Design Help Needed: For Christopher Peacock Kitchen From Craigs List

In May I brought to Maryland (currently in storage) the CP kitchen I found on Craigs List. I stumbled on my dream kitchen by Googling Christopher Peacock Cabinetry to show a cabinet maker I was going to work with images of cabinetry I like. The original kitchen was way to large for my planned kitchen - it came with a butler's pantry & walnut hutch for a 9' tall grand home. However, my planned kitchen will have 9'. I am keeping the 16' wide sink group, the range cabinetry, and the double subzero cabinets. As for the amazing island (more of a continent) I am reconfiguring the cabinets and butcher block to make them work in my smaller space. The overall kitchen will be 23 1/2' long by 16' wide.

We are getting very close to permit drawings. I am designing this myself with the assistance of a design/build company. If anyone can look at this design I would be very grateful. What do you think of the space and surrounding walk space? I am very excited but terrified to make a wrong decision.

Thanks so much in advance!

The 1st image is the kitchen addition I am working on. The rest is the original kitchen.

Have you looked at any of the hardwax oils, like Osmo or Rubio Monocoat for your floors? When my husband was considering hardwood for the main floor, including kitchen, in our new house, these were my top contenders for finishing. There are some good, informative posts here on GardenWeb, and also at the napervillehardwood blog, where they tested a variety of finishes. Good luck!

I actually had to talk my husband out of hardwood floors because we live on a farm, and my preference is for vinyl plank flooring, much easier to maintain, and I wanted to put the savings toward a 48" Bluestar range : ) .

We looked at bluestar! They are made in Pennsylvania. My husband and son love it! I have only become aware of hardware oils - am looking into Osmo!

We're in the back of beyond in rural western Canada so we wanted a fairly basic range with as few parts and pieces to go wrong. I've been cooking for more than 20 years on a 1950s O'Keefe & Merritt gas range which I love and which has been a workhorse (closing in on 70 years old), but we could use a bigger oven and at least two more burners.

I'd been dreaming of an AGA since my late teens, but for a number of reasons it just isn't a practical choice for us. I'm looking forward to using the BlueStar, which is cobalt blue and beautiful : ) .

I actually love the Lacanche. It is very analog and it is my dream come true. I do love AGA but, it is on all the time and not well suited for the Washington, DC weather. They are amazing in the UK and colder environments. Look at Lacanche. I have never met anyone with regret. If my kitchen had not come with the 60" wolf I was going to get one. Please look at them....they are so easy to fix and will last for your great grand children.

Yes, the heat is one reason why an AGA wouldn't work for us. Our summers are already quite warm and getting hotter every year (and more humid too).

A 60" Wolf will be fabulous!

We looked at Capital Culinarian, Lacanche, La Cornue, and Bertazzoni too, but BlueStar works best for us. Form and function are important to me, but for our farm and our life, function and price were the deciding factors. Then again, as far as form goes, I found myself waffling at the end between cobalt and sapphire blue, which was a lovely problem to have! We've already taken delivery, and installation should be in a few weeks.

Not sure if others here know, but the Green Demolitions website from time to time has CPeacock kitchens, often from showroom displays. So it's worth keeping an eye out : ) .

You are absolutely correct! I have spoken to the owner of Green Demolitions and he is a very nice guy. His company works with high end kitchens like CP and Clive Christiansen as well as high end appliances. It is well worth it to look at their website and see what they have!

Becky - Please send pictures! It sounds lovely! I looked at all the ranges as well. this kitchen came with the 60" Wolf range. I very much look forward to using my kitchen finally!

I hope all would enjoy the walkways and patios we finished yesterday. I am so thrilled as my husband will be able to use his Big Green Egg on his new grilling patio! I don't own very much patio furniture but I am excited to begin shopping!

What a great space! It turned out beautifully. Is that slate on the patio floor?

Blue stone from Pennsylvania and matching brick to our home. Thanks for asking! I am thrilled.

The work looks wonderful. And what a beautiful house. You must be thrilled, almandds!

