What can you just NOT find? What items of furniture are "rare"?

Finding quality end tables at estate sales (my favorite venue to shop) is just a non-starter. It's one of those pieces of furniture that the family can almost always find room for, so it never makes it to the sale. I've yet to find any in a furniture store that I'm willing to pay the prices they want.

Then, when my youngest needed to transition from crib to a "big boy bed", the choices I saw when shopping were just terrible. Wobbly, crappy materials, bad design, etc. I eventually bought a solid bed from an antique reproduction manufacturer.

In your world, what furniture item are you looking for that you just.can't.find?

Maybe I haven't looked in the right places or had the patience to look harden enough, but I have been looking for a small bar cabinet that will fit diagonally in the corner or our DR. I don't want a car. Need something with at least 1 drawer and a bit of storage below. Wood or wood with a marble or granite top. Can't be too tall. Yeah, I am Picky.

Server/Buffet 36in wide 30in high 2 doors no legs, mahogany or dark cherry, traditional style .

Pine desk at least 60" wide and 24" deep.

outsideplaying, hunt for a smoking cabinet. Maybe it's called a tobacco cabinet or something like that.

Something I can use as a tall linen cabinet in my bathroom that is no more than 30" wide but more than 12" deep. Turns out China cabinets tend to start at 36"!

all the end tables around here end up in the hands of the turquoise painters

I couldn't find tall enough bookshelves either, but finally after 2 years found these 30" wide x 7 foot tall solid oak bookshelves on Craig's list 2 weeks ago. I would have liked taller, but it's better than the 5 & 6 foot tall ones I've been seeing.

Now....to paint or not to paint...hmmm

    Don't give up!

OutsidePlaying, you might want to consider hiring a local cabinet maker for your bar cabinet. I have spent a lot of time looking for a bar cabinet myself- the question became moot when we decided to move- but I know exactly what you mean.

Can find everything in the end of the day, just can't always pay for it))

Nice rocking chairs are harder to find. Nice patio sets. And yes, big nice shelves as well.

Big shelves-we custom ordered ours. Anything decent of this size would cost us twice as much in a good store. And maybe triple as much-in a great store. Custom can be very savvy solution sometimes.

PS FinallyHome, I found a desk like that on Craigslist. Well first it hardly fit in the car, we had to go twice(the legs don't come off). And then we had to bring it in the room before the door frames were in. It's huge. I think it's more that 60 length..

But yes, it's pine. Pine and black. Has a hutch(optional), drawers, whatnot.

Don't remember the provenance..maybe Pottery Barn, from years ago? The seller was very sentimental about it.

(Of course my desk when I was a teenager was as twice as big. I think. I still remember it fondly..))

Good chest of drawers and dressers they want to just sell whole bedroom sets I just need storage.

Dresser with drawers that hold more than one item!!

My parents' down sizing came to my rescue. They no longer needed the dressers that stood in their extra bedrooms..all the ones for sale today are barely half drawer size. Found the same thing when looking for bathroom vanities. Why is a decent drawer so difficult to find!!!

I've been searching for a king headboard for at least 10 years. I've finally decided I'll just have to buy new.

Raven, too bad you're in TX. My mom has a vintage 1950 bedroom set that includes a dresser and chest of drawers.

    Design, love the bookcases!

Oh...and I've been looking for just the right bench for my foyer (if you can call it that since it's just one big living/entry area).

I do like the pew look, but all I've seen is wrong color, wrong shape, wrong size or WAY overpriced for my budget.

I have this bench from my mom, but it doesn't go with anything and needs reupholstering.

Plenty of dressers where I live. It must be local..where what is harder to find. Interesting..

Thanks for the bar cabinet suggestions. Yes, I have thought about custom built so that might be what I need to investigate further.

Funny, I used to have some large bookcases similar to those. I think mine were a walnut finish, made by Lane and were very good quality. We sold them to the buyer of our home years ago.

Now this is my idea of a bar cabinet! I have it saved in pinterest and actually already have the armoire, just no room where I could use it. You could find a cabinet which isn't as ornate since it's really all about the 'guts'.

For a corner bar cabinet I'd look at a corner media cabinet and convert it.

Took ONE YEAR to find an ottoman in size i needed. Price was sweet so worth the wait. Took me almost a year to find a solid wood lingerie chest.

aputernut, not sure what your budget or style is, but I LOVE Room and Board's recliners (because they aren't those big marshmallowey things). They are very comfy, well made (In USA) and they will make in any of their fabrics including blue leather. They have this style and other styles of recliners, I think the Harper also comes in a high back version.

I've been looking for an oval pedestal dining table with leaves, but it can't be wider than 42". Oh and I don't want to spend $5000 for it either.

Don't give up! Make sure you keep the measurement handy either on a piece of paper in your wallet or in your phone so that you have them ready should you see something that looks like it might be the right thing. I would say it usually takes me 3 to 4 months of looking for something of a specific size before it appears.

Scale. So much of the new furniture is designed for large spaces. It's hard to find stuff that's smaller in scale to fit us and our home.

I've also been hunting for new DR chairs. I think I found them, but I can't find any place that has them in stock to try them, and if I buy one to try it, I can't return it. So I have to keep looking. Very frustrating.

Robo, re small linen cabinet for bathroom - I have a small country style "jelly cabinet" for storage in my bathroom. I am planning a BR remodel and it is just going to be too country looking for my new look, but I also will be on the lookout for something different. Mine is a country pine with cutesy little heart cutouts with chicken wire :). I have actually thought about painting it and have a woodworker change the hearts to perhaps a diamond shape...hoping it might look more cottage looking. It just fits so well.

Check in small "gift shop" type stores - that is where I see small, unique pieces.

Thanks patty cakes. I actually never thought of checking Pier 1. I don't think of them as a furniture store but rather an accessory store.

I can't find a buffet/server I like in the right size. It can't be over 58 inches wide. There are some out there the right size but not what I like. Also, whatever happened to oval tablecloths??

They have quite a bit of furniture. I purchased 4 chairs for my breakfast room 2 years ago and they have held up quite well in spite of my grandchildrens acrobatics. lol

Robo- for your linen cabinet needs try looking for 'chimney cupboard', they are narrow by design, and I have seen many that are 15 - 17" deep. You can always take the ferry from Halifax to Portland for the weekend and get one here!

There's a consignment furniture shop here called Still Goode, I was there yesterday and they had a fantastic bar cabinet. In perfect condition. I didn't find any chests or dressers but I found a bed I am in love with. If it's still there by the time we can move into the house it's mine. I would get it now but we have no place to put anything. I don't know if they ship? They do have a website.
