has less red in it, and more gray. My favorite is Kangaroo from Benjamin Moore. Is'a sophisticated color that will look different every time I suspect..but it won't read pink. Well, a color behaves differently in every space. but it never read pink to me. It has a very calming, enveloping effect as well.

oops..)) roarah, your mock up is close to what I'm saying. Even though I had slightly different shades in mind

Thanks, rorah, and others. I tend to gravitate towards cool vs. warm colors here. Can you try a mock-up of the Stonington Gray since I have two gallons of it? Also, maybe the Powell Buff. Not sure about Kangaroo. ?? I would likely need to stop at BM and see what kind of samples they have of these colors.

DH does like the Nantucket Fog, and he said he was skeptical about the gray for a BR. So, in all likelihood, we are going to end up keeping it, so, yes, that means painting the bathroom. At least I don't have to hire painters to do it. I have had some issues with balance and vertigo over the past couple years, so I did not feel comfortable taking on a job where I'd need extended time on a ladder or step stool, but I'd be able to do that small space. I could send DH up on the ladder, but I'm the painter. He is a wonderful man, but he is not handy at all. I've done this entire interior on our house except for this BR. If I did it while he was home on a weekend, that would be OK for safety.

I'll probably need to sell the leftover Stonington Gray on Nextdoor. I also have 3 gallons of primer. They are about 2 years old but have never been opened, so I'm sure I can't return them.

What do you think of the suggestions in this article on coordinating with terracotta?

Oh, that would be my dream bath. I need to save that photo. We would need an addition to expand this bath. I am hopeful.

How about a large patterned map of the world wallpaper or some other cool large print mural for walls?

You could add a copper waste bin or a few copper accents, like a soap dish or trinket bowl and have the feel of it.... I just finished a master bath addition and am having major buyer's remorse right now, keep your lovely small bath I say.

    What a beautiful bathroom, roarah!

I'd be totally on board with gray vs terracotta floors(as someone who just recently tried it and liked it LOL..I have deeper terracotta tones though). But the backsplash is giving me doubts. About every cool tone used in the space, actually. Unless it's a very muted, grayish, warmer version of that cool tone-that might work. But then it's not that cool anymore))

Kangaroo is definitely not a cool color. Not too warm either. It's very neutral. I prefer neutrals with a very slight gray-green undertone to them. Sometimes a hint of purple.

Of course you should always try it first, like with every paint. You can love it, or you can hate it, or it will seem ok but blah, or it will look different in your light..the possibilities are endless))

PS gsciencechick, as someone who approximately imagines what are you talking about (balance, vertigo, etc)-stay away from that ladder. Small space, tiny space-doesn't matter..

Send your DH to do just the upper part, do the rest where you can reach. It will be fine. Your safety is much more important than that impeccable paint job.

PPS I started reading the article-yes, it's a good info. I for example went for contrast.

But I didn't have other elements in the space. I don't mean accents or furnishings, you have much more freedom with those; I mean materials that are there to stay, like tiles etc.

And then when I had to introduce another element, I found the one that had both colors in it. So it tied them together.

And then when I was told I need to put something else in the space I said "no"

Because the contrast between two major players is powerful enough to pull off a room. If you add 5 other shades and tiles, and all of them support just one contrasting element-you'll loose this feeling of contrast, and get a feeling of "too much is going on"

Stupid question for you..is there a possibility to get rid of the backsplash?

Then, you can use contrasting color, like grey, green, etc. . with much more ease and effect too.

Thanks, everyone. I could remove the BS, but, of, course, that will probably involve some repair to the drywall, which is a little more work than I had planned. I'll have to think about that.

Justterrilynn, I love the look of wallpaper in small baths, but the wall you see is the only wall. The whole room is about 4 x 6'. I'm also a bit concerned about my wallpaper skills.

I'll see if I can get some BM samples. I wish I had the contractor do the ceiling in there while he was here in the BR. I've had a busy week this week, ramping up for the school year.

There is no huge hurry. It's not like it's a public space. It's just mostly my space, which is important, too.

I really like SW Accessible Beige, it's my favorite color. It looks griege but light and airy.