I don't know what price point or style you're looking for for patio furniture, but we've been quite pleased with a set we found at Costco (Canada, online, we're not members) several years ago. It had lots of good reviews, looks very nice, priced right, possibility of easy returns if you're not happy with purchase, etc. Best of all, the cushions are all Sunbrella fabric and removable for washing. If I'm remembering properly, I read about Costco's patio furniture here at GardenWeb in the first place, from someone who had bought some and was happy with the purchase.

Hi Becky! We are members of Costco! Actually, our path lights which are not installed yet are from Costco! I love to research everything and I independently explored well made (solid copper or brass) low voltage lighting and amazingly enough Costco sold them! And at a fantastic price! I called the owner and they even made a special combination for me to suite my needs. I have not installed them but come spring they will be in! Look up PM Lighting! They are fantastic for a tradition look. I am so looking forward to decorating the outside and using the spaces! Lily of the valley is my favorite flower and it grows well in my yard...I can't wait!

Lily of the valley is one of my favorites as well, and best of all it's tough, grows just about anywhere, and spreads easily (which for some gardeners isn't good, but it is for me lol).

I agree. It grows well here but only where it is happy.

Dear Barncatz, We lucked out that the stone yard gave us the best stone for 1/3 of the usual price and we also reused stone from our former patio in the front. Thanks for your support through this project!

Hello All - I have lots of pictures for the update! We are currently almost there. We have been painting and working on trim. The kitchen cabinets have been painted in Fine Paints of Europe using our local "certified" painter Eric Linkins.

Do we get to see any of those pictures?!

OUR KITCHEN: We are getting closer and closer to final inspection. We have tentatively picked a paint color for the walls of the kitchen - Farrow & Ball Skylight. It goes really well with the marble and the soft whisper of grey in a color we made up in Fine Paints of Europe (it is a bit darker than the British Standard White - we just added a few pumps more of the pigment). The ceiling is the British Standard White.

I have begun to clean out the cabinets and bring our huge number of oils and vinegars and other kitchen items such as china and crystal home from my mother's house where we stored it for 2 years. We have temporarily deferred the Butler's Pantry to just get the final inspection DONE. This will provide more pantry space and certainly more space for my glasses. I just need to get the all important inspection done.

The 2 over island lights still need installation as well some cabinet pulls and the small appliances need a final tweak to set them. etc. The cabinets themselves need some adjusting but, Christopher Peacock uses the high quality BlueMotion by Blum slides so this should not pose a big problem.

OUTSIDE: The water problem in the backyard with water coming from several yards and epic storms creating lots of runoff seems to be solved. We have planted lots of things from dividing our own plants - liriope, hydrangea, hosta, lily-of-the-valley, ivy, astilbe, and more to new beds to planting sod and grass seed. This is all just to get the ground established. The grass is growing and I will begin to buy trees and bushes soon to create a multilayered yard and get back shade we lost when the large hickory and oak were removed due to them being exactly where we needed to create a swale to direct water away from the house and create a planned rain garden to collect and absorb rain runoff. For fun and joy, I have a wonderful set of window box plantings outside my kitchen window ready for when the painter finishes the window box (Fine Paints of Europe oil in Wooden Shoes) and we have a professionally made liner (water proof) from a pond company to assure no rotting of the window box as it was installed permanently to the existing house - don't worry we have a drainage in the window box with holes at every 6".

    Good morning!

Marble Counter Tops: The countertops are made with a Dupont Edge! I really like it. They are honed so there is not a high gloss polish. They are "sealed". All sealed marble means that you have enough time to grab a paper towel and wipe up any potential stain from an acid or staining product. You basically buy a liquid sealer and use it every few weeks after washing with a gentle soap and rinse. The marble is Calacatta (I was told the Calacatta Gold but there aren't any gold veins seen so I actually thinking it is Calacatta) and was hand picked by the Christopher Peacock designer before it was available to the US market. We took the original kitchen's 123" x 60" island and cut it to a 36" or so island and used the rest to make our kitchen work. In the end we cut a middle of the kitchen double sink piece since the original kitchen and when installed in our home needed an additional inch or so due to fillers and making it work in our own space. Sadly, the well known marble company incorrectly cut our marble when "cleaning it up" and we lost lots of precious marble we had planned to use in the Butler's Pantry, our Master Bathroom Vanity, and the Kitchenette in the Den/Master Bedroom. It has been very difficult road but in the end the marble island, the fantastic backsplash, and the other spaces turned out nicely.

