can I use regular door and hang it on hardware to be a barn door

I want a sliding barn door to cover entrance to hallway, my contractor wants to just use a regular door but hang it on sliding hardware. I don't think it will cover the whole opening? Shouldn't it be wider than a regular door?

You can buy different sized doors. How big is your opening?

Opening is 40". Regular doors in house are 36" (3'O) Installer says he'll put frame along sides - says he does it all the time and it overlaps opening 1" on each side. I'm just a little skeptical.

So he is narrowing the doorway from 40" to 36" just to fit a door? I wouldn't be happy with that. Can you post a pic of the space?

Slab doors / luan hollow core / 48 inches wide are commonly available, ask at any lumber yard.

    Get a 48" door slab.

Thanks all. He was so sure it was okay, I just told him do it last night. Photos from this morning are below. Seems like it will work.

    I'm so overwhelmed and

tired of making decisions I could throw up. No one mentioned that aspect of building from scratch!

I think it looks great! Can I ask what color your walls are?

Looks good. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it and you learn a lot!

wall paint color is a sore subject with me. the color on your computer does not represent the fact that it looks like a canary exploded inside my house. I hired a paint color specialist , got the 8 by 10 large size paint sample , wanted a soft gold. so out of the five choices the Specialist gave me I picked the lightest one which was Belvedere cream Sherwin-Williams in their new Cashmere Sheen.
it's about the color of McDonald's yellow which is fine as an accent but all the walls and ceilings pretty much glow in the dark.
I have discovered that picking paint is kind of like a marriage. if you don't get it right the first time , it gets very expensive.
So I have decided to live with it until I feel like it keeps me awake at night and then I'll try to make another decision and repaint. at least in my bedroom.
are you sorry you asked yet?

I hear that. I actually hired a designer to help me choose paints in my last home. She knows what she's doing. A good rule is choose what you want and then go way more muted than you think you should. Honestly, though, it was worth the money!

If it helps, I think the color is nice.

The color caught my eye because it looks similar to what I have chosen, SW compatible cream for my new home. Hopefully that won't look like an exploding canary :). Ithink new paint colors can be shocking and scary but as time goes on they usually grow on us. We shall see. Good luck with your projects!

nlundborg99 you are so funny!!! I think your door and wall color look great so far:) Refreshing to see someone use a color besides grey.

I am sick of grey kjoy. Every renovated flip house I see is covered in grey

Thanks for your comment about grey - I totally agree. I went to a Parade of Homes in Sept '17 and 6 of 8 homes had grey interiors. Not me.

As promised a year ago, here's the finished look of my canary house. Lots to look at, yellow less prominant. And my dog Fannie Mae is cute enough that no one sees the walls anyway. Lots of color here Thanks to Houzz, Overstock, and Sherwin Williams.

Is your sliding door a hollow core door? I have the same idea just not sure if it will work with a hollow core door

My door is solid. It hangs free from top so wobbles slightly when u open or close. Hollow core may be too light and bang wall,

How does the door move over the pictures? I think the wall color is lovely and the room is charming. No gray for me either.

Typically when we measure for barn doors we encourage width to be past the molding 1" on each side, however when you have gorgeous molding we understand that wanting to be shown as well.

To Pat above: Barn doors typically sit off the wall about 1/2" which should go past most light switches, pictures, etc :)
