Bamboo shade question? And bathroom shade question?

I'm looking to replace my plastic mini blinds with bamboo roman shades. Currently I keep my blinds down but turn them open for additional light, however, when closed they still allow light in. Is this the same with bamboo shades, do they allow the light in? Or block it unless you pull them up? Also what do you have in your bathroom on your windows? Would bamboo give the privacy needed? Thanks for any help. I'm a new home owner so I'm just learning.

I have a bamboo shade in a powder room, and at night with the lights on, someone out back could see very well into the room.

I have this type in my 5 office windows and couldn't be more pleased with them, but they aren't Roman shade style. No see through at night, too.

My3dogs The roller shade in your office, does it allow light in when down? Would you use these in your bathroom? They are very pretty!

It really depends on the shade. You have to hold them up to the light. Some are very see-thru, others not so much. The lined ones aren't at all. But they won't let the light in when they're down. If you want privacy, you might consider a bottoms up shade so you can let light in from above and privacy from the bottom.

Or you can do a cafe type curtain be it a sheer or lace or something else that will block the lower half of the window.

If it's a double hung, you can also look into window film that lets light in but obscures the image for privacy.

We have bamboo shades in our MBR that are woven tightly enough that we didn't need any sort of liner. The company I ordered from offers two levels of liners. One lets more light through, and I think the other us closer to blackout.

Plain bamboo shades might as well not be there at night when the light is on. Folks can't see in during the day when they are closed, but at night when they are back lit, practically see-through. I know this from personal experience. I tried bamboo shades in my living room that faced the street, and checked out the level of see through from the street at night. Not private at all. These were unlined ones.

We have bamboo shades. No one is behind us to really see in.

I have bamboo Roman shades in my master bathroom, but the window is textured, and so it is already private, except when it is open. It has a nice view of citrus trees and bromeliads in the back yard, but I seldom open it. I close the shades at night so that I do not have to look at the window glass but open them during the day to let light in.

That's a great idea! I can add window film to the bathroom Windows for privacy and still get the bamboo shade for the look I want!!!

I have woven wood blinds, with white blackout lining. No one can see through them when they are down. In our bathroom I have custom white shutters. Love both of them.

You could do an up down treatment in bamboo. We leave ours open at the top. I like the natural light in the day. With this kind you can draw up the bottom or the top or however you want. I ordered mine from HD and there were lots of choices on fabrics, bamboo or a texture looking grass cloth.

We bought inexpensive bamboo and lined them ourselves. Directions from a blog - I can't remember which one. They keep the sun out during day and privacy at night. Just a glue gun and cutting/restringing the cords. I should say that I am not at all crafty and my husband and I did it easily. They are in our kitchen and bathroom.

Bamboo shades will attract mildew in damp, warm places. Probably not best for a bathroom.