Floors: Our entire 1st floor was done in new red oak. I wanted a walnut or other wood but the main stair is red oak and the cost to match or make it work was to great. We stained it with Duraseal (the professional level of Minwax) Provincial and the finish is Lenmar Polyurethane Dull Rubbed Oil-Based Wood Floor Finish. I really wanted a darker finish but my husband insisted on this. I can see the red tones peaking through throughout however, overall it is very nice. I had wanted a more dark and walnut like finish such as medium brown. I was strongly advised to not mix colors as it is difficult to match for future repairs. The floor company Weyer Floors specializes in university and high school Basketball courts and do all the gym floors in the tristate area so they have Georgetown University, the Naval Academy, & University of Maryland and all swear by Larry's advise. I really wanted a tung oil finish but, that would have taken weeks to dry and the entire project would wait for each coat to properly dry. This would have basically added one more month to our project and all the staff would have nothing to do, which was entirely unfair as my project is their only one. So I caved and went with the Dull Rub finish. Cleaning will be very easy - just a capful of white vinegar into a bucket of water! Say goodbye to costly chemicals!

Faucets: I love love love Perrin & Rowe faucets, actually many English faucets - I had one for 24 years in my kitchen. I was quite upset when the kitchen came with 3 bridge faucets that looked very lovely but were not Perrin & Rowe (distrubuted as Rohl in the USA). That being said the faucets are the Town & Country Michael Smith bridge faucets in polished nickel.

They are wonderful and I have been enjoying using them already. The picture below is one of the faucets in the original Butler's Pantry.

I will post pictures again soon. All is looking fantastic!

@almandds I just love watching someone go through the process after I did myself '17-'18 and I actually just paid contractor in full yesterday. Whew....what a process and so many decisions that I'm sure that you are right in the middle of. And, yes, we had an issue with our original stone fabricator and I ended up having to having the original torn out and go through re-selection process (nightmare). Love all of your choices as we have similar tastes (F&B colors, etc). I, also, used the same Dupont edge on our Imperial Danby honed marble. Wish I had known about the dull rubbed oil-based wood floor finish. No doubt with a 1-yo lab puppy we will have to do the floors over sooner rather than later. Good luck!

Where are you located? I am interested in Danby marble as well for the rest of the project and perhaps soapstone. I don't like to visit stone yards at all. They are far away and it is so tedious. Please send pictures of your project!

I am in the process of doing a remodel. Woodworking is my hobby and I have a complete shop. I want my kitchen to be like the peacock refractory. I saw on this thread that some hardware can e purchased through Armac Martin. I did not see the drawer pulls I am seeking on their website.

I am hoping to find something exactly like these pulls used in the refractory kitchen. I have seen an older post mentioning the Restoration Hardware Aubrey is close (I disagree) and Hickory Hardware and Cliffside and Project Ready Cabinet Hardware were mentioned, but none had this style. Very nice how they are attach at 4 points, with 2 on each side rather than 1 on each side which is very stable, and the way the middle section widens and flattens is nice. I think the pulls are so nice, the drawer fronts can be a rectangle with no profile and the face frame can also be plain, and yet with these pulls and the marble counter top, it looks stunning. Any idea where I can get these? I did email Armac Martin to inquire. I figure someone makes them! On the paint, I did buy some from CP years ago only to find that Peacock then stopped selling them. I then found out that in white, Fine Paints of Europe made the exact same white 001. I am hoping to find the same with the drawer pulls.

Very nice project on the Craigslist find!!!!

CP does not sell anything anymore to non-clients.

Paint: I am very friendly with Everett, who works at FPOE. CP sells their own paint but only to clients. They could sell to the public but, they have chosen not to. FPOE does all for CP so basically it is CP's chosen colors put into a custom can by FPOE. I am a big fan of FPOE! I have been using it for years on my home so I was relieved that this is what CP uses. As for the cabinet painting I splurged and used our FPOE master painter Eric Linkins who I adore. They hand paint all and it was meticulously done. For color I chose a nice soft grey for my cabinets using the British Standard White in Oil for the room's crown, base boards, and ceiling. We made up our own white/grey taking the formula for the White and making it darker - it came out fantastic! For the walls I used Farrow & Ball Skylight and I could not be more pleased.

Armac Martin: My son went to University of Edinburgh and I have family in the UK. Since we have a UK address the company is willing to ship to me in the USA. I have not done this since the kitchen came with all the hardware. It is very expensive and even with trade discount I added up my hardware and it came to over $12K for the knobs, pulls, hinges, and handles. I adore and love all the hardware - it is solid and feels like as someone once said "like brass knuckles". You can buy Armac Martin here in the USA on line. There is a store here in Maryland called Push Pull and they carry Armac Martin. CP claims that they make their hardware in Brimingham England. However, they are specifiying and Armac Martin is making the hardware for them. Aarmc Martin does even engrave the CP name on some items - they can engrave just about anything. I really like this company. My own hardware is the Bakes Collection for the pulls and the knobs are the 3169 knobs with a circle/donut instead of the square base. British brass is the best made. For finish the polished nickel is the most popular and all other finishes require a wait time of 2 weeks if I remember correctly.

My Project: We are about 2 weeks from our final inspection. We still need to complete our small butler's pantry, our master bathroom, and kitchenette in the "Den" all using more left over CP cabinets but we really need to get back into our house and live again. Each day we move a bit more forward. The wonderful light fixtures I got from the same sale have been very helpful. However, we still need to select more fixtures to complete the renovation as well as colors for rooms and wallpaper. There will be a lot to decorate and I have not begun the shopping process for furniture. I can't wait to cook in the kitchen! Finally! It has been way too long of a journey!

I wish you the best and if you have any questions please call me at 301.717.9501.

I will! Really nice progress on the kitchen. I used the CP paint I purchased when CP still sold paint (and stored in my shop for years) on a wedding gift (makeup vanity) I completed this past year.

The cabinets and drawers were maple. The drawer fronts and top were figured maple, and the hand turned knobs were brazilian rosewood in the Maloof style.

For the kitchen drawers, my thought was 1 1/8 thick drawer fronts and face frames (painted white) in maple (I think that is the thickness of CP although I have also seen 1 inch), For the drawers, I was thinking 5/8 sides, front, and back with 3/8 baltic birch bottoms. I wanted the front of the box to be walnut and for the sides and back was thinking maple or quarter sawn white oak. I think having the walnut on the front part makes the dovetails stand out. I always used to think maple but am now more seriously considering white oak for the drawer sides and back.

I am in the LA area and have read there is someone in LA very familiar with CP designs down to the mm. Perhaps that is "JDesigns_GW" but not yet sure who that is.

I saw on the original plans the microwave was a drawer within the island. Not sure what is currently considered the best option or microwave brand. I never used a drawer microwave, and wonder if my coffee would spill when I open-close the drawer.

    Nice wood panel ceiling.

As I look at the photos of the beautiful kitchen, a couple of thoughts come to mind. There is plenty of recessed lighting, and so it would seem that the light fixtures over the center island would be more for looks than actual lighting. I noted that in some CP kitchens, although actually the minority, there are attractive pot-pan hooks. Those offer the advantage of overhead storage, decreasing the need for cabinet space or reducing storage clutter, so was wondering what people (not just almandds) thought of lights fixtures vs pot-pan display/storage over the island.

On the microwave, you do not often see attention drawn to microwaves on CP kitchens. Everyone favor the under counter microwave drawers?

On expresso machines, which was mentioned in this thread, interesting I do not see many pictures on the internet displaying machines in CP kitchens, which can be something like La Marzocco or Synesso (220v plumbed). It seems like with nice machines, this could be a focal point rather than something hidden.

On trash, best to have a separate trash bin drawer for trash and a 2nd one for recycling?

I never see a clock in a CP kitchen!

On one photo of a CP kitchen (not on this thread), I saw a hook next to the sink to hold a towel. Seems like a nice idea!

On my current Wolf range/oven that is one size down from 60 inches, I have the Wold stainless shelf and above that the hood that has warming lights. Not having the shelf has a clean look, but I would think perhaps that is a tradeoff of appearance vs practicality.

    Great kitchen!!!!!
